As a pilot for the Galactic Terran Alliance (GTA) you are no stranger to war. But when racing through space to engage your new enemy for the first time, you sense something different. Suddenly, darkness blankets your craft. Your stomach sinks as your eyes pan across the Shivan flagship's massive body. Then it begins. Swarms of fighters pour from the belly of the flagship and scream towards you. You are about to discover everything you thought you knew about space combat just changed.
This is the beginning of The Great War.
Includes the original Freespace and the Silent Threat mission pack
Multiple beautiful space fighters and bombers with customizable loadouts
A gripping story full of epic space battles and plot twists
I recently pried myself from FreeSpace 2 and gave 1 a shot and I'm glad I did. An amazing game which still stands on it own merits despite the sequel, a great story line and some pretty awesome missions.
The addon missions are a bit meh but playing through the excellent main campaign is pretty much mandatory if you want to get more enjoyment out of FS2 and it's well worth your time and money.
5/5!
After all the games I have played, this one along with Freespace 2, are the only ones I keep coming back to. The campiagn is so compelling that even after finishing the game I was absolutely obsessed in finding out more about the Freespace universe. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for anyone!!!! :)
I was first introduced to space sims via the Tie-Fighter and X-Wing series. Freespace is definitely reminiscent of those great games. A joystick is recommended for that, "in the cockpit" feeling, but a sensitive mouse works for the most part. Some of the level can be difficult at times, but the player can also adjust the difficulty on the fly and restarting a mission is a very quick task with almost no loading time on my Lenovo T400 laptop. The enemy ships are well designed and distinct so that you can easily tell what spacecraft you are fighting. The story doesn't have much in the way of surprises, but it does put you in the mood to kick some aliens out of our galaxy. Missions also require that you make sure your squads are placed strategically so it isn't just a matter of fighting. Shield distribution and power, engine power, and weapon power are configurable in the heat of battle while loadouts, squads, and craft types are modifiable before most missions. There is a good mix of escort, inspection, fighter vs. fighter, and bomber vs. capital missions.
Freespace and Freespace 2 are as good as space sims get.. If you are a fan of Battlestar Galactica or a sci-fi fan in general they are really worth looking at.
I bought the first Freespace years ago, played it then lost it the disk!! The most interactive game I've ever played, incorporating flight controls with squadron command. It sucks you in with the story line. Love this game. And the sequel, FreeSpace 2.
