Description
Firewatch is a single-player first-person mystery set in the Wyoming wilderness.

The year is 1989. You are a man named Henry who has retreated from his messy life to work as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. Perched high atop a mountain, it’s your job to look for smoke and keep the wilderness safe. An especially hot, dry summer has everyone on edge. Your supervisor Delilah is available to you at all times over a small, handheld radio—your only contact with the world you've left behind. But when something strange draws you out of your lookout tower and into the forest, you’ll explore a wild and unknown environment, facing questions and making choices that can build or destroy the only meaningful relationship you have.

A Note: Firewatch is a video game about adults having adult conversations about adult things. If you plan on playing with a younger gamer, that might be good to know going in.
  • A stunningly beautiful wilderness environment that expands as you explore.
  • A tailor-made story: the choices you make shape the narrative and build relationships.
  • An edge-of-your-seat mystery.
  • Secrets and discoveries to be made over every hill.
  • Living, breathing characters brought to life by Cissy Jones (The Walking Dead: Season 1) and Rich Sommer (Mad Men)
  • A spectacular wilderness environment by Olly Moss (Illustrator) and Jane Ng (The Cave, Brutal Legend)
  • A thrilling story and script by Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin (The Walking Dead: Season 1, Poker Night at the Inventory)
  • A stirring original soundtrack by Chris Remo (Gone Home)
  • Fluid first-person animation by James Benson (Ori & The Blind Forest)
  • Gameplay scripting and design work by Patrick Ewing (Twitter) and Nels Anderson (Mark of the Ninja)
  • Programming by Will Armstrong (Bioshock II), Ben Burbank (Costume Quest 2, Space Base DF-9), and Paolo Surricchio (Deadpool, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare)

Early reviews were overly complimentary

This game kept popping up everywhere I looked. Someone, somewhere was pushing it pretty heavily. It had great reviews, far better than the current review score, and a lot of talk about the amazing story. Unfortunately, about 30 minutes into the game I had built up an idea about what I thought was going on in the story and it turned out to be far more dull of an ending than that. I would put my crazy theory out there on this review, but honestly, the story is so thin that saying what I thought it was going to be reveals more than a potential buyer should know going in. I'll just say that if you've seen the movie Memento, that's kind of where I thought things were going. For a game with so much story, it was really thin on actual story. Maybe I didn't find enough conversation triggers or something like that, but by the end I was sitting there thinking "Oh, really, that's it? No more twists? No more surprises? It's really just this and that's all? Well... ok. Cool, I guess." On the up side, the voice acting was tremendous. Kudos to both characters. What little story there was, was painted extremely believably by these talented artists. Thanks for your great work and dedication on this.

A visual novel

I feel that this game should have other tags: visual novel and walking simulator. Definitely NOT adventure. Although it has great voice acting and lets you choose the dialogs it does not offer any other kind of interactivity. It is very immersive - even a map is a piece of paper held in your hands. I really missed the "game" part. The game basically makes you go from one place to another and talk through walkie talkie. Nothing happens there. And the story really let me down.

Ehhh....

At times this game really draws you in with a spooky mystery, but the end is very anticlimatic. The map and compass way of navigating the game is very frustrating at times as well. Worth a play if you get it on sale and you enjoy narrative driven games without much action.

Watch it on Youtube

Seriously, there is no actual game here. Choices are just dialogue, there is no actual choice, no actual gameplay. It's an interactive video with a bunch of time waste running here and there but all linear. That said the voice acting is really good and the atmosphere is well done. So if you're looking for a not game instead of watching a movie, sure. But make sure it's on deep sale because there's no replay here. It's a one and done if you even make it that far before you're bored or frustrated with the lack of anything to actually do or affect the story.

Short+ Disappointing unfinished ending.

The game had parts that made it seem very interesting and deep and made the player feel as if something really scary/crazy/interesting was happening or going to happen, but it never went anywhere at all. Without mentioning spoilers, I can honestly say that literally nothing important happens. You're just playing and some things happen that are not very interesting, and all the details you hoped would lead somewhere interesting are just left sitting there and never answered as to what was really going on. Then some other random and seemingly very unrelated details that you can't be expected to care about as the player when they suddenly show up, just appear and pretend they're some huge revelation, when they really just feel like they were glued into a hole in the end story with old dried movie theater chewing gum from under the seat. I don't know why they think this was okay to just build up something interesting and then essentially sideline it and sweep it all under a rug and then blame everything on some other factor who really didn't have any logical or illogical motivation to do things the way they happened. You as the player get the story like 1+2+3+4+5=(NOPE nothing here!)(What I really mean is)1+left=upside down???? You're just left sitting there like "WHAT? WHY? That's unfair to the story, the player, the character, and makes no sense!" It's feels like the developer or writer had a vision for some kind of vague low budget mystery/suspense movie but never really continued to illustrate and finish that idea, but then just took that totally unfinished idea and plopped it down and said "Hey lets make an entire video game out of this" and we're all just left like... what...?
