Did you ever want to reroute power to the shields, set phasers to stun,
or even eject the warp core? Well, now you can! In FTL, you experience the
atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a
dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with
multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down
your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape,
power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the
fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation
roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure
through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.
FTL's complex strategic gameplay allows you to give orders to your crew,
manage ship power distribution, and choose weapon targets in the heat of
battle. You will encounter unique alien lifeforms and technology. You can
upgrade your ship and unlock new ones with the help of six diverse alien
races. Be the Captain you want: hundreds of text based encounters will
force you to make tough decisions. In the randomized galaxy each
play-through will feature different enemies, events, and results to your
decisions. Each time you play another challenging session of FTL: Faster Than Light, it won't be quite the same.
Unlimited adventures in the vast depths of unpredictable space.
A new randomized galaxy to explore each time you start a new game.
Quick play sessions (from 5 to about 90 minutes) will allow you to add that spaceship commander feeling to any of your days.
This is one of the most interesting as well as nicest looking games I have played in recent memory. Very clever idea and a lot of hidden depth in the game play. However it is brutally difficult and if you are afraid to lose this is not for you.
One aspect of it that I did not care for is that some of the random events have fixed negative or positive outcomes depending on your choices. The negative ones can be bad enough to end the run all on their own so it becomes very tempting to just look up the possible outcomes just so you don't end up losing because of something out of your control. However this was not bad enough to even take off one star because the game as whole is just that good.
tt feels like you are really exploring the universe, and you are part of the crew. You want to do so much more with them and continue the journey, yet each journey will come to an end, when you face the boss.
FTL is a strategy game whereby you control a ship with its crew with a main goal, to survive the trials and tribulation throughout your journey to your homebase, and finally facing the final boss. If you die anywhere along the way (zero crew left or ship being destroyed), you lose and have to start all over.
I like how you can customised the ship to your favourite mod. You can build defense or offense style. You can use different type of attacks (drone, crew, missle, laser, hull).
Is just so much fun, esp after you watched Star Trek or Star Wars.
This game seems unfairly difficult at times, and the first time players should probably just play on easy mode until they grasp most of the game mechanics and tactics.
But it is very rewarding to actually beat it once you get your perfect setup and a lot of luck in one playthrough.
It is extremely RNG based, and all the events and systems are randomly generated each time you start a new game. Some playthroughs you might not even make it past sector 3, and some you'll be able to reach the final sector only to be brutally reminded that the flagship is no pushover.
Since the game randomizes everything, no playthrough is the same, and it makes the game have lots of replay value. and with the addition of "Advanced content" you get access to huge numbers of weapons, drones turrets and what not. And another great thing, it works natively on linux (I used Ubuntu 16.04 at the time of writting the review) with no issues at all (at least none I've noticed).
Someone recommended the huge mod called "Captain's edition" which adds even more randomness, weapons and tactics into play, so after you've learned the basics you could check it out.
Some people hate the mod for whatever reason, but I liked it, it added content so I don't get how could it be bad.
I give this game a 5 star rating because of the replay value and a great content.
