Description
Get the complete Galactic Civilizations II saga including the acclaimed PC strategy game of the year Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords, the award winning expansion pack Dark Avatar, and the newest expansion pack Twilight of the Arnor!

Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords: Galactic Civilizations II is the sequel to 2003's hit turn-based strategy game of the same name. The player takes on the role of the leader of a space-faring civilization and must guide its expansion in a hostile galaxy. Gamers must balance their economic, technological, diplomatic, cultural, and military power to forge alliances, fight wars, and ultimately dominate the galaxy. The game is single-player and allows the player to play randomly generated galactic maps or play through a multi-mission campaign that tells the story of an ancient enemy called the Dread Lords.

Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar: The expansion pack for Stardock's award-winning hit strategy game, Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords. This expansion pack not only adds the usual content that expansion packs tend to do such as new opponents, new units and a new campaign. It also greatly expands the game play of Galactic Civilizations II. New features include asteroid belts on the map that can be mined for resources, unique planets that require special technologies to colonize, spies to conduct sabotage and destabilization (or used to protect your worlds from the same), new types of diplomatic treaties, an enhanced artificial intelligence engine, and much more!

Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor: The year is 2227 and the fire of war is consuming the galaxy thanks to the manipulations of the evil Dread Lords. But the remaining factions, led by the humans, have a plan to rid the galaxy of the Dread Lords once and for all.

Expand the Galactic Civilizations II universe with Terror Stars, unique technology trees per civilization, map editors, custom scenario makers, campaign editors, new types of ships, new planetary improvements, and much more!
  • Beautiful 3D engine brings planets, stars, asteroids and ship battles to life.
  • Create custom 3D ships piece-by-piece with your Shipyard.
  • Play as any of a dozen unique civilizations or create your own.
  • Multiple paths to victory: Military conquest, cultural domination, political alliance, technological supremacy or ascension.

Overrated

Playing the official Stardock release with the CU update that is now official and included in the game. This game has a reputation for having a good AI but I don't find it's the case. I still have to try mods, but fighting against an AI that never use shields on ships (only offense) is lame. There's too much random element, rarely you get a good starting planet and/or a good spot in the galaxy, mostly you get such a crappy start that makes you restart the game, hoping for some decency. Not hopeless but it doesn't hold up to its reputation. Maybe mods can save it, I don't know.

Clunky at 1440p

I've been playing this game since it's release, and for the longest time it was my favorite space 4x. Once in a while I felt an urge to play, and usually one game was not enough to satisfy my urge. However, I recently bought a large 1440p monitor and I must say that I cannot enjoy GalCiv II on this behemoth. The interface that I once liked now feels clunky. Some screens have me scan from left (where the label of a parameter is) to the right of the screen (where the value of that parameter is) and I have to move my head in the process. It feels... old? Also, I was never really bothered by the graphics or the music in this game, but since I recently got into Stellaris I have found that on both accounts, GalCiv II is finally showing it's age. Speaking of Stellaris, after many tries I finally understood how to play it and I'm sorry to say there's no comparing these two games. Stellaris is much more modern, atmospheric, detailed, sophisticated and artistic than GalCiv II. The learning curve is a lot steeper, but IMO totally worth it. TLDR: until Stellaris came along I would have recommended GalCiv II to everyone looking for a space 4x. Now, I'd recommend that you watch some gameplay of both Stellaris and GalCiv II before buying. And if you already have Stellaris, I don't think this is gonna offer anything that you don't already have.

Name a better Space 4x since MOO2?

It's the best 4X since MOO2. It's 4.99. That's all you need to know. Some will like it, some won't. For the price of a coffee these days you can't go wrong.

I wouldn't call it a good game

GalCiv II is one of the least fun 4xs I've ever played. The only one I've played that was worse was Master of Orion III (which set an amazing new low for shittiness, but I'm comparing GalCiv II to good games, not to the worst 4x ever). GalCiv II doesn't really compare to even MoO II in terms of fun, or to Sword of the Stars: Complete for meaningful strategic choice. In SotS: Complete, the AIs are competent and challenging despite having actual meaningful differences between the weapons, as compared to GalCiv II's straight rock-paper-scissors tech tree, which I can only assume was implemented because Stardock couldn't figure out how to make a competent AI without crippling player choice to make everything easy for the AI to calculate (at the time they were saying it was the BEST AI EVER). Caveat: I haven't played GalCiv II in years and only own "Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords" and "GalCiv II - Dark Avatar" (the first expansion), because I decided not to throw good money after bad.
