About the game

They took your freedom. It's time to take it back!

Freedom Fighters is an intense third-person action game set in an alternate history New York during the invasion of a foreign superpower. Take on the role of Chris Stone, a hard-working plumber, and rise through the ranks of the resistance to prove yourself as a charismatic leader.

Liberate supplies, scavenge weapons and use the 'recruit and command' system to grow the resistance and lead up to 12 freedom fighters into strategic conflicts throughout the campaign. Travel across the city and complete interconnected missions where your actions in one level affect the battles in another.

Originally released in 2003, IO Interactive's cult classic is now available digitally in its original form for the first time.

About the soundtrack

The Freedom Fighters Soundtrack features 18 tracks that are produced by acclaimed music composer Jesper Kyd. Combining live choir performances by the Hungarian Radio Choir with techno beats and other electronic instruments, Kyd effortlessly captures the vibe of the game and the epic quest to liberate New York from a foreign superpower.

Originally released in 2003. Music composed and produced by Jesper Kyd. Performed by Jesper Kyd and the Hungarian Radio Choir.

2000's action movie cheese at its finest

- Cheesey 2000's action movie plot of blue collar plumber rising up through the ranks of a Soviet invasion of New York. - Interesting non-linear objective design where you have a number of levels with a number of objectives and the order you complete them may make your job easier or harder. For example your main objective may be taking over a stronghold. Problem is the stronghold has an attack chopper and troop reinforcement. You *can* attack it directly but it'll be really hard so instead you can go to another location and destroy the helipad for the chopper and destroy some bridges to cut off reinforcements. These support objectives usually impact each other as well so there's not usually an optimal objective completion path. - The squad AI is pretty competent aside from minor pathfinding problems on stairwells and narrow paths. Much like the enemies they take cover well and take advantage of fixed weapons with simple commands on the 1 2 3 keys, follow, attack, defend respectively. Can order as a squad or individually but don't expect to micromanage. - Guns work on a bloom cone, meaning your shots won't often go exactly as you aim. This is both blessing and curse. On the one hand it makes accurate shooting without a sniper rifle annoying but on the other hand makes your squad more valuable as they can support you through volume of fire and numbers. You're a squad leader who can hold their own but aren't a one man army

A history that almost almost happened

I remember this. The trailer still sends the coldest and most damp shivers up my spine. It makes my heart turn into the heaviest lead, and then plunge into the abyss, but before it can disappear forever, the arm of an angel reaches down and catches it, and sends it up to the sky again. It actually feels like the sensation of riding an incredibly wild roller coaster that is so wild, that you can't imagine how the engineers approved its construction. The soundtrack is incredible. The story actually makes you care. The ending had me in tears, and I wanted to keep on saving the world, but the game just ends at this point where I wish it didn't. The game made you feel like your team was really with you, and fought along side you. I almost can't believe EA had anything to do with it. Different times. This game made me feel completely helpless and doomed, like this is it. this is the end. and then suddenly, it let me fight my way back out to victory. It gave me back hope and let me try to save the world. Suddenly, I had the ability to make a difference and save all my buddies, and it was absolutely breath taking. For the time it came out, solid 10/10. gameplay has aged, but everything else is TIMELESS. Listen IO Interactive. You're independent now right? No more EA? No more Square Enix? Well listen up men and women of IO Interactive, WE NEED A SEQUEL. WE NEED IT REALLY REALLY BAD! I will only buy the sequel if it has NO DRM, NO Devnouvo anti cheat, NO EAC (easy anti cheat) and basically NO EA and NO Square Enix. Just don't put anything unnecessary in the sequel, PLEASE. I really really want it. I NEEEEEEEEEEEED IT. This is your time to SHINE! I am not making any business or legal advice or suggestions. I am not a professional legal or business person. I'm just a random person who loves video games. Make the sequel, or don't. Your risk, your choice, do your own research. But hey, if you do make it, and it looks really really good, chances are I'm gonna buy that.incredible

Thank you for bringing it back!

I remember I got this game one day at a gamestop when they still sold PC games in the jewel cases like music albums used to come in. I played this game like 3 times or so back in the day, and now that computers don't really have optical drives anymore, I can't use my old copy. Even if I had an optical drive, the original pc version was made for windows xp. Last time I played it, I had to run it in a virtual machine, and it was really annoying. I'm really happy to have an updated copy that I can use easily. It's a great game with a compelling story, and it's just plain fun to play. Thanks again for getting this available again.

A competent, colourless squad shooter

The most interesting thing to me about Freedom Fighters, a mid-2000's shooter on the XBox is that it's extremely demonstrative of the time it was made and the platform it was released on. There were a lot of shooters on the XBox released around this time that look and play like this- it's a genre that's not seen quite as commonly nowadays, squad mechanics having been almost entirely supplanted with co-op in modern games. Also, it's about in the middle in terms of enjoyment; it's competently made, but nothing special. The game is set during an alternate timeline with a Soviet invasion of the USA, with you playing the leader of a resistance movement in NYC operating from the sewers. The story is slightly above the minimum, enough to drive the game forward but otherwise largely forgettable. The game itself is... fine. It's squad mechanics are simple and intuitive, and the AI is responsive and reliable. It's key feature is multiple missions objectives that impact the environment- destroy a power line, and sneaking past the floodlights is easier, destroy the helipad so gunships don't harass you and so on. The minute-to-minute gameplay is very simple, and quickly gets repetitive- this is a game to play in bursts. There a few rough edges, particularly with the camera and aiming, and like every shooter in the mid-2000's, it has stealth sections and no one likes them. If you had an XBox in 2003, you've played this game. Not this one exactly, but Brute Force, Conflict Desert Storm, Armed & Dangerous, Rogue Trooper- Freedom Fighters slots right into the middle of that list. It's not especially interesting on it's own in 2020, but if you didn't have an XBox and wonder what that era of games was like, this is about as representative as it gets.

Perfect

An absolute gem from the PS2 era. Played a lot with my brother (glory days ;-) ), and is pure nostalgia. It did age well tho, the controllers on PC are much better then the dualshock, more precise. Ah, and it can run on a Windows 7 by the way, that's good, because i hate Win10.
