Oversensitive and Bad Intro

My main gripe for this review is the following: I dont have the newest XBox Controller but it works just perfect for every other game that i play with it on the PC. Since the controller is not the newest its Sticks are of course somewhat effected by this and tend to minimaly push into the one or other direction. That is normal and nothing to be ashamed off, it happens to all controler based control sticks with age. However, Everspace takes every miniscule input and reacts to it which leads to unasked drifting and careening and lowering the controler sensitivity in the settings doesn't do anything against that. There is also no simple way in the Controler setting to revert the use of the sticks so when i try to rebind them the game doesn't just take the input of one stick but both. Additionaly the tutorial is rather badly thought trough. If you are trying to introduce me to the game maybe deactivate the RNG until you are done. I got killed because the characters were talking and the screen was full of control advice while i was instantly attacked upon appearing in the current level. Not a good first impression.

Well crafted, challenging & fun!

First of, I got this game for free with one of my other purchases so I can't say whether it's well worth the price tag. On the other hand, given the piles of $h!t we we've served over the last year by our AAA industry I'll go out on a limb and say that the 30$ price is certainly fair. I played for 5 minutes, logged off and bought the DLC. I was so impressed with the level of polish I felt I was robbing the dev by playing my free copy. In short it's a cross between Descent (yeah that old game we used to rock back in the 90s), FTL and Deadcells. It almost feels like FTL 2 in 3D in the best possible way. I read that the game was inspired by other simillar titles but I haven't played any of them so I can't say much in that regard. Pros: - Great SFX, Music, Voice acting; - Cheesy story that smells like a B movie rip off of an overhyped blockbuster that tanked at the box office. Love every bit of it! - Top notch controls; - Simple crafting system that is easy to understand and use; - Lots and lots of stuff to shoot and even more stuff to shoot it with; - Can be insanelly hard if you let it; - Fight off a pack of enemies with 30 hp left and then die by accidentally scraping against a derelict hull of some monstrosity. Best facepalm moments ever! - PERMADEATH! Yes, it's awesome and no, you can't save and reload just before the Elite showed up. Cons: - Could use a bit of UI polish in the menus; - Needs more stuff to do; - Perhaps the tutorials should be expanded to explain some of the intricacies of the game; Closing thoughts. I love this game and find it thoroughly enjoyable. It's not for everyone but if you are a bit of a sci-fi nerd and like to blow $h!t up with phasers, grab your clone and jump in. It's a fun ride!

Pretty Fun, Pretty Challenging

This game is challenging. You will die, a lot, in fact it is intended. Don't get caught up on some of these reviews, death is an integral part of this game. It's one of those "get as far as you can, then upgrade" kinds of games. Every decision to explore must be balanced, are the resources you might find worth potentially getting into a fight? Should you spend your hard earned credits on repairs or horde them up? You can only spend your credits on persistent upgrades (like weapon slots or engine speed) when you die. Unfortunately this mechanic isn't really explained until after you die, so it can seem pretty frustrating if you just quit. As far as gameplay/UI/controls, think FTL crossed with a space combat sim. Flight is fluid, maybe too fluid? It feels like I occasionally drift, due to the way your pipper can move in front of the craft (it's not locked to one position). Actually picking up new weapons and gear can be a little frustrating sometimes. Graphics are great, in my opinion, and there are in-game camera tools for capturing your battles.

Wants to be 3D FTL...

... but falls short. A game should stand on its own as being a good game, and this does not. I can see where they wanted the game to be much like FTL, but FTL didn't end up screwing you over with lack of resources out of the gate. In this one... i had instances where i had an unlucky start into the game on a run, ended up having life support destroyed, no means to repair this, and then suffocated because the game wouldn't give me any Gas resources. Another run resulted in a similar situation where i got unlocky, spawned in next to an Elite Enemy and got my ship shot to pieces before I even really got into the groove... i won the fight, mind you, but not without having my ships HP down to 10% and my Innertia Dampeners destroyed. With absolutely no repair resources for 2 sectors.. That is not fun, its tedious. I love FTL, but FTL never made me feel like i didn't have a chance from the start. This game, you can get that unfortunate. The next problem is the Sensor Range. Yes, you can upgrade it, but i think the Devs should have played their blood game without upgrades, because it shouldn't take me about 3 hours into the game until i finally can start investing into sensor upgrades. Why are sensors important? Because you don't even know whats in the sector.. so you will spend hours with tedious guess work. And its not like you can even tell where the boundaries of the levels are, because because there is no radar or map. You end up being spun in 3D during dockfights and are supposed to keep track where you have been and what could possibly hold resources, with the background sometimes looking like the foreground. Its just tedious and easy to fix. The game gets so much more enjoyable when you can hack a comms sensor and see everything. No tedium. You see what's there and can make decisions based on that. Risk and reward. Not Tedium and fake challenge.

More then just arcade!

This game changed my perspective about arcade games! I did not expect how arcade style can be twisted with story line. You die a lot in this game and progressing further to the deep sectors makes typical collect to kill game, but wait here is a explanation and interesting story ahead! I did not expect that kind of story in the game! Impressed! Love this game!
