Really fun game but NOT DRM-free

You need Galaxy to play and even local multiplayer the game wants to connect to the internet phone home. With that out of the way, the game itself is really fun. If you played other Gauntlet games then you know what you're getting into. It was easy for me to link up with my friend online to play and I also played locally (same screen, one computer) with me using my keyboard and my girlfriend using a controller. The player models are a bit lacking and the abilities could use more explanation as for what they do (damage etc.) All the character customization should be free instead of a la carte with in-game gold so you can make your character unique and to your liking. Further character customization would be nice so you can make yourself a fire or ice mage for example at the start. The music is fantastic as well. Love the classic Gauntlet tune. I'd recommend it even with the problem mentioned earlier, especially for the sale price.

Not perfect but great fun!

I don't see why this game is taking so much flak. But I am playing Slayer Ed, and it ticks a lot of boxes right. Mind you, it is not 'Gauntlet Remastered', so forget about a face-lift of the old classic. It is a new game and a fun tribute to it. The good Graphics and sound are top level, very detailed, excellent animations and effects. Really eye candy. The campaign's story is light but funny, and the characters fit in it very well. The other modes may best enjoyed in multiplayer, but even as solo experiences are not bad at all. Controls are very responsive. I am using an Xbox controller, and I manage all the buttons. I reckon the keyboard might be harder, but I have not tried. Many types of enemies and traps offer good challenge. The best point, which I think is missed in many other reviews, is that the money earned in the game are not spent to 'improve' the characters, but rather to unlock new equipment. This new equipment is not necessarly better than the old one - it simply changes gameplay, making it possible to replay the content with different strategies! If you go multiplayer, you can imagine how many combinations you can enjoy. Speaking of which, there is local multi with up to 3 friends on the same PC. Maybe, as PC is not a console, we forget about this possibility? The so and so Puzzles are extremely simple and very linear. It is hard to miss secrets (and there are not many) or keys to open doors to treasures. Traps could have been many more. There is some difficulty balancement issue. E.g. the dark wizards can make you explode from far away and without line of sight. The first boss is great, but the second is very cheap, while the final one is sometimes plainly unfair. Overall Gauntlet is a very good game, well inspired by the original. Mechanics wise, I can see lessons learned from various games (e.g. Dawn of War Last Stand, even Dark Souls). In general, it seems to me that it lacked resources to expand content, but what is there works pretty well.

HECK YES!

Own it on Steam and I definitely endorse this game. While it's nice that it has online multiplayer, I feel this game's strength is in it's local multiplayer like the other games in the Gauntlet series. The random dungeon generation feature is actually pretty nice and extends this game's replayability for pick-up games.

Looks nice but is grindy and unbalanced

At first look I was pleasantly surprised by this reincarnation of Gauntlet. It looks nice, plays smooth, has a good sense of humor and several elements of the original game are still there. There is an endless dungeon mode and a campaign. The latter consists of 31 levels where some of them are side quests in a way and three are boss levels. Some levels are large, some are more like challenge rooms. There are different themes like cave or dungeon, all of them look nice. You'll be locked now and then in rooms with generators or mini bosses and can only leave if you killed all monsters. There are a few levels with keys and a very few with switches but nothing mind boggling. Some walls can be destroyed with explosives, usually to find gold and potions. There's a story and a few short cutscenes, but all of it quite forgettable. With the gold collected you can enhance your equipment (main weapon, talisman, relic and clothing). Weapon, relic and talisman decide your special attacks, clothing is just visual. Which brings me to my main gripe: you can buy some equipment, but it's expensive and somewhat pointless as there is no character progression. I started with the warrior class but got stuck at the first boss. I played the same levels again and again to buy some new equipment but it didn't change anything. I continued with the Elf, grinded to buy the most expensive bow but found that it's much worse than the default. Got to the final boss eventually but got stuck again and was only able to beat it on "easy". So the grinding is somewhat pointless and the game becomes ultimately frustrating since the equipment you can buy is mainly different, but not really better. However, let's be honest: while I was somewhat fascinated by the original Gauntlet and it probably was a (multiplayer) milestone in its time, it was also somewhat dull and unfair. So yeah, its reincarnation is fun for some hours, but it's not more than that due to balancing problems and pointless grinding.

Slayer Edition VASTLY IMPROVED!

Those looking for a bit of good old Arcade Action - WALK AWAY! This is NOT the Gauntlet of your youth!!! I knew this when I first purchased thsi game on Steam... And I was prepared for that... Graphically the game looks stunning, but my first play was full of issues... The game was FAR TOO DARK, Lagged to buggery despite having a laptop that more than met teh minimum specs... And teh game was just WAY TOO DAMN HARD!!! There was only one way to play and that was Online Multiplayer... END OF!!! Basically, Warner Bros / Arrowhead were REALLY PUSHING the Online Multiplayer aspect... I heard about teh update - But having already had a refund from Steam - I was not about to jump into buying again until I had tried the game to see if it had improved... I do NOT condone Piracy at any time - But as I could not find a demo anywhere... I am sad to say a Torrent was the only way to go! And... WOW! What a difference! An Actual STORY! Graphics are BRIGHTER! Controls more fluid... Everything is BETTER BY A MILE!!! (This was literally try before I buy by the way... Trust me they have a WONDERFUL bit of DRM to make sure you don't pirate - I know what it is but I am not going to reveal!!! I will only say you can play ONE LEVEL and thats it!!! Great Job Arrowhead!!! Loved it! Great bit of Trolling!) The Bad Points... Its obvious really - Online is the best way to play... WHICH SUCKS! I am not sure if there is a Local Option as I have no one to test it with - but i SURELY HOPE SO! Very Happy with the updated version and WILL BE REPURCHASING - Great Job Arrowhead - You listened and altered the game! You bought me back into the fold... To keep that going though - Seriously.... CONSIDER DEMOS!!! Should not need to pirate to get a taste of what you have to offer!
