A tropical paradise seethes with hidden evil in Far Cry, a cunningly detailed action shooter that pushed the boundaries of combat to shocking new levels.Freelance mariner Jack Carver is cursing the day he ever came to this island. A week ago, a brash female reporter named Valerie had offered him an incredible sum of cash to take her to this unspoiled paradise. Shortly after docking, however, Jack's boat was greeted by artillery fire from a mysterious militia group swarming about the island.
With his boat destroyed, his money gone, and the gorgeous Valerie suddenly missing, Jack now finds himself facing an army of mercenaries amidst the wilds of the island, with nothing but a gun and his wits to survive. But the further he pushes into the lush jungle canopy, the stranger things become.
Jack encounters an insider within the militia group who reveals the horrific details of the mercenaries' true intentions. He presents Jack with an unsettling choice: battle the deadliest mercenaries, or condemn the human race to a maniac's insidious agenda.
A unique sandbox FPS that allows you to complete your objectives in several different ways
Challenging A.I. that dynamically responds to your actions
Beautiful graphics, even by today’s standards, that can be upgraded even further by fan-made content
A good old game, but I want to share a tip with gamers who are frustrated by the AI.
If you hide in the bushes and shoot the enemies from there, they won't detect you, unless they are standing like right next to you. I beat the game by using this tactic.
This won't work inside buildings, so you need to navigate slowly and carefully and have that trigger finger ready.
Sill one of the best FPS with great graphics. Runs perfect on Windows 10 in 4k with Xbox controller (Xpadder)! At its time it had the best graphics and was ahead of all games. Far Cry 1 is way better then the othe Far Cry games. The gameplay is also more challenging than newer games. You fall asleep playing the new Far Cry games because it's so easy. Simply a great game and one of my favorite games.
Since Far Cry is well-known, no point to going into great detail. CryTek can render vast outdoor areas that impress, there’s a thought-out roster of weapons coupled with good gunplay, movement feels alright except for low stamina, and the AI is passable. All the basics are covered and they work well for the most part.
I think much of the dislike comes from the clash of two different play styles. The game releases the player in the middle of the jungle, giving free reign to reach your objectives as you see fit. Dare going in guns blazing, or do some flanking and take out patrols one by one with the MP5SD? Can do both and more. As in Crysis 2007 (this game was a prototype for), these levels are never truly open but have sufficient freedom of maneuver to stimulate the player’s creativity and problem-solving skills. Perhaps Linear Lite Sandbox would be the proper term.
Then the tone of the game shifts abruptly and dramatically once mutants are introduced to the story. Suddenly, it's a corridor FPS with survival horror atmosphere and level design. Supplies are getting scarcer, and even the most basic of mutants can run up and kill you in one of two swipes despite full body armor and everything. And there’s lots of them and that’s only the baby variety too!
When judged on their own merit, both components are at least acceptable. But in the same game, the same campaign? There’s glue holding it together but the bond is weak.
Far Cry has other issues which are objectively a problem. Story and the voice acting are poor, vehicle physics are flaky, there are numerous instances of questionable level design and spiteful enemy placement, and rocket spam is just plain annoying.
And this game is hard even on the lowest difficulty. Entirely reliant on health pickups, lowly grunts can take you out in seconds, and the going only gets tougher (a lot!) with mutants around. And without a little custom script you only get checkpoints.
Really? Who took this game seriously? It was quite obviously very tongue-in-cheek. Now Far Cry 2, that was VERY serious. This game? Not so much.
That being said, this game is great. A lot of people said it dropped off around the halfway point, but I still thought it was great fun. Be warned, the difficulty curve is insane.
There are already many reviews praising the game's graphics, when I play a game, I don't care if it has the best graphics in the world, although it helps a bit sometimes, but the gameplay in this game is so infuriating and so random that even the prettiest of the graphics won't have a redeeming factor.
The story is pretty silly, the voices are nothing short of laughable and a cardboard box has more personality than the characters of this game. The game starts out being a bit interesting enough and the action is a bit hectic sometimes... if you're not dealing with snipers. Seriously, you'll want to punch a baby seal if you're still playing the game after you've dealt with a tower of snipers.
The game maintains to be decent enough as you progress and it may actually start to grow on you, until you reach certain point where you no longer have to fight humans... seriously, the new enemies you'll encounter are some of the cheapest and most infuriating of any game.
I've never actually finished this game, but I just wanted the pain to stop. I actually bought this game in retail disc and I literally threw it to the garbage and I never looked back.
Avoid at all costs, you'll never be able to remove this game from your GOG library. Ever.
