Great arcade Arena-Shooter

First things first — this is not your typical horde-shooter. This thng is more like a Quake 3 with a bunch of different ugly (in a good way) monsters. And please, first thing that you must do to properly enjoy this — go to the options menu and turn off salto (activated on a jumppads), slow-mo and hints. And resize the minimap to small. After that, turn the difficulty to 150% minimum (200 is better, but furst levels when your character is newbie is kinda assbusting) and enjoy a great, stylish, meaty slaughter in a grimdark industrial hell. One of the main mechanics (except perk system, that allows you to create a gun-wielding deathmachine of your style of choise) is an item control. Like in an Unreal Tournament or Quake you must sweep the map constantly for goodies and artefacts. Artefact is a bonus that sometimes spawns in a level and have a time-limit to pick up. This is your save-pointб but if you're late to pick it up — level failed. Not everyone likes that, but this thing makes you move fast and think about positioning. A little buggy (russian pirated version with patch for some reason is more stable), but nothing gamecrashing. This is a very unique shoot-em-up, with bizzare creatures, great arenas, argessive soundtrack and huge, loud guns. And to flavour it up there is a pack of different characters, perk system and cool abilities like backward time jump (a life saver!) and mind control. What else to wish in an arcade shooter? If the gameplay is what you seek in games first and foremost, this hits right in the sweet spot. Great fun.

No.

Randomly glitches, makes your character run through a wall or floor, and kills you. This requires you to replay the stage you've been working on from the very start all over again - until you die to a random, unprovoked glitch yet again. At the very least, a game needs to function. Bare minimum.

Horrendous game design

I'm skipping the bugs and falling through map. Let's say you get this game playable. The design is so bad they should pay you to get the game and play it. Monsters spawn right IN you non stop, there are levels where they just spawn flamer guys non stop that run with 100000mps and shoot from half the map away and you can't run away from them because they spawn more behind you while you run away. Not to mention the insanely bad weapon gameplay design. You get weapons in turns, and for the old weapons there isn't any ammo left so you're forced to play with the current weapon, which runs out of ammo instantly and you have to collect non stop while getting monsters spawned IN you. I haven't seen design this bad in 20 years of first person shooters. It isn't even worth the bandwith price if you were to be given the game for free to download. Save yourself the pain.

Good arena FPS for casual players!

In a nutshell this is just an arena fps with single RPG element - developing your hero's abilities. It aged well and still looks fine for me. Game physics and gameplay itself are not that fluid as in AAA-titles. So if you were into Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament series this game will be extremely sub-par for you. If you are casual player who wants to spend couple of hours and try out arena shooters - this would be fine. Great thing is that the game has extremely flexible difficulty setting - you can always spend stress-free time here, just enjoying the progress. The only annoying thing in this case will be the necessity to pick up artifacts in limited time. Concerning the rest - it's nice option to try what arena shooters are if you've never played them before and if you are also new to FPS. Good idea to get it at discount, since the game is not that long or you just find it's not your thing at all. If you already have been into AAA titles, this game is extremely disappointing due to being too generic in all aspects.

Ukrainian Quake 3 Arena

Pros; -Interesting enemy designs with their own unique attacks -Good variety of weapons -Upgrade Sistem that allows you to move faster, deal more damage and gives upgraded versions of your base weapons. -Single player campaign that takes you through the multiplayer maps like in Quake 3. -Artifacts that give you special powers and also can be upgraded. -Graphics look good enough for a game that came out in 2004. Cons; -Not much variety in level design, seems to follow mostly 'industrial' theme, an coasional 'space ship' level here and there and only 1 'medieval castle' themed map as the final level. -Not much variety in enemy designs, many are labeled as demons and zombies but if you removed those labels you would think they are all just aliens. Overall view; If you liked Quake 3 and are also a fan of GSC Game world, then you will like this game and own a piece of GSC's history. Specialy when this game uses some assets from theyr early S.T.A.L.K.E.R. builds. Sadly as of writting this review there are no multiplayer servers active, or if the server browser is working/updated at all.
