A pleasant space combat sim with enough grind to satisfy goblin neurons. Voice acting ain't bad either, for what little plot there is (though that plot is at least coherent).
Frustrating input scheme complicated by pointless fiddling with switches during fights like so many other space sims. Colony Wars did that better over 2 decades ago without extra analog sticks, guys.
My main gripe for this review is the following:
I dont have the newest XBox Controller but it works just perfect for every other game that i play with it on the PC.
Since the controller is not the newest its Sticks are of course somewhat effected by this and tend to minimaly push into the one or other direction.
That is normal and nothing to be ashamed off, it happens to all controler based control sticks with age.
However, Everspace takes every miniscule input and reacts to it which leads to unasked drifting and careening and lowering the controler sensitivity in the settings doesn't do anything against that.
There is also no simple way in the Controler setting to revert the use of the sticks so when i try to rebind them the game doesn't just take the input of one stick but both.
Additionaly the tutorial is rather badly thought trough.
If you are trying to introduce me to the game maybe deactivate the RNG until you are done.
I got killed because the characters were talking and the screen was full of control advice while i was instantly attacked upon appearing in the current level.
Not a good first impression.
First of, I got this game for free with one of my other purchases so I can't say whether it's well worth the price tag. On the other hand, given the piles of $h!t we we've served over the last year by our AAA industry I'll go out on a limb and say that the 30$ price is certainly fair.
I played for 5 minutes, logged off and bought the DLC. I was so impressed with the level of polish I felt I was robbing the dev by playing my free copy.
In short it's a cross between Descent (yeah that old game we used to rock back in the 90s), FTL and Deadcells. It almost feels like FTL 2 in 3D in the best possible way. I read that the game was inspired by other simillar titles but I haven't played any of them so I can't say much in that regard.
Pros:
- Great SFX, Music, Voice acting;
- Cheesy story that smells like a B movie rip off of an overhyped blockbuster that tanked at the box office. Love every bit of it!
- Top notch controls;
- Simple crafting system that is easy to understand and use;
- Lots and lots of stuff to shoot and even more stuff to shoot it with;
- Can be insanelly hard if you let it;
- Fight off a pack of enemies with 30 hp left and then die by accidentally scraping against a derelict hull of some monstrosity. Best facepalm moments ever!
- PERMADEATH! Yes, it's awesome and no, you can't save and reload just before the Elite showed up.
Cons:
- Could use a bit of UI polish in the menus;
- Needs more stuff to do;
- Perhaps the tutorials should be expanded to explain some of the intricacies of the game;
Closing thoughts. I love this game and find it thoroughly enjoyable. It's not for everyone but if you are a bit of a sci-fi nerd and like to blow $h!t up with phasers, grab your clone and jump in. It's a fun ride!
