Description
Get the complete Galactic Civilizations II saga including the acclaimed PC strategy game of the year Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords, the award winning expansion pack Dark Avatar, and the newest expansion pack Twilight of the Arnor!

Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords: Galactic Civilizations II is the sequel to 2003's hit turn-based strategy game of the same name. The player takes on the role of the leader of a space-faring civilization and must guide its expansion in a hostile galaxy. Gamers must balance their economic, technological, diplomatic, cultural, and military power to forge alliances, fight wars, and ultimately dominate the galaxy. The game is single-player and allows the player to play randomly generated galactic maps or play through a multi-mission campaign that tells the story of an ancient enemy called the Dread Lords.

Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar: The expansion pack for Stardock's award-winning hit strategy game, Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords. This expansion pack not only adds the usual content that expansion packs tend to do such as new opponents, new units and a new campaign. It also greatly expands the game play of Galactic Civilizations II. New features include asteroid belts on the map that can be mined for resources, unique planets that require special technologies to colonize, spies to conduct sabotage and destabilization (or used to protect your worlds from the same), new types of diplomatic treaties, an enhanced artificial intelligence engine, and much more!

Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor: The year is 2227 and the fire of war is consuming the galaxy thanks to the manipulations of the evil Dread Lords. But the remaining factions, led by the humans, have a plan to rid the galaxy of the Dread Lords once and for all.

Expand the Galactic Civilizations II universe with Terror Stars, unique technology trees per civilization, map editors, custom scenario makers, campaign editors, new types of ships, new planetary improvements, and much more!
  • Beautiful 3D engine brings planets, stars, asteroids and ship battles to life.
  • Create custom 3D ships piece-by-piece with your Shipyard.
  • Play as any of a dozen unique civilizations or create your own.
  • Multiple paths to victory: Military conquest, cultural domination, political alliance, technological supremacy or ascension.

Probably my favorite space empire game

Most space empire builders require extensive study just to understand the basic concepts, and avoid getting wiped out by the first enemy you meet. This game gives you basic concepts that you can grasp pretty quickly, but has enough layers of depth that I wind up thinking "okay, that kind of worked, but it would have worked so much better if I had ..." That's a good point for a game to be at. The gameplay is both fun and challenging.

First look is always wrong

To be really honest, It's a very overestimated title. Yes, GUI is brilliant (bells and whistles for Windows interface was the main and only Stardock skill before they began to create games). But all the rest is questionnable at best. The most praised feature of GalCiv2, race-specific tech trees - are broken, because race AIs don't work as they planned to. So in fact the game is unplayable without Altarn's AI patch (google it). Stardock guys are arrogant and haughty, they never confess their mistakes and are interested only in profit (as Stardock always does, alas). God bless the community! Space battles are automatic and have shallow stone-paper-scissors mechanics as well as weapon system in whole. Ship designer could give some fun (at first) but you should realize soon that most of its features are just cosmetic changes and rather useless. Diplomacy is dull and inadequate (as always in 4X TBS games). The only really enjoyable part of gameplay is exploring the map, looking for sweet spots for colonize and for resources to build your war machine. There is also a quite interesting and useful system of space stations of various purposes (economic, diplomatic, war, influence, mining and so on). But overall impression is spoiled by broken AIs that can't let you enjoy the possibilities put into this game.

Sorry I have to grumble...

...but it seems like the GalCiv2 version offered here at GOG right now includes some parts of a "Community Update", which is not installed/implemented properly - so basically does not even work as intended. See thread "GalCiv2 - How to play vanilla version?" in the GOG forums and the official Stardock forum for more information. I hope this will be fixed so we get a clean installation of the final officially released/patched version of GalCiv2. Don't get me wrong, I am all for community modding and improvements - but if a game is sold here, it should be the unmodded official release and should not include third party stuff, especially if that stuff is not even implemented properly. Whether I want to use mods and unofficial fixes or not should be my decision to make. Thanks a lot in advance! Should this issue be fixed some day you can forget about this review…

Dated, yes, but still worth it today.

I am gaming for about 25 years now and GalCiv2: Twilight of the Arnor is still one of THE BEST EXPANSION I have seen in my life (and yes, it's part of this edition). GalCiv 2 graphics and systems are a bit dated now, but definitely not to the point it's no longer worth playing it or anything. If you have a weaker PC - get this one over GalCiv 3. If you're short on cash - get this one over GalCiv 3. I basically consider this game to be a an asymetric version of civ 4, but on steroids and in space. It may not be civ 6 nor humankind, but it's still very good. And for 10 bucks - it's a steal.

MOOII is still better

Let's start with what's good. There's a big variety in alien races. Diplomacy has very specific bargain chips which is rare in modern strategy games. The graphics are great and finding new planets and territories to claim is really cool. I also like the random events and the alignment system. What's wrong with this game? Combat is a stupid rock paper scissors affair that destroys the point of ship customization. It's sad that there are many games that has MOOII's cool combat system. I could have also been playing wrong but it takes a lot longer to do anything in terms of war vs MOOII... Overall this makes a great looking but boring game. It's very strange that after all these years MOOII is still king.
