fun, for the most part

the first thing you have to understand about this title is that it is a rogue-like first and a space dogfighter second the game begins much like any other in the genre by setting an unachievable goal and telling you to complete it; which can be quite daunting at first as you are never quite told how far away it is and start off in a rather under equipped state. As you throw yourself at the wall repeatedly however, you will inch closer and closer to the end goal by acquiring perks, finding blueprints that make advanced gear progressivley more attainable, and ultimatley learning the flow and feel of the game, as well as what it wants and expects of you. it is in this inching closer that towards an ultimate goal that the game finds it's true sweet spot for those who're truly patient. the game's core progress mechanics themselves are similarly fun; though the flying mechanics are rather fun too, with reasonably achievable dogfights to be had at nearly every stage of the game. that said, the gameplay is somewhat forgiving, I personally would have liked less excessive inertial dampening and less of a v-tol esque flight style, but I understand that you can't have everything. ultimately it's just unreserved fun trying to reach the end goal. unfortunatley when you do reach it, the game becomes decidely less fun; rather than ending the game straight away upon reaching your goal, the story (which I won't spoil beyond this little tipbit) challenges you to redo the entire run potentially up to eight more times (hough it can be done in 3 or 4 if you know what you are doing) as fun as it is trying to do this the first time, it is decidely less interesting on successive attempts as your over powered build by this point renders the game from a challenge into a chore. as not so fun as this section is however, I find myself forgiving it, simply because of how well paced the initial run is, and for that run alone, I recommend the game

Great rogue-like with potential for more

I love rogue-likes, and I love Everspace. Although buying the DLC "Encounters" is mandatory, seriously just get it along with the base game. The gameplay is fast-paced the dogfights are fun, the visuals are stunning, I love the sarcastic and cynical board-computer HIVE. The story is meh ,but who palys a rogue-like for the story anyways? It's overall a great game, although there are some aspects with room for improvement. This game could use more weapons and ship designs. Also the way progression is in this game is not as fulfilling as it could be. The only ressource that really matters overall are credits. Everything else is lost on death and just useful for the current run. It can feel like a shore to fly around collecting all these ressources to hopefully craft an upgrade when it can be lost all in an unlucky encounter. Where this game shines though are the fights. if the devs make another DLC which adds more weapons and ships and somewhat rework the whole progression system to make collected ressoruces a bit more valuable this would be a solid 5/5

Fun, addictive, rewarding

I was pleasantly surprised how much fun I was having in theis game. It is very addicitng and fun. Its great for pick up and play a couple runs or for a long session. The game is hard on regular dificulty. But It is very rewarding when you start to get better. You slowly increase in power and further and further. I love it. Worth it at full price and its a steal when on sale.

Stunning weapon effects and fast combat

Great space sim with fantastic gameplay. Everything is highly polished in the game, from visual effects to ship controls. Every weapon effect is beautiful to look at, sounds are popping and using them is always satisfying. Fast paced combat is a delight and exploring the environments is rewarding. The story actually integrates well with the rogue like mechanics. The rogue like gameplay is probably the biggest issue of Everspace, leaving you often feeling empty handed at the end of a failed run, but hey it is part of the charm. With Everspace 2 coming with a persistent open world this is a great and fantastic introduction to the universe

I stay away from roguelikes, but

My love for space shooters is stronger than my dislike for roguelikes, ever since I played Freelancer all those years ago I fell inlove with the genre and this game is a great entry, progression is painful and slow, but with enough patience and a bit of luck you can conquer it I'd say is a 3.8/5, I only wish it had more "classic" approach, losing my beloved weapons at the start of every run is a pain Also, I encountered the strangest bug, I remapped my "system menu" key, but the second time I ran the game the key stopped working and the "system menu" bind option disappeared from the menu, now I can't open the system menu while playing and the only way I have to stop a session is to die and jhit escape on the hangar screen or outright hit alt+f4
