After originally downloading Fallout 3 from Steam and spending over a week trying to get it to work I gave up and deleted it and asked for a refund. I mentioned this on the LIZZ YouTube / Twitch site and she told me I should try the GOG version as it seemed to her and her followers to be a better version. She was spot on...I downloaded the game and followed the simple instructions to update my laptop system and the game started first time. I am not a hardcore gamer and there are only a few games I have via Steam, but they will be cancelled and I will move over to GOG . Again thanks for making my gaming experience easy.
Ok, for all who are suffering from the "Windows 10 issue" (crash on attempt to create a new game)
- watch youtube video v=kJDF3N-7zhI
- apply fix #4 - custom d3d9.dll (I actually applied all of them but then reverted all but #4 and it still works)
and yes, this is sad Bethesda is still earning money on this game but "tech-support" web page on their site suggests to disconnect second monitor, run as administrator, set compatibility mode and similar not working bullshit...
Despite I consider New Vegas as the best, Fallout 3 is addictive and you can spend lots of hours exploring the wasteland and living your own story. I gave 4 stars due to some imprevisive closures during gameplay, and we can't forget the bugs despite these don't ruin the experience.
I had heard that the GOG version worked better than the Steam version but that is clearly not the case. The game crashes upon the beginning of a new game, so it is being sold in a broken state like the Steam version. So you have to go through a whole bunch of Youtube tutorials and technical junk to even START THE GAME. Very disappointing that they are allowed to sell a game in this poorly optimized state.
Also, no controllers work with it off the bat so you have to install more crap to get that working unless you want MnK. Once you get all that done, you still have to deal with the frequent crashes which is just the game in it's natural state unfortunately. It's just not worth it, and it's a shame because it is a great game underneath all of that. Oh well...
I do have mixed feelings towards Fallout 3, for multiple reasons; I find it quite repetitive, with a lot of time spent crawling through dozens of samey-looking dilapidated ruins (damn DC tunnels...); it often feels like it’s trying too hard to mimic the vibe of the OG Fallout games, nailing it only on occasion; it’s janky in many regards, notably when it comes to the combat - although it’s better than previous FO and Bethesda titles, which is not saying much; and while it’s not the devs’ buggiest, it has enough technical issues to make you wonder if it was coded by orangutans.
Of the multiple Bethesda games I’ve played so far, it’s probably my least favorite: it doesn’t have Oblivion’s high-quality quests, or Morrowind’s sense of wonder, or Skyrim’s satisfying gameplay loop… But still, it’s a very good experience.
The decision to essentially turn the franchise into a post-apocalyptic version of The Elder Scrolls was a good one, and for all its awkwardness this game has more than enough satisfying elements to keep you hooked. Yes, the gunplay isn’t very good, but pulverizing people in VATS never gets old. Yes, a lot of “dungeons” are here as padding, but much of the open world retains a great sense of wonder and exploration. And yes, the writing isn’t the best in the FO series, but the quests, characters and locations are quirky enough to remain intriguing.
In fact, the atmosphere rules: as a proud relic of the “dirty toilet filter” era of gaming (remember when every realistic game had to be covered in gray, brown, teal, or yellow?), FO3 does a stellar job of immersing you in the bizarre, decayed uchronian world that is the trademark of the series. In the end, it is a flawed title and there are better alternatives to it out there, but it’s better than the sum of its parts and has its fans for good reasons. It’s a game of vibes, a game that for all its faults succeeds at putting you in the shoes of a badass wasteland explorer. It’s worth at least a playthrough.
