Not a puzzle, DRM multiplayer, No sticks

As another reviewer said, whoever made this game seems to not have an understanding of what made the arcade game Gauntlet a great game. In my opinion, it was these things: 1. The original Gauntlet was essentially a maze puzzle game. Each level had some clever about it, and good players could go through each level taking advantage of that cleverness. This game has none or very little of that. 2. The original Gauntlet was side-by-side multiplayer, with up to 4 people standing shoulder to shoulder on the same screen. This game does not support arcade sticks (or "just keyboard" mode), and is not tailored towards multiple players on the same screen. 3. The other multiplayer modes, LAN and Internet, by all accounts use online DRM. LAN multiplayer should not require connecting to a central server. One of the disadvantages of DRM is that if a server goes down or a company goes out of business, the game becomes unplayable. This game has that disadvantage of DRM, and from the perspective should either be patched or removed from GOG. So on those notes, this is not really a Gauntlet game in spirit, though visually it looks kinda like one. For me personally it was a waste of the purchase price, because I can't play it on my arcade cabinet, so for that use case I'll stick with the original game.

Not DRM-Free 😡

All multiplayer modes require GOG Galaxy DRM. Makes me so mad they advertise this as DRM-free, you cant even LAN without it. This is a scam and GOG should either remove the game from their site or patch it so people can AT LEAST play LAN without DRM. I'm very disappointed that they're doing this more and more with games.

Major drawback.

NO LAN support. This game only supports off-line play as solo, offline play with friends on a couch with controllers, and then online with 1 copy purchased for each GOG.com account. DO NOT get this if you're hoping to have a LAN party. ima try to return this i think, as with the lack of LAN support and the per account restrictions, i feel that this spits in the face of what GOG.com is suppose to be about. I might not though, but I still don't like it. might get it on steam instead.

Disappointment in every way possible

As an oldschool Gauntlet fan I cannot understand how the devs could fumble this game this bad. First of all, they removed one of the original four character from the game and replaced the character with a totally new character concept with different looks, different weapon and playability, while all the other three remained essentially faithful to their original concepts. Secondly, they practically removed friendly and easy multiplayer game completely: you cannot play with your friend on the same computer, nor you can link two computers together over LAN/WLAN. Thirdly, they messed up the visuals. The levels are dark. Very, very dark with dim light sources to the point it affects gameplay. Another gameplay affecting matter is screen shake, of what this game uses plentifully -depending which character you choose to use- to the point it gives the player head-ache. Level design is just boring. With no visuals (but darkness and shaky cam) and no real puzzles to solve you just plough through enemies and reach the exit. Rinse and repeat. As a Gauntlet fan I really wanted to like this game. Sadly, I can't. Every previous Gauntlet game has been fun to play, solo or with friend. But this game is not fun.

Nice simple hack 'n slasher

It's my first time to have played this, so my review is a newbie impression. First, I like the graphics, music and SFX. Nice upgraded graphics that have a realistic/cartoonish look. Good SFX and great music! I think the music is what impressed me the most when compared to the arcade original. All of the classes play like they should (no throwing unlimited axes for you warrior, close combat only). Gold, potion and food are still here(and you can shoot the food, too). The inclusion of the Grim Reaper in the middle of battle makes things tense and there are a good variety of enemies for this type of game. There are some new moves for each character, but no mindless button smashing either, you'll need to plan your attacks. Even though this is an arcade-type game, it would have been great to have seen some armor and weapons as part of the loot. My only complaint are the attack controls. When you commit to an attack animation, it's hard to redirect your attack. Therefore, sometimes you will slash in open space instead of the enemies, so you have to time your attacks well. Overall, it's a really fun out-of-the-box hack-'n-slash game that you and your friends can just pick-up and play.
