As a pilot for the Galactic Terran Alliance (GTA) you are no stranger to war. But when racing through space to engage your new enemy for the first time, you sense something different. Suddenly, darkness blankets your craft. Your stomach sinks as your eyes pan across the Shivan flagship's massive body. Then it begins. Swarms of fighters pour from the belly of the flagship and scream towards you. You are about to discover everything you thought you knew about space combat just changed.
This is the beginning of The Great War.
Includes the original Freespace and the Silent Threat mission pack
Multiple beautiful space fighters and bombers with customizable loadouts
A gripping story full of epic space battles and plot twists
I you remember and liked the Wing Commander series then you will also like Freespace. Compared to Wing Commander, Freespace IMO has a much better history.
I remember first playing this game and being blown away by how huge it was. This was in the days leading up to the revolution of the dedicated video accelerator. The story was great and the missions were engaging. The only thing I didn't like was that the game didn't age well, and my Windows 7/Vista computer wouldn't play it. Thank you GoG for reviving this classic!
A really great space game. We get thrown into a equally sided war between humans and their longterm enemies the vasudans, but after a while a new race appears slaughtering both humans and aliens. So far so standard, but the gameplay really sets the game apart. It is beyond rock solid. The controls work wonderfully in whatever way you like, there are different models of ship you accumulate over the missions, you can arm them individually and your AI partners are not totally useless. If you ever wanted to lead squads of fighters into battle against GIANT spacecruisers (though not as giant as the ones in the sequel), get this. You will not regret it, as you desperately fight to save the galaxy.
Brilliant game from start to finish, amazing dog fighting, great graphics for it's time (especially if you play it with the Source Code Project) very replayable, nothing like watching two huge ships dueling while you are flying between them.
The story is good too and gives you a sense of peril and excitement watching it unfold
What I really like about the Freespace games is the ludicrously over-serious narrative tone.
They start off profoundly, end-of-the-universely apocalyptic, and get progressively more grave and grim from there on in.
Even though it makes me chuckle, it's very effective - a player really feels in his gut that it's extremely important not to fail.
On top of that, the Freespace games are on their own in a field that ought to be crowded. Everybody loves a good 3D vector space shooter. Howcum there are so few of them about?
Probably because Freespace 1 & 2 are so completely definitive. Goodness knows how a developer could even begin to make something "like Freespace, but better".
As you can probably tell, I kinda like Freespace. The only gripe I can imagine some people having is that it's complicated to play and there are so very many buttons to press. But hey; keep banging the rocks together, guys! ;)
