Expeditions: Viking

Thirty hours of play behind. Good mix of baldur gates, conquistadors and micromanagement. But despite this, the game has its own unusual and interesting solutions. Beatifulul game, short story (i assumed there would be other islands besides Britain). Waiting for new game and good luck to developers.

Having just completed 100% of the game in 2 playthroughs within 120 hours of gameplay, I can honestly recommend this - despite rough production edges - to anybody liking good, challenging and story-driven "old-school" RPG games with actual consequences of ingame choices. + Excellent Viking atmosphere through music and world detail. + Simple but well made "rise to power" story with moral ambiguity. + Great combat on par with XKOM series. + Rich character build choices: ++ Stats do matter in dialogues, be who you want to be and role-play as you see fit. You won't be able to get it all in one go. ++ Customizable squads thanks to plethora of skill choices makes combat fun till the end. - Developer studio likely ran out of budget/time during production, lots of elements feel unifished or lack polish of an AAA game: -- Weird controls, not always responsive world interactions. -- Poor camera controls -- Minimum voice-overs -- Modern font (!?) -- Occasional bug, fixable through re-load. -- Character visual creation lacks detail, but doesn't matter in end as there's no zoom during dialogues. -- Funny movement animations.

No voice - prepare to read. Immersive storyline with interesting characters and a great "viking" feel to it. Interesting strategy but the combat in particular lacks depth and gets repetetive. Solid audio and graphics. Overall one of the better indie crps but still an indie title. If you want something to sink some hours into and are not averse to reading i would recommend it.

You would never expect a game this good to fly this below the radar. It is classic cRPG with mechanics similar to 90s hits like Baldur's Gate or Fallout. System is actually updated a lot and very polished so playing is comfortable for a new players as well. Story is similarly brilliant, devs took great pains to add historical authenticity in material but also in cognitive and cultural aspects of the lore. Looks beautiful as well. After maybe Original Sin 2 and Pillars of Eternity 2 the best new classic-style cRPG and that says a lot especially coming from someone who played all of the new classic-style cRPGs.

In its current state, this genuinely isn't fit for release. Riddled with so many bugs and problems, which are tiresome to overcome when in the meantime, there's also crashes and battle sequences that lock up the game when the AI moves don't complete their move. In addition, it's horribly optimised, meaning there's movement lag on even a decent PC and as the loading times between each screen, I swear I spent more time staring at the spinning shield loading screen, than actually playing the game. Seriously, wait for this game to be properly tested, patched, and finished before buying. I personally think this should be listed on GOG as "In Development", because in its current release state, that's what it is.
