As the leader of the expedition, you will face difficult decisions about the use of your troops and your resources, as well as how to engage with the factions of the savage New World. Will you defy history and be a diplomatic envoy of peace? Or will you be a ruthless conqueror determined to lay all of the Aztec Empire at your feet?

Expeditions: Conquistador is a tactical roleplaying game with a touch of strategic resource management and a pinch of choose-your-own-adventure. Conquistador is set in a rarely visited part of history which is rife with mystery, political intrigue, and good old-fashioned violence.

  • Exotic historical setting with far-reaching ethical implications - balance your relations with the natives against the wishes of your expedition members.
  • Intuitive and flexible turn-based combat system with highly varied and detailed battlefields that will keep you on your toes.
  • Manage the morale, rations, and resources of your expedition as you overcome the dangers of the Aztec territories.

Great game that captivates you

I heard about this game from a GOG friend and I was thought it was a waist of time, but I normally try to find out if what my friend says is good. I so the information about this game and bought it (took a chance). This game is really good, It is long between the good gameplay games, the good old RPG. Like Pool of Radiance and Champions of Krynn plus many more of the good old games. You start in a island in old America in the 1500, where all you goods are confiscated and you need to prove yourself. The battles are nearly the same but only with 6 men/woman. I thought it was a bad idea first, but now I think it is really special to find away to get 6 of the group fighting together and how to find the best combination of your team. The way you explore is fun and it its one more move, just one more. You move around from place to place on road (fast move) or other terrain and each is special in defence and hunting or patrolling. Normally the AI is not good in many of the new games, but here you can change settings the way you want. Most of us gamers hate to play games where the AI cheats, but in this game you can set the AI to not make mistakes (then your team needs to be better or you need to be better in tactics) and that it without the AI gets better attack or defends (you can set that to if you want). I like to play the game as everyone is the same and get a challenge instead of a AI cheater. Enjoy the game and I hope I kept all the spoilers out of the Review.

Good idea lost out to poor combat design

OK game for a while but it quickly ramps up the odds against your party. Allowing the player to only bring 6 soldiers (one of whom has to be a medic so as to prevent all the poisonings - so, really, only five soldiers) while the enemy constantly has anywhere from 8 to 12 is unrealistic - why would the other members of the party sit on the sidelines and watch their comrades get killed? The exploration and supply management part of the game is done well and was probably my favorite part of the game...if only the combat had been better balanced.

A real surprise!

Got into this game without really knowing anything about it (got it free with a GOG purchase) and i have to say it really surprised me by how much i enjoyed the setting and story elements. In terms of mechanics its basically Heroes of Might and Magic mixed with 'light' RPG, combat and story elements similar to the Shadowrun series and set, intriguingly, during the Spanish exploration of the Americas. You are a Spanish noble with a small (up to 16) party of adventurers trying to make your fortune in the new world. + Two large maps to explore - Hispaniola and Mexico complete with a very interesting camp management system where you need to assign people to various tasks in order to survive. + Nice RPG elements built into the story choices which do affect your decisions. This even extends to your party members including what class they are, their background story and even their traits. Want a group of violently racist, fanatical Christian zealots? Can do! :) + Combat is fairly light but is similar to the turn-based and skill-based format seen in Shadowrun (or XCOM by a stretch). Can be quite challenging at times, but very flavorful. + The story itself is historically correct and detailed, and takes place in a historical period which is rarely seen in games of this type, especially as an RPG. That said, it does allow for fantasy elements to be present as well (the Aztec deities are actually present for example), which is quite nice. The story as well is determined by you and your decisions which allows for some open-ended playing. - As mentioned before, i really wish the combat was a bit deeper and could have been refined a bit more... - Still a fairly short game all in all, took me about 13 hours to casually complete and i was left really wanting more! - The 'complete' end game condition is tough to meet and would involve a fair amount of grinding. That said, overall the 'normal' ending was satisfying enough imho. So all in all a great buy and a solid thumbs up from me - looking forward to the next title in this series, apparently Vikings! :o

Entertaining story

Just started playing this for a few hours. The story-telling is great, and all the little events and unexpected surprises are very entertaining. I am not sure if it is historically believable that I can create an all female native friendly conquistator troop to explore the jungle, but if you can overlook that this is not a real historic game, it is quite fun. Graphics are nothing special, but all I wanted is run the game in my labtop, so its fine.

Excellent title

Even if it is not without flaws: I havent had so much fun with a game since a long time! I dont even notice that it is supposed to be "indie". Its a very original and clever strategy/Rpg-Hybrid: Highly recommended!
