Dying is part of the story !!

This game is beautiful... the colors, the explosions, the ships, and also the creatures, if you get the DLC. The enemies are not dumb at all !! The AI is very well made, and different between enemies. A drone will attack directly without avoiding fire, but a ship will evade a lot and will always search to get your back. Enemy ships firepower/resistance will almost match (or surpass) the one of yours. This and the fact that you will be always outnumbered is what makes the game difficult (and rewarding). You WILL die. Losing every material and things you collected/constructed during the session, BUT you can still spend your money for upgrades that will stay there forever, making your next play easier. (A very similar concept that is in the game Risk of Rain) Your fist play sessions will be of like 5/10 minutes, but after some deaths will become even 70 mins and more. Also every time you'll reach a new sector, a part of the story becomes clear... even the reason why you remember all your deaths...

Beautiful game no learning curve

After rewriting this review for the 4th time, because of cursing at this game every line, let, me make something clear. No Q&A game developer played this game. No really. I remember playing Privateer 2 and being stuck in a system for 7 hours, killing enemies that kept spawning every time, and prevented me from leaving the system. This game takes that frustration and screws you 10x over. When you first start a game, you don't toss the fking universe at them. This game does that. Not in hard mode either, this is welcome to game then fks you for buying it. I've restarted 18 times and I cannot outrun, avoid, find an easier path, nothing. I end up flying into systems that jam me from jumping but Nothing in the tutorial even informs me that I need to either fly far away or destroy it. half the time it's a fking enemy corvette! YOU CAN hardly kill an enemy fighter in your starter ship and they pit me against a corvette at the very beginning? Then, when I ender another system where jumping is jammed, provided I'm not half dead, I got to fight off 3-4 fighters who all have expert aim, to do something with a jamming source, but I never make it. No explanations on any hazards until you already step into them and when you die, you end up in some Great Hanger in the sky, that doesnt exist and only pisses you off because you have to restart that map, only you lose everything but credits. The intro says you got to get somewhere, but if you take too much damage or run into one of several jump jamming areas, you cant progress past the 1st fking intro missions. Screw you Rockfish. Seriously.

What describes it best

Some already said: A mixture of concepts of FTL and Freespace. Note that this is not a free-roam-kind-of game - no open world, no role playing elements. It is a 50:50 mixture of arcade game and old style try-until-you-get-there. Having said that - it does that very well and I admit I expeted way worse after FTL and into the breach. The game has formidable graphics, in fact one of the best I have seen, colorful nebula, blazing suns, dark and terrifying mist scenarios. The game concept is well done, well thought and once you get the grip and concept it is fun to play. You level your ship up with each playthrough as you discover the linear story until the end. So well done, but of course not a AAA game. Graphics: Very good Sound: Very good Story: Mediocre (Good, but not much) Replayability: Bad Concept: Arcade shooter with permanent level ups Gets a 4 stars from me because of the graphics and the well done overall though it is not my favorite gaming experience.

too much grind, randomness

As a Wing Commander / X-Wing / Tie - Fighter etc. fan in my youth, I thought "Ohh a roguelike in space, super cool". first of all the graphics are gorgeous and the sound is great (the voice-overs are a little bit lacking, but still good) Firstly, the ground principle of this game is a 1:1 copy of FTL, it's an unapologetic copy of the same stuff. Jump from sector to sector, even the map looks the same. Sadly the gameplay loop is not that great, it plays like Freelancer, so it's more a shooter than a space sim, you point the mouse in the direction the ship turns and the rest ist WASD + shift for afterburner. The dogfights are ok, nothing special with maneuvers of such stuff. The grind is kind of horrible and seems artificial long, you have to be lucky to get fuel, if not -> damage and maybe dead. no nanobots -> no repair -> dead. There are skills for your pilot and ship, and some are just to drag the hours of gameplay, like "get more credits", credits are the main resource so buy upgrades, so it's a must to grind this skill. The combat is ok, the story mediocre. The story doesn't have gameplay moments in which it unfolds, just after a jump you get visions/flashbacks. What REALLY turned me off is the gathering of resources, nanobots and mining every level and of course after every death. It's very boring and tedious. This feels like a 5 hours game dragged to 30h by roguelike elements, but the gameplay doesn't really hold up. After now ~7h I'm bored. I guess I will download a trainer/cheat and get the grind skills, maybe a new ship and see how it goes. A little bit disappointed, 2,5/5. Only get this if you are super into rogue-like and grinding. PS: if you don't want to spend so much time grinding, the trainer makes life easier and in my opinion the game better.

Nice Graphics, Very Difficult, Not Fun!

This is an easy to understand but difficult to master FPS Space Shooter. While the commands and interface are laid out in a manner that makes them intuitive, I found in practice that the initial learning curve is very steep to the point of being unfair and not much fun. Even on the easiest settings, you will find yourself starting over again about every 5 minutes and having to play the same section over and over again. The problem is that initially you have a very weak ship, small weapons, thin armor, crappy shields and the pseudo perm-death system means that any of the money earned during repeated runs does not accumulate so there is no way to make improvements to the ship unless you happen to get very lucky. Even in the first section, your craft will be attacked by 10 to 25 other vessels at once. You might get lucky and shoot a few of them down, but the sheer number of enemy ships shooting at the same time will finish you off quickly. Some folks might find this sort of steep learning curve fun, and while I think the graphics are very nice, I've see this style of game done much better. I suggest the developers rethink the initial learning curve or at least allow earned credits to accumulate on the easy skill settings so the ships can be improved to a point where they have a fighting chance of completing a run. One other note that does seem odd for a space sim, is how they have handled Joystick controls. The game advises that it is best played with Keyboard and mouse. It does provide an option to use an Xbox type controller but support for standard joysticks is lacking. There is some support for Joysticks, but it is very minimal. For testing I used a Cyborg X, and an X52 Pro. While I was unable to get them configured correctly in game, I worked around the issue by creating profiles for the devices that emulated the default keyboard controls and while this did work, they were way too sensitive to make them a practical alternative.
