Description
Three adventurers that have met by chance find the Demon Stone, an ancient prison, just as it breaks before their eyes. The contained evil is unleashed and the two wicked spirits of a Githyanki general and a Slaad lord once again threaten the world.

You take control of three heroes: Rannek the fighter, Illius the sorcerer, and Zhai the rogue. Each of them has his or her own unique set of spells. Switch between them any time you want, using their abilities to your advantage. As you progress through the game, your heroes gain levels, learn new skills and acquire powerful items. You will need them all to have even the slightest chance of defeating the ancient evil you stand against.
A new version of the build, prepared by SNEG and improved for modern operating systems, is available on the "Alternate Version" branch in GOG Galaxy, or via downloadable installers. Go HERE for an explanation of how to access beta channels in GOG Galaxy.

Campy, Stupid Fun

This game is not a tactical Dungeons and Dragons adventure. It's best viewed as a non-D&D game with a veneer of D&D paint, using some classic monsters and callbacks (feat names, item names) as well as the Forgotten Realms universe to set up a hack and slash adventure. Mow through monsters as the warrior or rogue or blow them to bits with your infinite-cast sorcerer and have a grand old time saving the world in one of the most generic ways possible. But hey! There's some lore flavor, and enough character to add some depth without being annoying. That being said, the fact that character development is basically the mains telling the other mains their share of the exposition feast might be a turn-off. What will definitely be a turn-off are three things, maybe four. The first: unskippable cutscenes. This gets annoying because they're pretty long, and all checkpoints go back to a cutscene which you must rewatch. Later in the game, reason three makes this worse. The second: If one party member dies, game over! Go back to a checkpoint. Since all checkpoints are cutscenes, reason one makes this annoying, and reason three amplifies it-- really this just bothers me because characters can occasionally die under AI control. The AI is quite competent, but when it fails, it's infuriating. The third: Poor checkpointing. You will almost certainly feel this on the later levels, and you will feel it on all levels if you're a glutton for punishment and choose Hard mode. Later levels will even send you back so far you have to rewatch more than one long, unskippable cutscene. The possible fourth: Repetitive combat makes up the majority of this game. Hack and slash and all that. There are some combos to mix it up, and the defense/riposte is very satisfying, but at the end of the day you have about six choices in combat. After seven levels (of ten), that's bound to get old, especially when you realize that most high level skills are just stronger versions of your low level skills.

I Love Demon Stone!

To this day i love this game, i bring it up while in a D&D campaigns once in awhile, i've even made the main characters in the Neverwinter MMO aswell as Baldurs Gate 3. This is what i had played before any actual D&D experience, this some books and the 2000 D&D Movie was my gateway to the universe and while it would be nice if this got an HD remaster i appreciate that it exists on GOG and i hope many newcomers to the Forgotten Realms can experience this game as dated and jank as it is, its a gem.

Good, but definitely not great. Short.

Nothing amazing. I didn't really make the D&D connection until I saw Githyanki in the story (I only know of them from Neverwinter Nights 2, the second game in a series I hold dear from my childhood). Like I said, it's not exactly what I'd give out awards for. It was relatively short, but the gameplay wasn't bad at all. The story didn't stun me, but it kept me engaged at least, so that's sort of a plus. Truth is, I barely remember the story. I bought the game dirt cheap, at a used games store, for PS2 and all I could think while playing it was "this feels like an inferior version of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" mainly because it lacked co-op. The game probably could have handled it, but the developers just decided this three-character game should be a single-player experience, I suppose. I don't mean to crap on the game and if you can pick it up for like $5 you will most likely enjoy the experience, but unless you really love D&D worlds, it's not going to stick in your mind long after you played it. It cannot compare to Neverwinter Nights' story, Lord of the Rings: RotK's co-op gameplay or stun you with its now-dated graphics. The world itself is nice, but pretty standard fare generic fantasy and I honestly don't remember much more than a cave/ruins, a forest area where I think elves lived and a wizard's tower crumbling under an assault. That all sounds much more interesting that I considered it to be, I think.

Great story with great acting

Ever since I played this at 15, I have imagined Patrick Stewart voicing Blackstaff. Choosing Y'Gorl, Lord of Chaos as the main adversary was a stroke of genius by Bob Salvatore, certainly better than the usual Realms' antagonists. Truly one of the best action RPGs I've ever played.
