Great single player experience

I recently played for the first time this game, completed the offline campaign as a Valkyrie and had a great fun doing so. Here is the playlist of the stream, stream was done on Twitch, playlist is on Youtube. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtpqh8ebqvxd58U2BPKvdplEGMuP4dyUa I was NEVER a fan of the old Gauntlet games. I found them just a sucker's game to feed more coins to it and even the home ports I found lacking in the fun factor. Mind you I am referring exclusively to single player experience. I read reviews of this game and found the reviews so off putting that I avoided buying and playing this game for years. Only a couple of weeks I made the jump and decided to play the game for my twitch channel and get something out of the money I paid for it. For me it is 100% worth the money. Even more so of course if you buy it on sale. It's a Diablo light game so if you like dungeon crawling in a Diablo themed game, this is for you. There are multiplayer options but I never touched them as I don't care for that. There are three I believe ways of playing the game single player, I played it with the campaign/story mode. Basically you play single levels, with some branching for extra side levels, during which you destroy your enemies and collect treasure. Treasure which can be used to buy different weapons and "spells" which are not better one than the other, just different way of playing. The extra armor, helmet, cape are just cosmetic. If you want to keep buying more powerful weapons, this is not for you. I tried all different weapon/spell combinations for my character, I liked one in particular for most, but still ended up defeating the final boss with the original weapon you start the game. Take it as you wish. I liked it. I played with mouse & kb control and while it took a while to get used to it, by the end I was fine. There is gamepad control too, but didn't try it. Each lvl can take from 3 to 15min not including restarts. Great game.

Okay alone, great with friends

This re-imagining of the classic gauntlet is different than the N64 and Gamecube titles, but it still stands well on its own. A great arcade stile romp, Gauntlet: Slayer Edition is simple in its mechanics but it works hard to explore them and give multiple build options for each class. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because the levels get more complex and difficult, but you stop being able to upgrade you core abilities fairly early on. I like the challenge, but more room for upgrades would have been nice in my opinion.

Like it BUT...

Game is good, I like the everyone but the Barbarian. Necromancer is DLC, but worth it. Pros: - Nice mindless kill-everything-don't-die in endless mode, campaign isn't boring (while it lasts) - Good characters, fun co-op (unless you accidentally destroy the food, can turn into a real hate-fest fast!) - Strongly hated Diablo 3's always-online single player PC requirement, stupid BS. This kind of scratches my itch but YMMV. - Good for those who like action RPG combat, but eyes glaze over on the stories. Cons: - Really don't like relying on Galaxy. Better if you could just feed it an IP address and play with your siblings without all this crap. One star docked for this, I agree with others and DO NOT LIKE THIS TREND (4 otherwise). - Devs got lazy or cheap on levels. Campaign is good, but expect to blaze through ALL levels in like 10-15 hours after you learn how to survive. Random levels and replayability are why I bought this, but they didn't make nearly enough pre-made rooms to stitch together in early Endless mode. That's the key to getting roguelikes right, to COMBINE handmade areas with randomly putting them together and monster/item layout! Fail here, plus you always start fighting the zombie zone, then skeleton, then orcs/goblins, then tree things(?), then cultists, then demons. You have to fight through about 15 levels EVERY SINGLE TIME before the levels, gameplay, and enemy count become interesting. About 30 enemies on screen seems to be right, in about 3 waves. Beforehand you get 8-20 in the zombie levels, single wave per level, then stragglers here and there. Gets old real fast. - I don't like games that use controllers in general, but this game sure feels like it was made for one. Definitely has the twin-stick arena shooter vibe stronger than any other game I've played. 8 directions just won't do it most of the time. - Grim Reaper. Absolutely sucks the fun out of EVERYTHING. Stop spawning UNDER me when I'm swarmed and immobile, WTF?!

4/5 Game 1/5 DRM

I am aware of the reviewing rules and it is a good game, but I cannot recommend the GOG version of it due to the developer approach to impose DRM on the self-proclaimed DRM-Free Platform. While LAN is removed there should at least be local multiplayer if you have multiple controllers, so keep that in mind.

As fun as the original Gaunlet

A fun hack'n'slash game. If you liked the originial Gauntlet, you will like this one. The gameplay is not mindblowing but it's definately fun, especially with two or more players. Keep in mind that you are always connected to a server, even if it's local. Local networking problems can make it seem like you can't play, which was the source of my older poor review.
