Only FPS Afficionados Need Apply?

From the same people who brought us S.T.A.L.K.E.R, FireStarter is a game in the same vein as Serious Sam, or Painkiller. You're in a large level, given a set of genre-typical weapons, and told to kill everything that moves. And that's pretty much it. The levels that I've encountered so far are rather bland, using a brown-grey color palette with Quake/Quake II-esque Gothic-Industrial designs, but they are vast and expansive, with multiple zones which open up to you as you kill more enemies. Gameplay is standard run-and-gun, with an interesting optional "Bullet Time" system that engages every time you get attacked. Added to the mix are special powers which you can activate in combat at will (fueled by the requisite energy bar), and passive perks which you can gain and level up. The first two main problems with this game are it's inconsistent difficulty level from level to level (or even from zone to zone), and it's "Artefact" system. Artefacts are spawned on the map in various locations on a set timer (about 45 seconds or so). Collect them and you gain a checkpoint save (which you can use only a limited amount of times, and only when you die). Fail to collect it in time, and you *automatically lose the level*. (!?) Seriously, who thought that was a good idea? The third main problem is that the game itself doesn't really hold up after very long without any meaningful plot or mission objectives. In contrast, games like UT99 had at least some semblance of a meaningful single-player campaign, even if you all you were really doing was just offline MP with bots. Painkiller had its interesting diversity of enemies and weapons to hold it up; Serious Sam had its unique humor. FireStarter has neither of these. I don't regret buying this game as I've had a decent amount of fun with it, and I'm an enthusiast for the genre with an interest in obscure/classic FPS games. If this sounds like you, FireStarter may be a good buy. For anyone else, I'd recommend waiting for a sale.

A Good Wave-Based FPS.

Firestarter plays like the "Serious Sam" and "Painkiller" series. PROS: + Fun, frenetic action. + 5 playable characters, each with unique skill sets. + Areas unlock in progression, giving you time to figure things out. + Modest hardware requirements. Any PC built after 2005 should be able to run Firestarter. + Windows version is playable on Linux via Wine, according to winehq.org. + A steal at $6 (USD). CONS: - No multiplayer as of this review (2015-08-07). - No Mac version, yet. - Environments aren't as diverse as those found in "Serious Sam: The Second Encounter".

Killing Floor

The Floor and Walls killed me (by glitches) more times than Monsters. This is not a joke. You can sometimes suddenly walk into textures and you can not move back. And then after few seconds you see the sad information "Game Over". So you must watch out on every your step. Second issue is about items: I don't know why, but I don't see my weapons and items (they are invisible) in my hand and also on the Floor. Only the colorful glow can tell me what type of item it is (health, armor, ammo). But the gameplay is not so bad. Something between Quake 3 and Serious Sam with additional RPG elements.

Just too buggy

I wanted to like this game. I could mention that somehow the camera movement with the mouse is awkward and makes it hard to tell which way you're looking. I could mention that the bullet time thing is annoying but the aforementioned awkwardness makes it a bad idea to turn it off since you need that extra time to reorient yourself. I could mention that the hints scroll too fast. I could mention a lot of things. But mostly, I think it's important to mention that most of my deaths have been a result of falling through the floor or getting stuck in the floor. If that doesn't bother you, go for it.

Very poor

Firestarter seemed to be a pretty decent shooter, even few gameplay videos I watched gave me an impression it's worth a try. But, oh boy, this game is so poor it gave me a headache. You can't change any video settings except brightness, despite all them bars and tabs in the options menu for all to see. The game has problems with booting up - more often then not, you will start up the .exe few times in a row before the game gets that you want it working. The game is also unstable and suffers from mouse sensitivity issues. Is the gameplay worth that hussle? Sadly not. The game may has some content in there, but I was burned out by the abysmal gameplay after 6 stages. Uninspired, random arenas (you will run back constantly through interconnected corridors) with terribly generic enemies, guns and randomly placed med- and armorpacks. The art direction is terrible, since every stage consists exclusively brown colors and all enemies are light brown, making them very difficult to see and aim at. And even if you get pass terrible cut-scenes and control issues (the camera rotates off-sight during these cut-scenes, so more often than not you will be running into wall or staring into floor when they end!), the gunplay isn't that exciting either. Thanks to poor sound assets and terrible kick, all weapons feel very weak (the initial saw doesn't even hurt enemies at all! It's a God damned prop) and dead enemies will fall in an uninspired manner. To make long story short: the game is unbelievably boring and stale. Just go replay Serious Sam.
