Description
Firewatch is a single-player first-person mystery set in the Wyoming wilderness.

The year is 1989. You are a man named Henry who has retreated from his messy life to work as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. Perched high atop a mountain, it’s your job to look for smoke and keep the wilderness safe. An especially hot, dry summer has everyone on edge. Your supervisor Delilah is available to you at all times over a small, handheld radio—your only contact with the world you've left behind. But when something strange draws you out of your lookout tower and into the forest, you’ll explore a wild and unknown environment, facing questions and making choices that can build or destroy the only meaningful relationship you have.

A Note: Firewatch is a video game about adults having adult conversations about adult things. If you plan on playing with a younger gamer, that might be good to know going in.
  • A stunningly beautiful wilderness environment that expands as you explore.
  • A tailor-made story: the choices you make shape the narrative and build relationships.
  • An edge-of-your-seat mystery.
  • Secrets and discoveries to be made over every hill.
  • Living, breathing characters brought to life by Cissy Jones (The Walking Dead: Season 1) and Rich Sommer (Mad Men)
  • A spectacular wilderness environment by Olly Moss (Illustrator) and Jane Ng (The Cave, Brutal Legend)
  • A thrilling story and script by Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin (The Walking Dead: Season 1, Poker Night at the Inventory)
  • A stirring original soundtrack by Chris Remo (Gone Home)
  • Fluid first-person animation by James Benson (Ori & The Blind Forest)
  • Gameplay scripting and design work by Patrick Ewing (Twitter) and Nels Anderson (Mark of the Ninja)
  • Programming by Will Armstrong (Bioshock II), Ben Burbank (Costume Quest 2, Space Base DF-9), and Paolo Surricchio (Deadpool, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare)

A Pretty Decent Walk

After looking through my library I finally decided to finish Firewatch this weekend. What drew my attention to Firewatch was the beauty of the wilderness. I was not dissapointed in this regard. Coupled with the music, the wilderness felt soothing and at times tense to walk around in. I was pleasantly surprised how much I loved the dialogue between the two main characters. Even though I loved walking through the wilderness I had hoped there was more to it than just that. The story of the game starts off intriguing but towards the end it fell abit flat. Overall I enjoyed the time I spent in Firewatch. Though parts of Firewatch could have been better, I would recommend giving it a playthrough.

It works. I suppose

Well that was a frustrating yet dull waste of 4 and a half hours. In what way was any of this low-res (ultra mode) linear cartoon an open world or simulaltion of anything? All the reviews lied to me. You walk around, a little area at a time, playing 'hunt the spot from which I'm allowed to climb the magic rock' in order to advance the story. Which also won't advance until you've found the plot device. You can't go anywhere else because there's a blade of grass in the way - or something, I stopped caring after the first hour. You can't even enjoy the sub-Skyrim views because you're constantly interrupted by some woman babbling about her love life - or something, I stopped listening after a couple of hours. The best thing about this visual novel is that it doesn't take long.

Short but engaging

Great story-based casual mystery game, lasting about as long as it takes to read a mystery novel. With the help of your supervisor, Delilah -- with whom you develop an increasingly close relationship as the game progresses, but whom you never meet in person -- you hike, climb, and sometimes fall into a plot that has both Henry and Delilah growing more and more worried about their choices and their futures. Aside from a couple of the usual red herrings one finds in mystery stories, the gist of the tale becomes clearer as you progress. Having played through the game only once, I can't speak to the value of replay. (With the mystery solved, I don't see much point in replay, for that matter.) You do wrestle with some matters of personal choice and dilmena, but in the end it does not seem to matter much. One factor that kept me intrigued as the game approached its climax was the thought that Henry would finally get to meet Delilah in person. In that regard the game might feel like a bit of a let-down. After all, the mystery is just the vehicle through which Henry and Delilah come to know each other and grow emotionmally connected -- and come to know themsleves a bit better as well. That is the true heart of the tale. But once the mystery is solved, our players exit the stage with a limp rather than a roar, although possibly a bit more humble and slightly wiser. Aside from that final-chapter fumble, it's a pleasant experience and well worth the sale price I paid.

Beautiful but flawed

Game is beautiful, plays very well for walking simulator. I do love this game and have 100% it on Steam and GOG. The biggest issue is the story and how it unfolds... Or doesn't unfold. Either way, the game is great but held back by the story. If it's onsale I'd reccomend it, takes a couple of hours to beat and keeps you engaged until the end.

Disenchantment

Poor players... Campo Santo couldn't create nothing more than a fiction. They've fooled every player with this repetitive walking here and there, with this very talented "story" and "suspense", with this fake decisions. It isn't worth your time at all. What a joke!
