Description
Evoland 2 is the spiritual successor to the original Evoland with its graphics style changing as you travel through time, and it’s gameplay evolving as you move along the storyline. It is also a much bigger game and a classic RPG at heart, with a complex scenario based on time travel, dozens of characters with their own backgrounds and ambitions, and vastly different gameplay styles that are linked to the story and the player’s actions.

Full of humor and references to classic games, Evoland 2 will bring a truly epic and extraordinary adventure, unlike anything you’ve ever played before!
  • A true RPG with a wide and rich world
  • A tribute to the video games history, with its graphics evolving through the player's progression
  • Different gameplays (including shoot'em up, beat'em all, platforming, tactical, versus fighting and many more!)
  • Numerous references to geek culture
  • The intriguing scenario based on time travel

Starts out so strong, then falls apart.

In a nutshell, this game involves playing it in many different ways such as action RPG, shoot-em up style, platforming, and various other ways. The gameplay constantly changing is a very unique idea and really keeps the game from getting stale. Unfortunately, the further you get into the game, the more fake difficulty you encounter. You can level up to increase your stats, but the level ups often only boost a single stat by about 2 points. Furthermore, many areas have enemies or hazards that can either one-shot you (meaning your HP/Defense mean nothing), or combo you in a way pro-gamers can only dream about. Later bosses & areas are especially bad for this, ESPECIALLY the bosses that aren't fought in the usual real-time action-rpg method. You'll often find yourself later in the game trying to figure out where you are supposed to go or how to get there, which isn't helped by the slow movement speed of the character. When the gameplay style flips, controls are never explained (Not everyone has played tons of games to know right away what to do). The near-useless level ups artificially make the game harder because you can't get your stats up much even if you grind for hours (there is equipment, but it only helps a bit), and overall many things are just tedious; later on you'll often have to go back and forth between multiple locations just to advance the story and get to the next area. I thought I'd like this and I did for quite a while, but the game would have been better off keeping the more irritating mechanics out and making the game nice & easy. It can be fun, and the music is great (especially the boss theme), but I shouldn't have to push aside mountains of junk design choices just to have bits of fun every now and then.

a good game with unstable requirements

i will start with the requirements first. the early 2d parts of the game works perfectly on an amd a4 5000 with radeon hd 8330 but, the 3d parts of the game does not work perfectly even on the much stronger i7-4700mq and gtx 770m. what you need to run it depends heavily on what era you are in. present and previous eras requires less, while the future requires more. the hardware mentioned is hardware i have. then it is the gameplay. most puzzles is just click on a random spot. there is some real puzzles however, like the pipe puzzle and the light puzzle and the color puzzle. it is not perfect however: you can only store 9999 gold. you can not choose where to save. the game`s memory management is bad. it reloads all assets each time you die and you die a lot. you have unlimited lives however. certain gameplay elements only appears once.

A flat out disappointment. Don't get it

It may be a neat idea to amalgamate a variety of RPG styles throughout video game history, I don't think Evoland2 [EV] pulls it off. The nature of the game leaves it open to two main flaws which in my opinion are not well handled. 1)Jack of all trades master of none: [EV]'s selling point was an adventure though RPG gaming styles the sheer number of which are to be commended; unfortunately, none of them are done very well. Each era looks and plays like a cheap knock off. It is difficult to do precise movements which makes even basic jumping puzzles loathsome. Characters move at a snails pace. Hit boxes are iffy which make the ARPG elements of EV frustrating. The inventory system is overly simplistic, meaning there is no real equipment optimization at all for yourself or your party members. The natural consequence of the bare bones inventory system is that there is barely an in game economy to speak of. There is gold all over the place, there is just nothing to spend it on. One of the more unfortunate features of the game is that you have limited access to your party members which act more as spells than playable characters. Your party members are unironic unidimensional plot devices; which brings me to the second flaw. 2)Non-immersive story: The game never misses an opportunity discuss its every changing nostalgic RPG game play instead of letting the features stand on their own: EV story suffers from not taking itself seriously. Your own character barely speaks. Some games will reveal the main character's personality through a back story or place emphasis on the meaning of his actions --Not in EV. The story is revealed chiefly by bland in game events and the vapid dialogue of your party members. Surprisingly, EV will attempt to handle topics like meaning of true friendship and the obliteration of a people with an aloof attitude and numerous 4th wall breaks. It is impossible to get into the story when the characters themselves act as if their world is a joke.

Good but for me not good as Evoland 1

Evoland 1 was a great game. It traces the history of video games for a few hours. It was just a bit short. Evoland 2 is otherwise very long, too long ... it is impossible not to get bored because the feature of the game is the change of gameplay, which is very rare in the second game. The story and quests are a little trivial ... and some things remain the same for the entire game (dialogues for example). The music is always the same for the entire game ... The rating is 3.5. You can play with it, it's cute ... but all in all, the first was much more original. italiano: Evoland 1 era un ottimo gioco.

Glitches and Tutorials

The game is meant to play as if it is a reference to all the old games, which I love. But it plays like a never-ending stream of tutorials, and once you learn something - it is gone, never to be seen again. And, since that is the case, the mechanics never get to develop (also, if you are waiting for the "twist" that people praise - it happens after 5-7 hours, and it is not worth it). But that still could have been a solid 3-star game. I give 1 star for glitches. There is a known from 2015 glitch with tomatls in Sylph forest preventing a player from getting a chest that is not fixed in this version in 2024. Also, the card minigame sometimes just doesn't show the cards (an empty field is seen). All in all, in the race to make as many games as possible, the quality of each game has been forgotten =/
