Great space sim with fantastic gameplay.
Everything is highly polished in the game, from visual effects to ship controls.
Every weapon effect is beautiful to look at, sounds are popping and using them is always satisfying.
Fast paced combat is a delight and exploring the environments is rewarding.
The story actually integrates well with the rogue like mechanics.
The rogue like gameplay is probably the biggest issue of Everspace, leaving you often feeling empty handed at the end of a failed run, but hey it is part of the charm.
With Everspace 2 coming with a persistent open world this is a great and fantastic introduction to the universe
My love for space shooters is stronger than my dislike for roguelikes, ever since I played Freelancer all those years ago I fell inlove with the genre and this game is a great entry, progression is painful and slow, but with enough patience and a bit of luck you can conquer it
I'd say is a 3.8/5, I only wish it had more "classic" approach, losing my beloved weapons at the start of every run is a pain
Also, I encountered the strangest bug, I remapped my "system menu" key, but the second time I ran the game the key stopped working and the "system menu" bind option disappeared from the menu, now I can't open the system menu while playing and the only way I have to stop a session is to die and jhit escape on the hangar screen or outright hit alt+f4
I was initially skeptical about all the negative reviews but I think that might be due to the many years that have passed.
(Note: I do not touch easy modes for games periord. So I played this on Normal to begin. So if you play easy mode. Your mileage may vary)
Got into this game and they really don't give you much to go off of outside of a basic tutorial.
This does make the game way more difficult as you are figuring out things as you go but I think this is perfect actually. As it fits the tone of the game and means you can really feel yourself progress. Hitting a new sector is rewarding as initially it was difficult for me to survive even a couple jumps let alone a whole sector.
Once I had the controls figured out. I started to figure out different strategies, utilizing cover, resources etc... The game is paced amazingly so you can get away without using or even paying attention to most of the game elements in the first sector and the necessity of things to be used later on increases. I didn't even start using missiles until sector 4
This is due to increased difficulty and need for new strategies and resource management
The Combat is a ton of fun. I already have a bunch of fond memories getting into this game. It's very rewarding and has a high skill ceiling and a solid learning curve
It's also beautiful and has some solid music
I have to say game has an interesting concept that works most of the time, but I think its not meant for everyone. For starters it's roguelite you are going to inevitably die but will improve with upgrades or as in this game's case 'perks' so don't just start an entire new run without spending any credits which you will earn in each run. But the important feature is flight mechanic you need to master piloting your ship period.
By that I mean learn how to ascend, descend, roll, dodge and flee. Yes, you can’t win all the time, this is all about survival. So, it is ideal to engage the enemies strategically using cover behind the rocks use alternative weapons and mods when underfired etc. It is nevertheless a learning curve but a rewarding one, the game recommends the keyboard and mouse which makes sense since most of the movement system is possible with that combination I have tried the controller but didn’t have much luck but its still doable. As I said before it seems with the controller there’s auto-roll your ship resets into default position on itself but it’s not really a bother, maybe a little distracting.
The graphics and soundtracks are great and really give you those space vibes. I didn’t pay much attention to the story but its there seems alright I picked up a few things from the narration but you are not going to see some amazing cutscenes just not the actual focus of the game the case with any roguelites but its nice to have extras right?
Overall, I highly recommend it’s a fun game with intuitive controls just watch out for enemies’ line of fire as long as you not under their crosshairs or in the opposite direction where they are shooting you should be fine.
