In an ultimately frozen world, people develop steam-powered technology to oppose the overwhelming cold. The city ruler has to manage both the inhabitants and the infrastracture the citizens live in. Leader’s tactical skills face challenges, frequently questioning morality and the basic foundation of what we consider an organized society. Here optimization and resource management often clash with empathy and thoughtful decision-making. While city and society management consume most of the ruler’s time, at some point exploration of outside world is necessary to understand its history and present state.
What decisions will you make so the society can survive? What will you do when pushed to the limits? And...
...who will you become in the process?
THE CITY MUST SURVIVE
Frostpunk is a city-survival game where heat means life and every decision comes with a cost.
MAINTAIN THE HOPE
Survival is about hope and will to live. Your ability to spark and maintain these two in your people will be a determinant factor for success.
MAKE THE LAW
Society is a group of people abiding the same rules and sharing similar beliefs. Establishing laws and customs will be a crucial factor shaping your society.
WEIGHT YOUR CHOICES
Will you allow child-labour? How will you treat the sick and wounded? Frostpunk challenges a player’s tactical skills, while questioning one’s morality.
EXPLORE
The world covers not only bits of the past but also the potential means to secure the future of your people.
A wonderful game in which you are in charge of a whole "city", everything depends on you and that's great.
The game offers you a lot of fun (and a lot of challenge), all laws you will have to approve (spoiler: you can become dictator of the new world order).
There are a lot of possibilities and options.
Definitely worth those € 30 worth.
P.D If you find it too difficult, lower the difficulty to easy
Main scenario is solid 5/5. Game mechanics, music, visuals, exploration, events, quests, choices, scenario unique mechanics and storyline mixed together are creating immersive experience. Gameplay is rather simple but there is enough room for decisions (various ways of getting resources, different branches in Book of Laws). There are some wierd design choices, such as there is no way to change laws, which my lead to beig stuck with unpopular laws that were passed to fight a crisis or with more popular that are a handicap during hard times.
Other scenarios received less polish than main one and their quality is varied. For example many laws from purpose category were tied to main scenario's mechanics and as a consequence purpose laws are either feel a bit off or are completely absent from other scenarios. The Refugees scenario feels especially lacking because it dealt with a interesting theme of mitigating a conflict between lower and upper class by series of quite abstract quests (feed people, heal them, fight discontent etc.) and few events. Frospunk is advertised as "society survival" game and it failed it's premise in this scenario. There are currently 4 scenarios total and only main feels 100% polished, other there aren't bade, some are better, some are worse, but the initial magic is gone. Endless mode helps a bit with lack of content.
Overall this is a solid game, which I definitely recommend however it have problems with replayability and varied quality of content but all complains aside, it is worth buying just for the amazing atmosphere and epic conclusuion of main story.
Quite the fun challenge. I dreamt of managing resources that night after beating the campaign, "A New Home". It's quite the thinking game, and tuning your play to finding that balance managing your resources to win. I loved how the music ramped up the further you progress. Overall the creativity and art style of the game was pretty neat., and the UI art and UX is amazing.
My recommendation is to play on the slowest setting and pause often and make changes that aren't working often. Otherwise as a new player you will make mistakes if you go too fast.
Some things in this game aren't very obvious and I still don't know the answer. Example questions would be:
"do my workers get cold when building?",
"what's the prioritization if all my workers are working and I say to build a building?"
"what are the benefits of roads, do my workers move faster?"
"how do I remove hungry/sick workers from a building and replace them with idle workers?"
It would be nice if their tutorial guide was more in-depth or linked to a reference guide in-game. I hope Frost Punk 2 has something like this with a search function.
I was surprised just how much I enjoyed this game. I recommend that you save often because it only takes one very bad choice to completely annihilate your colony. I was not expecting the "final boss" but absolutely loved it! I felt like the stakes were incredibly high and every little choice I made meant life or death for my citizens.
