Cute little metroid

The game is shortish, and befitting its retro aesthetic, not too complex. You won't be doubling back endlessly in this one. It has a little variety in leveldesign with you alternately being in a robot-suit, submarine or just zooming around in cat form. Due to the visual style this isn't really reflected in the graphics though. The monochromatic pixel graphics worked for me, but I can imagine the style could wear on someone used to more visually stimulating games. The game is not too difficult. As you level up most enemies become relatively easy to beat and there are copious save points. The bosses can be figured out after a couple go's at them. The lineair nature of the game means it has limited replayability, and aside from one or two hard to find upgrades all items can be found by just following the map. All-in-all a fun little game which at its price, often discounted, is a real steal.

Fun, Simple and Funny

Would be nice to have a new game+, so I could collect rest of the collectibles on the same save. The game does warn you at the end, that there is no turning back after that point. The game also auto-saves afterwards, so there really is no turning back, but there isn't really much of a reason for this. Gameplay/Control is satisfyingly smooth, visual style looks nice and there is absurd humor. Not too difficult, relatively easy.

Great but short

This game is a Metroid parody starring a cat in a suit, exploring a weird space bio-research facility after its ship crashed. Graphically it looks like an old-school (Game Boy/Spectrum/Commodore/Amstrad) game, with with modern smooth animation and controls. It's simple and monochromatic (black/white) but you can unlock color schemes (15 total) that give it a Spectrum/GB look, and many others. Monsters can be either cute or creepy, but the general visuals are really pleasant. The music is fairly old-school with XM/MOD sensibilities and fits the game like a glove. While exploring, you must fight the various enemies, find save points, new gear for your mech-suit that unlocks new paths and access to secrets. You can exit your suit to crawl vents (and climb walls), swim, or even pilot a mini-attack sub. Exploring will also let you "read" logs which shed light on the overall plot of the game. The boss fights are well-designed and will require use of all your arsenal and skills, and they're a genuinely great experience that helps maintain the dynamic pacing of the game. Controls are mostly great, although sometimes it's a little slippery and aiming a jump can be a little tricky. because there is a lot of lateral acceleration, which makes some points a little frustrating, but never unfair or really hard. A controller is recommended for a comfortable experience, but keyboard is playable. Be warned though, on Easy, if you're a "platform exploration" veteran (I hate the term Metroidvania), you can beat the game under 3 hours with almost 100%, and when fully upgraded the final boss is almost too easy. Also, like Metroid Fusion, the progression is essentially linear, with little reason to backtrack (except for secrets). The short duration is the reason I only give it 4 stars, but on the other hand, it's a perfect introduction to the genre and a fun snack for people used to this type of game. Give it a chance, I bet you'll like it. I know I did.

Worth It

For the price point the length is just right. A very enjoyable homage to metroid (the beginning even apes Super Metroid) and the old school charm and humour does not outstay it's welcome.

A Good Game with Issues

Cute and straight forward game, I think there are some cool and thoughtful game design choices and the devs obviously know what they're doing. However there are some weird and glaring flaws that make me tick this down two stars. TELEMETRY: This game has a bunch of weird telemetry. Some stuff like the game querying 'ping.yoyogames.com' is understandable. Other things like the game querying port ::1:631 (its querying printers on your local network???) is just weird and a no-no. There's some other telemetry as well. None of it makes sense and I have no idea why the game is trying to query those destinations. I first found this out because I run this game through wine and have the 'winint' dll disabled on my runner. The game will NOT run without this. I have not had this issue on any other game I've purchased from GoG so far. BAD KEYBOARD CONTROLS: This doesn't really come up until you fight the first actually hard boss in the game and unlock the dash ability. Whoever made the controls for this game is either newer to PC gaming or plays primarily with a controller. Your jump is on Shift and your dash is on Space. There's no way to rebind keys either. If you have muscle memory from every other game in existence you will end up dying over and over again due to the weird control scheme and will have to switch to a controller I did just so you can actually play the game and beat the boss. This is a huge miss in my opinion and really ruined an in so far great gaming experience for me. There are plenty of good things to say about this game but you can read other reviews for that info. If you don't care about the weird telemetry and you're a controller gamer you should pick this up.
