Description
The heartless Shivans emerged through subspace near Earth, harboring technology light years ahead of anything seen before. They made no attempt to communicate. They did not respond to your heralds. They simply attacked and destroyed everything in their path.

As a pilot for the Galactic Terran Alliance (GTA) you are no stranger to war. But when racing through space to engage your new enemy for the first time, you sense something different. Suddenly, darkness blankets your craft. Your stomach sinks as your eyes pan across the Shivan flagship's massive body. Then it begins. Swarms of fighters pour from the belly of the flagship and scream towards you. You are about to discover everything you thought you knew about space combat just changed.

This is the beginning of The Great War.
  • Includes the original Freespace and the Silent Threat mission pack
  • Multiple beautiful space fighters and bombers with customizable loadouts
  • A gripping story full of epic space battles and plot twists

Fantastic FreeSpace

This game is unlike others. It's easy to get into. And hard to leave. The plot is railroaded and linear, but the pacing is perfection. The story is great - reading the FreeSpace bible shows the developers really managed to get most of what they planned into the game (a rare feat). I know some people dislike a railroaded plot, but I loved it here - it was like being the protagonist in a well-written novelette. I can't change the story, but I wouldn't want to; I could only make it worse. The story captures the emotions, and leads the player along a journey which, surprisingly for a game, contains a moral lesson. The early game ends feeling on the defensive against what could only be described as a god. But, slowly, as humanity understands their technology, the god is deconstructed, until we feel we are their equal. And then, the game enters the final act - our hubris at believing ourselves equal to god destroys us, and shatters our foolish "myth of humanity everlasting" (a great quote from the opening of FreeSpace 2). Though technologically inferior to FreeSpace 2, the lesson on the folly of pride, and the perfect pacing places this game, in my opinion, well above the sequel. This game captured my fantasy and emotions like few other - placing it in the same class as Half Life, Deus Ex, and Baldur's Gate. A great game - buy it.

Shatered Star

Many of the old timers remember me and the Shattered Star Confederation. It was an awesome on line event back in the day. Too bad Volition had to be such introverts. This game will always be one of the best at the time.

Still an excellent game...

Freespace is a game that has top notch re-playability, excellent story line, awesome dog fighting, and great multiplayer(vs. and co-op). This game stands up to the space games of today, with large scale battles and completely open environment. Having the original game, I have put hours upon hours into it, I'm very happy that this game was dusted off, and put into GOG. I recommend this game, one of my favorites growing up, and still is, awesome price, awesome game... Definitely a 5 star rating...

Spectacular!

Being a bit of a sci-fi fan and a flight sim fan, Freespace was the best of both worlds. I fired up the game and was simply drawn into the whole storyline. As with Wing Commander, the controls and gameplay was straight forward enough to pick up quickly and allowed you to get on with completing the mission. But the graphics and special effects were jaw-dropping and are still quite impressive now. There's little more I can say to improve on what has already been said but get buying!
