About the game
They took your freedom. It's time to take it back!
Freedom Fighters is an intense third-person action game set in an alternate history New York during the invasion of a foreign superpower. Take on the role of Chris Stone, a hard-working plumber, and rise through the ranks of the resistance to prove yourself as a charismatic leader.
Liberate supplies, scavenge weapons and use the 'recruit and command' system to grow the resistance and lead up to 12 freedom fighters into strategic conflicts throughout the campaign. Travel across the city and complete interconnected missions where your actions in one level affect the battles in another.
Originally released in 2003, IO Interactive's cult classic is now available digitally in its original form for the first time.
About the soundtrack
The Freedom Fighters Soundtrack features 18 tracks that are produced by acclaimed music composer Jesper Kyd. Combining live choir performances by the Hungarian Radio Choir with techno beats and other electronic instruments, Kyd effortlessly captures the vibe of the game and the epic quest to liberate New York from a foreign superpower.

Freedom Fighters is great concept-wise, the music equally so, it takes a bit of strategy of what targets to take down first to weaken enemy forces before you can launch a attack on the enemy HQ outright (although you're never stopped from attempting to do so) the downside is it's archaic shooting, the weapons have a very large spread, the HUD doesn't scale well to modern resolutions and the AI is dumb as rocks.
So it's a big give and take but for what it was at the time, it's still considered a gem.
Seeing GOG support old games still blows me away. While the game plays there were some issues with mouse DPI in menus being slow but still useable. The mechanics are outdates but just being able to shoot things has never really ever gone out of style mechanically. Still worth a play if you remember playing way back when.
I had this on CD back in the day, and it was an unforgettable experience. Freedom Fighters delivered some of the best guerrilla action of its time, with a simple yet effective squad mechanic, a strong narrative, and levels that burned themselves into my memory. And of course, piling the commies never gets old.
The graphics may be outdated, but they’ve aged gracefully. More importantly, the game’s soul remains intact. The soundtrack is an absolute banger, and the characters are very well written.
Some missions pushed me hard (taking out the tank, for example), but the difficulty never felt unfair. Even on the higher settings, every challenge felt conquerable with a bit of persistence.
The map design walks a tightrope between open-ended freedom and purposeful linearity. It never feels bloated or aimless.
I didn’t encounter a single bug, glitch, or soft lock during my playthrough. That kind of polish is rare.
My favorite mission is still Desperate Revenge, the stealth op at the docks where I could finally eliminate Tatarin. The tension in that buildup, the creeping sense of danger, and then the chaos that erupts when the Hinds show up (or not, if I take the alternate route and just jump into the water, swimming back to the boat peacefully)… unforgettable.
I wish I had the money to pick it up again on GOG. I miss this game. It deserves to be remembered.
