An emotional experience.

Frostpunk is Steampunkish city-builder set at the end of the 19th century. After a series of cataclysmic volcanic eruptions, Earth is plunged into a new ice-age. A small band of refugees must survive any way they can. You are their 'Captain' and must take charge, fire up their coal-powered generator tower, and see them safely through the long, cold winter... The attention to detail, graphics, music and general Steampunk atmosphere are great, and the hard choices and grim consequences that I had to deal with throughout really made me connect with events and the poor little computer people as they froze and starved. I was eventually forced to adopt either 'Order' (think Communism/Fascism) or 'Faith' (religious fanatacism) to keep control of your people - I chose Order and tried to be a reasonably benevolent dictator, but it's possible to set oneself up as Supreme Leader with secret police, torture, propaganda centres etc. By the time I made it to the end of the first scenario I was genuinely moved by what had happened and was very impressed on the whole. Powerful stuff. A few flaws - progress in the early stages is very linear; without knowing what things to build early on it is very easy to get chewed up by the first bit of real cold, and even though later on there is more room to choose how one eventually faces up to the endgame, I don't think further playthroughs would be much different. One playthrough of the main story (A New Home) took me about 6 hours, so it is also a little on the short side. New scenarios are being added though so hopefully there will a more varied game on the way. Personally I would like to see a free play mode with no time limit.

A touching, unique experience

Frostpunk is a city building game dripping with atmosphere, tension and hard choices. You must manage the Hope and Disorder of your people while gathering resources, building your city to withstand the cold and exploring the frozen wastes around you. Early in the game it will occur to you that if you just introduced child labour then you could gather that coal fast enough to fuel the Generator and keep everyone from freezing to death. This is the recurring question and emotional core of the game: will you do anything to ensure the city survives or will you find another way? The importance of this question is reinforced when you read the messages from your people, see their footsteps in the beautifully rendered snow and listen to the howling winds and atmospheric music. At launch the game consists of three scenarios. I found the last scenario, “The Refugees”, to be a bit buggy: quests requiring me to feed people would refuse to complete even though no one was hungry and I had hundreds of rations stockpiled. Aside from that, each scenario delivers a compelling story with a wonderfully satisfying, albeit definite, end. There is currently no sandbox mode and it might be that the city building is not complex enough (eg. no resource chains) to support it. Playing through every scenario once on standard difficulty with a couple of restarts when I messed up took me 5 hours. You could replay on Hard, try to get all the achievements and make some different choices but ultimately this is not a game that will last you months. Instead, Frostpunk delivers focused experience that has the good sense to end on a high note and leave you wanting more.

Amazing Game!

Im going to say that this is among the best games i ever played. The gameplay is super interesting and captivating. Its not just an simple strategy game, you have to think about what you do. The story and specially sound just pull you right in. Specially if you have an good sound system set up. Cold, Intense Joy to play. Highly Recommend.

Storytelling+/Balancing-/Optimization--

I wish I could give something between 3.5 and 4 stars to FrostPunk. The game has something great in it, the mechanics are simple, and the story is really well crafted and engaging. I still need to find the correct settings for the difficulty. But : The basic difficulty settings are badly balanced, in normal I keep loosing not knowing what to change (10 times in a row applying a new strategy each time), while in easy, it's a free win. I don't want to think about the hard settings. I understand it could be a game design choice (surviving in the frost must be difficult, so the game must be difficult), but still I don't feel satisfied about the difficulty. And big point here, I play in low graphic settings on a 2000€ laptop, and still, the game is rising GPU and CPU temperature at 90°C and more before I decided to stop the game... the game look great but seriously ! Maybe i'll change my mind about the difficulty when I'll find the settings I want. Maybe i'll change my mind about the optimization with an update. It's Overall a good game, it keeps me engaged even if it has problems.

Best game, EVER !

One of my the best gaming experiences since The Witcher 3. The atmosphere is amazing, of course very depressing, but it was the aim! Looks beautiful, sounds very good :)
