A tropical paradise seethes with hidden evil in Far Cry, a cunningly detailed action shooter that pushed the boundaries of combat to shocking new levels.Freelance mariner Jack Carver is cursing the day he ever came to this island. A week ago, a brash female reporter named Valerie had offered him an incredible sum of cash to take her to this unspoiled paradise. Shortly after docking, however, Jack's boat was greeted by artillery fire from a mysterious militia group swarming about the island.
With his boat destroyed, his money gone, and the gorgeous Valerie suddenly missing, Jack now finds himself facing an army of mercenaries amidst the wilds of the island, with nothing but a gun and his wits to survive. But the further he pushes into the lush jungle canopy, the stranger things become.
Jack encounters an insider within the militia group who reveals the horrific details of the mercenaries' true intentions. He presents Jack with an unsettling choice: battle the deadliest mercenaries, or condemn the human race to a maniac's insidious agenda.
A unique sandbox FPS that allows you to complete your objectives in several different ways
Challenging A.I. that dynamically responds to your actions
Beautiful graphics, even by today’s standards, that can be upgraded even further by fan-made content
i remember when i played far cry 1 as a teen the graphics water is fantastic but after buying and playing this game it was like a nightmare
because it very very hard such as
-the movement speed in this game is very slow
-you can sprint in this game but short time because the stamina runs out fast
-a monster in this game can kill the player one or two times and also the armor will run out now if the monster attack with a one time
so i wanna recommended it to the hardcore players but if you wanna looking for relax i don't recommend this game
Farcry has to be one of the best wide range games of its time. Well, other than Outcast.
I play through the games, and yes the story is not the best, but still fun to play. One thing I really love about this game is the level editor, load of fun.
The graphics are very well done, so is the game play.
I had loads of fun with this game. I suggest anyone who has not played this game to give it a try, you won't be disappointed... and if you are... then there are a lot more choices of games on GOG.
:)
Far Cry wasn't the first game to give wide open expanses and freedom, and it wasn't the first to look good. But it was the first to do both at the same time.
Far Cry marks the beginning of a new era graphically. It started out as a tech demo for the Cry engine ultimately to be used in Crysis. To be honest, I've always liked it better than Crysis. Far Cry puts you on a tropical island and lets you figure out your optimum way through to the other side. Sometimes it's loud. Sometimes stealthy. Sometimes you just commandeer a boat and sail around the bad guys.
About halfway through the game, the difficulty ramps up significantly as you begin to take on mutants as well as human enemies. The game doesn't take itself too seriously. It's one of the few shooters that I've played through more than once.
Far Cry is average on many layers; story, main characters, enemy design, weapon choices, level design, etc.
What is good about it is the look of the levels however, the CryEngine still holds up (to some extent) and it's definitely pretty to look at. There's some interestings twists and turns in the story that I actually didn't expect but other than that it's a pretty OK story for an FPS.
The difficulty is quite hard and I think it's because it's partly bugged as the enemies can see you on a waaay to long distance.
In conclusion; I'd say the game is worth a playthrough but that's about it. There's nothing really special about it and it's before Ubisoft really got their formula for the Far Cry games; heck it's not even developed by Ubisoft themselves but by CryTek.
I haven't even tried this damn game yet. Want to know why? It doesn't work. Every time I've tried to launch it, it comes up with the same thing...
A black 1024x768 window, regardless of your resolution or fullscreen setting, which is always on top

A "Critical Exception" error message behind said black window

Despite all my attempts and all my searches, I still can't get it to work. I've tried the direct EXE and the GOG launcher, I've tried all the compatibility modes, I've even tried turning down lighting as some have said fixes the issue.
For now, I give up. I can't find the damn solution, I've tried everything and yet nothing works. Even Fallout 3 worked at one point for me, but this just can't be done.
Buyer beware, this game might not even launch properly.
