Almost perfect - It'll get there!
This is an excellent space shooter, and the story is pretty good. Still in development, but it has gotten sooooo much better since the initial release. I took a six month break, and recently came back to it, and there have been some excellent additions to the game while keeping the "soul" I fell in love with when it first got released. The ships are varied and fun, the enemies are different enough that the different factions feel different to fight, and the loot is good. Lots of placeholders still, obviously, but I believe they can Get It Done. A better crafting system is rumored, and a hopefully there will be a bit of an overhaul to the component comparison UI, but it's already serviceable. You should check it out!

Actually thorough review
I owe this game a decent review - not the "I got through the first star system" or "I played in-dev version and expected it to be polished" like the rest here. I got into fifth star system and stopped playing because I just don't like to play one game longer than a few weeks. So this is one of those endless open-world open space RPG games, where you have tons of randomly generated random encounters and loot in plain, green, blue, etc. leveling. Just as prescribed by the most washed out (game industry oxymoron) business patterns which I somehow managed to tolerate. After the first star system I learned to ignore all randomly generated missions besides the bare minimum for challenges to cut down on all artificially bloated gameplay which is already abysmally long. You can tell this is completely different game than the first Everspace which was hardcore rouge lite with minimalist content and story compared to Everspace 2. The game tries to get better and more linear after the first two star systems. I liked the third one most so far when it comes to story, new companions, characters overall, music and environments. Later the game's story leans into ancients, religious fanatic cults and it seems to bring more variety but for me too little too late. That's what you get with overstuffed content to bore player. Either you play hard and never finish or play easy to find no challenge but proceed faster. What this game has: - business-approved (BA) tons and tons of loot, resources and junk to sell (Diablo 2 formulae style) - BA tons of crafting from resources, trading, ships and yadida... - beautiful sceneries including nebulas, planet/sun orbit and also down planetside - close quarter interiors in asteroids, wrecks, stations, mines, underground facilities, etc. - dogfights one against the swarm, very rarely squad vs. squad - timed puzzles, shoot buttons in the right order puzzles, rotate cubes puzzles and more puzzles - linear story with growing companion crew

great action
game has great fast paced action, great graphics und great audio. i like the equipment and upgrade system. the plot is just plain to advance the action. if you like the humor you may find it great, if not you may find it strange from time to time. but you don't play this for a story :)

Pure fun and engaging
I recall Wing Commander, X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Star Lancer and other space mission sims of days past... Everspace franchise, has brought back these fond memories and worked on a full narrative and mission campaign with Everspace 2. The only down side of the game is of course the lack of multi-player support. Not being able to fly a sortie with my friends... but as a single player game? It's a must have for anyone who enjoys space combat simulators!
