Get the complete Galactic Civilizations II saga including the acclaimed PC strategy game of the year Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords, the award winning expansion pack Dark Avatar, and the newest expansion pack Twilight of the Arnor!

Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords: Galactic Civilizations II is the sequel to 2003's hit turn-based strategy game of the same name. The player takes on the role of the leader of a space-faring civilization and must guide its expansion in a hostile galaxy. Gamers must balance their economic, technological, diplomatic, cultural, and military power to forge alliances, fight wars, and ultimately dominate the galaxy. The game is single-player and allows the player to play randomly generated galactic maps or play through a multi-mission campaign that tells the story of an ancient enemy called the Dread Lords.

Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar: The expansion pack for Stardock's award-winning hit strategy game, Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords. This expansion pack not only adds the usual content that expansion packs tend to do such as new opponents, new units and a new campaign. It also greatly expands the game play of Galactic Civilizations II. New features include asteroid belts on the map that can be mined for resources, unique planets that require special technologies to colonize, spies to conduct sabotage and destabilization (or used to protect your worlds from the same), new types of diplomatic treaties, an enhanced artificial intelligence engine, and much more!

Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor: The year is 2227 and the fire of war is consuming the galaxy thanks to the manipulations of the evil Dread Lords. But the remaining factions, led by the humans, have a plan to rid the galaxy of the Dread Lords once and for all.

Expand the Galactic Civilizations II universe with Terror Stars, unique technology trees per civilization, map editors, custom scenario makers, campaign editors, new types of ships, new planetary improvements, and much more!
  • Beautiful 3D engine brings planets, stars, asteroids and ship battles to life.
  • Create custom 3D ships piece-by-piece with your Shipyard.
  • Play as any of a dozen unique civilizations or create your own.
  • Multiple paths to victory: Military conquest, cultural domination, political alliance, technological supremacy or ascension.

The CU is an official update

Let's make this clear: This "Ultimate Edition" offered here at GOG is truly the ultimate edition, since it includes the OFFICIAL Community-based update. And yes, it's official, even if it was created by the modding community of the game, because it turns out that Stardock, the developer of the series, asked the fanbase for help in fixing the remaining bugs of the last vanilla version of the UE. So now, witch the last CU, the game is GREAT and the AI is not broken anymore (quite the contrary, it's almost perfect). However, a fair warning: this game is not truly like Master of Orion. This game (the gameplay) is like Civilization in space. I mean, check the name; "Galactic CIVILIZATIONS".

A worthy successor to Master Of Orion II

It's probably a bad idea to write a review because you happen to deeply disagree with a negative review. Like the man said "I am therefore going anyway.". It's not a perfect game - it is true that, barring exceptionally bad luck, playing on the 'Even' level (as I habitually do in most games) with neither bonuses nor handicaps you are pretty certain to win. And like many 4X games the perfectionist emperor will find himself going through many colonies to make sure they are built in the 'ideal' fashion and not building sections out of order. That said, the only slightly less perfectionist tyrant can get to 'pretty efficient' with only minimal setting of priorities and ordering of build queues. The rest of the game is Amazing. Not perfect - space is still a 2 dimensional chessboard. But the AI's have their own strategies, personalities, and styles, and can react in unexpected ways. They will happily ally with you and plot against you as fits their long term goals. And it's *fun*. Ship Building, Cinematic Battles, huge galaxies, occasionally finding precursor technology, a karma system, even a way to store ship design from game to game. Perfect? Nah. Worthy? Absolutely.

Don't forget to turn off mega events...

Welcome to Galactic Civilizations 2. You will certainly have a good time due to the game's advantages like: - One BC resource system (just like 1993 MOO) - Competitive AI (Fixed by Community, now official patch) - Great Tech tree, lots of paths to choose from - Espionage, trade and diplomacy that actually work together towards a political goal BUT TURN OFF "MEGA EVENTS" CHECKBOX when you start the game! If you don't the game is going to ruin your week. Here's my story: 20 hours into the game I was playing peacefully, not at war, fleet in being. I was carefully crafting trade dependencies and fragile alliances to keep my opponents blocked. I was selling technologies to weaker races to stop wars, only to allow me to achievie political victory. I was prooving myself to be a worthy ruler of the galaxy. 20 long hours of careful planning, espionage, smart decisions, building power brick by brick, playing political chess, having a lot of fun... Suddenly BAM!!! The game flips the table and laughs at you with a pop-up message like this: "Oh, looks like you are bored, how about putting 5x stronger pirate ships in all of your systems out of nowhere?" They actually destroyed everything, they are always 5 times stronger and they always win. In 3 turns I went from number one to the bottom of the list being bullied by my former vassals with tribute demands. Game over, I regret theese 20 hours I will come back one day and unckeck "Mega Events" - - 1 star for learning this painful lesson

My favorite and here's why

GalCiv2 Ultimate is a great game and ranks a little above MOO2 for me. The core game is good, but the Star Trek vs Star Wars MOD makes this game amazing. Link Here: http://forums.galciv2.com/448534/page/1/#3632162 Add the ability to easily MOD this game to suit your play style makes it the best ever, I've been playing the game for what seems like a decade and still play it in 2017. What I really appreciate is that I've played this game on many different systems over the years. Windows XP, Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 10. That is a sign of a well coded game to me. Lots of re-playability and options that allow you to play a different game every time. The races are different and have unique tech and abilities which I love. For under $10.00 you would be crazy to pass up this game. At the time of this writing GalCiv2 is still better than GalCiv3 in my opinion.

GalCiv 2 vs 3 + links to guide & mods

Features in GC3 which are not present in GC2: - Civilizations can be build tall (restrict development on 1 planet and be successful) due to leaders. - Strategic resources can be traded and is used for equipment on ships. Monopolies are possible. - Warp gates (DLC) - Efficiency of buildings depend on adjacency of building type, thus placement matters (puzzle element) - Upgrading star bases do not require constructors (less micromanagement). - Training soldiers for invasions Features in GC2 which are not present in GC3: - Minor races (neutral and passive) - Trade ships are moving across the map and can be attacked (economies can be crippled) - Major mod overhauls - Death Star which is able to destroy planets in 1 shot. Galciv 3 adds more complexity (in the case of having all DLCs), lessens micromanagement but at the same time cuts out some cool features from Galciv 2, like minor races, death stars and trade ships. The AI in GC2 seems to be better than GC3. The thing I'm missing most in GC2 is the warp gate with strategic resources as second. Both games are not that different. I personally play GC2 more often than GC3. Both games are anti-climax (it boils down to map painting). The thing that annoys me in the third entry is training a parallel population (soldiers) for invasions while GC2 just subtracts them from your main population. Be aware that playing on maps bigger than 'large' may crash your game due to memory limitations. I have not played a sufficient amount of games with mods to give you a proper comparison/analyses between those (finished 1 game with each of the 3 mods from the download link below is not sufficient in my opinion). If you have a low-end machine I would recommend GC2, otherwise skip them both and try GC4.
