pretty, nauseating, gimmick game

i read the reviews and knew what i was getting into when i bought this for a buck fiddy on deep sale. its a gimmick game built around a certain mechanism like flying or swimming or scuba diving that you see everywhere nowadays. thought it would be a short game to pleasantly waste time. it is pretty, in a mimimal graphic kind of way. the only graphics i saw were grass and petal leaves and some landscaping objects. the music is pretty bad, the score, not the flower plinks you get as you collect the flowers which i enjoyed. i ended up muting the music most of the way as it gets sooooo overly dramatic and loud its off putting. gameplay is minimal, you swoop and collect flowers which give off a musical note, each area has to be completed to go onto the next, with sub areas that 'bloom' once you gain all the flowers. controls are as others say weird. i was doing good but all the seesawing and arbitrarily swinging around camera views made me sick and frankly annoyed rather than calmed. controls allowed you to turn off mouse movement and steering but then it was dead in the water so i dont understand what that was for, perhaps joystick? who knows. i can see it being enjoyable for those without motion sickness or those who can overcome the fly controls. in the end i found it more irritating than pleasure and quit.

It's great, but way too short.

I finished this game in ~1.45 hours without rushing and even replaying 2 levels. I guess the price is justified and I can replay this game once again later...

Suddenly the save file disappeared

Save file disappeared without trace. No big deal. I probably would not have finished it anyway. The game is bland and empty. Must have impressed a lot of people back then when arty games weren’t common. Playing it now though, ”impressed” would not be the word i’d describe my experience with.

Fantastic game!

Still too many games these days, no much how much creativity devs try too stuff in, can be summarized as shooters, unfortunately. However in recent years there seems to be some advent of exploration games where you don't do that you do something else (like fly and admire). This game is one of these few exceptions where developers were thinking outside of box and created amazing, admirable and enjoyable game. Things I like about this game: - beautiful sceneries - exploration - flying! - no shooting, no violence, no nightmares after playing (appropriate for everyone) Only thing I found that could be improved is quite monotonic music, but fortunately can be turned off. After completing that one, I will probably take a look at Abzu, Subnautica or A Story About My Uncle which also share some similarities with that beautiful title.

Hard to see what anyone likes about it

I enjoy some art games and don't like the violence in most games but this one I can't see what anyone likes about it. More relevent I can also enjoy futility in games if there is something fun about it but this one I didn't find at all fun. From other reviews I can only guess the experince might at least be interesting in some way on the PS3 with the intended controller. The description promises a "personal and emotional expericence" but the only such thing I found was my rapidly growing frustration and I would have asked for a refund by the third or fourth area had I realized it hadn't yet been 30 days since I purchased it (at 75% off). The story itself is quite vague and impersonal (there is no text in the game other than the credits). I also wasn't fond of the graphics (the screenshots are representative, there isn't all that much more then you see there). There are two things you can do: swooping down to collect petals from flowers you pass (that then follow you and make it hard to see) and exiting the level at the end point. The flowers are grouped close together while the controls are so imprecise you can't easily collect all of them and it takes a while if you try to go back and collect some that you missed. I think my "collect everything" impulses really worked against me (I fairly quickly stopped trying to collect them all) and I would have enjoyed it somewhat more with even less to do (I think you may need to collect some to progress but I'm not sure how many). The game reminds me of de Blob that I also didn't like at all. Haven is also a bit similar and I also found that one frustrating, although eventually I found collecting stuff in that game to be fun (I haven't finished it and can't really recommended it other than the music, which is excellent). I highly recommend A Short Hike. There is also Calico (unfortunately fairly buggy but still one of my favorites; you can fly around at the end of the game).
