Evoland is a game and a story. The story of action adventure gaming as seen in many popular JRPGs and action RPGs, starting from the very beginning, when a few pixels were enough to make us dream for hours. You will discover a bit of video game history and very fun gameplay, covering 20 years of adventure gaming history.

Inspired by a wide variety of the most popular action RPGs and JRPGs, Evoland will take you from monochrome to full 3D graphics and from active time battles to real time boss fights, all with plenty of humor, and many references to legendary titles scattered along the game.

  • Play through the history of action-adventure video games.
  • Unlock many evolutions as you progress through the game, from old school 2D action/adventures to active time battles and full 3D action.
  • Have tons fun with the dungeons, puzzles, a heap of secrets to uncover, and dozens of achievements and stars to collect.

Short and Sweet

I don't usually review games, but I loved this one. This was the most fun I've had with a game in quite a while. Very tongue-in-cheek type humor. Pokes fun at the archetypes of the RPG genre I grew up with. On the negative side, the turn-based battle system gets to be a bit of a pain. Between the music, the frequency of battles, and the lack of any real substance in that aspect of the game, I found that was the low point in this one. I will be recommending this game to friends of mine, and I hope you enjoy it as well. I would buy the next game these devs put out - hopefully the next will be a bit longer! I finished 94.7% of the game in around 4.5 hours tonight.

Most basic RPG (probably ever)

All in all an enjoyable game. But the first 30 minutes made me mad as hell. before you get the lifebar you die the instant a monster touches you. The whole concepts of the evolution being in chests also seems way off. Why can't the player buy new features as the player playing the main character? You would buy enemies and most other things, because let's face it, an rpg without enemies is plain boring. Also, that would be a completely different experienence than just forcing the player to evolve the game. Plus I wonder why the hell this game needs to be a flash powerd game and not at least java powered. This kind of game should not require 1.7 GHz CPU or 1GB ram. All in all: Good Idea, poorly realized, yet fun to play, even if it's jsut for a short episode of nostalgia.

Short and a bit lacking

But not bad. Just not worth it. It's a wonderful idea, and the content is pretty cool, but there isn't enough of the good things, or they are just not relevant (e.g. Card minigame, invetnory...) and some of the not so good things last too long, compared to the good ones at least. All in all, if someone already bought it, play their copy, or get it on discount. As it is it's not worth the money imo.

Clever concept, sloppy execution

I love the idea of Evoland, and after finishing the game I can say that it has a lot of charm to it. And while it borrows elements from and plays homage to The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Diablo, it feels really stiff and awkward doing so, and really just makes me wish that I was playing those games instead.

Starts out Great, gets old Fast

When I played the original short game, I fell in love with it. I was very weary at first upon hearing someone was making a bigger and expanded version, though. Partly cause I was afraid they would add unnecessary things which would bump up the system requirements, but also because I had the feeling they would not remain true to the charm of the original. Turns out my feelings were well founded, as the final product not only comes off as mediocre, but performs terribly on my computer. The Diablo-esque section was overloaded so badly by the sheer number of enemies on screen it dropped to less than 1 FPS which is inexcusable. I ended up having to leave the game unfinished because of this. As others have also pointed out, performance in other areas is also dodgy, especially involving hit detection. The little nods and homages to older video games are quickly replaced by full blown attempts to ape them entirely. One town in particular just pretty much screams "Hey guys, remember that one town in FFVII? Remember this character? Remember that airship? CHECK IT OUT GUYS!" There is no subtlety whatsoever.
