Inspired by a wide variety of the most popular action RPGs and JRPGs, Evoland will take you from monochrome to full 3D graphics and from active time battles to real time boss fights, all with plenty of humor, and many references to legendary titles scattered along the game.

  • Play through the history of action-adventure video games.
  • Unlock many evolutions as you progress through the game, from old school 2D action/adventures to active time battles and full 3D action.
  • Have tons fun with the dungeons, puzzles, a heap of secrets to uncover, and dozens of achievements and stars to collect.

Good but short

I enjoyed the game and the evolution mechanic meant that it didn't feel repetitive or stale, the game play was fun and it bought back a nice bit of nostalgia. I did find that when I got some of the evolution upgrades (for want of a better word), they didn't carry across to all areas like I thought they would. I also feel that the game was a bit short. Each part could have been expanded before that next upgrade and the story could have been longer and more complex. All in all however, i enjoyed the game and think its worth the $10

Retro

A great little throwback with clunky controls in some places. Overall an interesting game that honors many old titles with a layout I found similar to DLC quest.

Loved every second

Well, most every second. It's a game that takes a bit of patience and a love for retro games. It's got all the trappings of a retro game, including the relatively easy puzzles and the ultimate need to backtrack if you want to 100% the game. But fortunately not if you just want to complete the story. It took me somewhere between 3 and 4 hours to beat and in that time, the only time I wanted to put it down was during the final boss when I just didn't pay enough attention to detail. There are one or two references (including one to a popular scene in a certain "legendary" RPG) that had me jaw-dropped going "you're kidding, right?" but for the most part, it was an enjoyable game with great jokes through and through. For me, it doesn't have much replay value but that's alright, as the journey was worth it. All in all, I'd definitely recommend it.

Charming and Fun

This game pays homage to the adventure / rpg traditions of gaming. It takes the player through original game boy, nes, 16 bit, 32 bit, and "HD" eras of gaming. Gameplay evolves depending on what period you are playing. When playing in a 16 bit field, you'll find monsters are few, but tough. While fighting on an HD field with ambient light, you'll find a Shining Force Neo stream of enemies. The game does not take itself seriously and uses most of the tropes from adventure / rpg tradition (running around town asking people for an item that was in front of your face all the time, the "wizard" character learning magic by "reading books from my uncle's library", etc). I do understand some of the negative reviews. The game doesn't add any new innovative mechanics. The game doesn't break any ground in storytelling. It doesn't mean to. It's meant to honor and parody at the same time the games of old. And with characters like Clink and Kaeris using Cloud's Sword to defeat the evil Zephyros from destroying the the world from his home base - the Mana Tree - it does what it sets out to do spectacularly.

Really fun

This game was pure cracked-out addiction from moment one to the last battle. A fun lively romp through mostly nintendo rpgs with heavy nods to other styles, I would say that If you want the satisfaction of finishing a good RPG in about four days (you could do it in a one 8-12 hour session I suppose) then try this out. If you are an old skool gamer like me this will bring back a lot of memories, and for everyone in general I think it will crispy delineate the development of game graphics in a fun and rewarding way. Everything has to be unlocked, even the plot, inventory, minimap etc. Its very creatively implemented and could have been taken much further and played much longer (hence only four stars from me). Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing this.
