Somehow, It Just Works! With Mods!

The thing about Fallout 3 is that you don't have to like it, but doggone you have to respect it. It's innovative. Say what you want, Bethesda is not afraid to do something new. This game: built in an engine for swords and magic. They added gun combat. Based on the West Coast, they brought it to DC. Isometric, to fully 3D and First Person. This is the third time I've bought a copy of Fallout 3. First time I bought it alongside New Vegas for 360, and both GOTYs cost me around 20 bucks. Easily some of the best money I've spent in gaming: each took me around 100 hours for a single playthrough. I also bought it on the "other" digital retailer that we all know and love. Now, to be fair they never make any promises that the games they sell will work. If you really expect them to quality check everything, go look up Gabe's net worth and decide for yourself whether you think they're concerned with quality or quantity. It's fine. The vast majority are fine. So the GOG version of Fallout 3, then. I can't explain how happy it makes me to be able to play this game again, and really enjoy it. And not just play it, but MOD the piss out of it. I've probably put 20 hours into a mod-test run since I bought this game, and it HAS NOT CRASHED ONCE. I can't believe I get to write that, about Fallout 3 on PC, in 2018. Whatever sorcery you guys are doing, you should probably stop. You guys are so good that Bethesda will start to purposefully make shite games and go "Ehh, the GOG guys will fix it." But really, this game is an utter gem, and easily as good as FNV. Honestly. Go look at Metacritic for this before you jump to the conclusion that FNV is the only "real" Fallout game. That was a bug-infested mess for damn near everyone who played it on launch. And you know what? I love them both- they're both amazing games, and they each do some unique things. But this game has what the other Fallouts lack (imo): atmosphere. This is up there with STALKER in making you feel cold and alone.

It works!

Unlike the *other* version of Fallout 3, this works right away. If Bethesda doesn't feel like fixing it, leave it to GOG!

[SOLVED] Great game when not crushing :)

Ok, for all who are suffering from the "Windows 10 issue" (crash on attempt to create a new game) - watch youtube video v=kJDF3N-7zhI - apply fix #4 - custom d3d9.dll (I actually applied all of them but then reverted all but #4 and it still works) and yes, this is sad Bethesda is still earning money on this game but "tech-support" web page on their site suggests to disconnect second monitor, run as administrator, set compatibility mode and similar not working bullshit...

The game that brought Fallout back

I watched my dad play through "Fallout 3" years ago and finally got around playing it myself, this time with DLC. Bethesda took a classic RPG series and were able to integrate it with their own design. I like those games, but in terms of gameplay, "Fallout 3" is a massive improvement. Reducing the RNG and having actual shooting is simply more enjoyable and doesn't feel like you are always playing with a bad DM. The action can't stand on its own, guns hardly have any punch to them, but it's perfectly serviceable for the RPG mechanics. They are simplified, but still plenty of fun. The perks can be an uneven collection though. The atmosphere is what really sells FO3. Roaming the Capital Wasteland is wonderfully unpleasant, even moreso due to the closed-in design. The issue with it is that it gets exhausting having to carry on through the subway just because you want to reach the other side of a rubble. It doesn't take away from the riveting immersion still, enhanced also by Inon Zur's subtle musical cues or the 20th century music that became an icon of the franchise with this game. Graphically, the game falters, but is saved entirely by its great art direction. The main story starts off well, but devolves into nonsensical garbage by the end. It's not good. But don't let it dissuade you from the fantastic side content. There is much to discover in the Capital Wasteland, whether it is marked on your Pip-Boy or not. I'll go over the DLCs quickly. "Operation Anchorage" takes the worst. It's at least entertaining somewhat. "The Pitt" is good - if there is one DLC you want to play, it's that. "Broken Steel" betters the main game and has great side quests, but it's main narrative is poor. "Point Lookout" is worth checking out if you are interested. "Mothership Zeta" is a mixed bag, try it out for yourself. Great setpieces, but it's very linear. Overall - great game. Highly recommend it to fans of post-apocalyptic media. And Fallout fans should at least give it a shot.
