The gameplay may seem difficult with the wrong character/weapon combination. You got to choose wisely. Some reviewers mentioned that your fire passes through enemies, it is about the aiming system not collision detection. You need to shoot exactly when the pointer is red, otherwise you will miss even if the enemy is in your face. I only had this problem with bows and enemies in melee range. The bows work fine at middle and long range.
Pros :
-Very nice music that fits the nice dark/fantasy atmosphere.
-Ability to play levels with different characters.
-Nice story telling.
Cons:
-Some enemies that jump like kangaroos and they jump unrealisticly high, pretty annoying. Some enemies jump into lava, rift and die. It is funny :)
-Enemy archers' arrows can pass through walls, barrels etc and hit you at times. This is the only serious problem of the game in my opinion.
I really enjoyed the game a lot and I believe it is worth the money I paid for it.
Preface: I played on easy, did the light path, and have done 3 missions on the dark path. I found easy plenty challenging, and since you can't change the difficulty, it's what I recommend starting on. If it's too easy, you can always use worse equipment for more of a challenge.
There's a lot to like about this game. My favorite aspect is the gold hunting; every level has a certain amount of gold to find, and finding more lets you equip more/better items before taking on a mission. I never felt quite satisfied with the gold I had, so exploring always felt rewarding. The game is also less punishing than I expected. Almost every level has checkpoints where you respawn if you die, meaning you don't need to repeat the whole mission. There's a lot of tools and characters to use, and you unlock them at an enjoyable pace.
Unfortunately, this game has a lot of things that worsen the experience overall. Firstly, the hit detection is pretty bad. Projectiles miss when they should hit, and melee strikes are hard to read and never feel quite right. The game also has an awful difficulty spike towards the end. The game is fairly easy until the last ~3 missions, which are all quite difficult. These missions are overloaded with enemies, and it feels like the game is trying to kill you more than anything. Also, the last boss has several sections where falling to your death is a real possibility, with enemies using push-back attacks and even a small-but-unnecessary platforming section.
There are also some bugs. The worst for me was dying in the third-to-last mission and failing the mission, despite a checkpoint being active. AFAIK, you only fail when dying before reaching a checkpoint. I'm not even sure how I died, which is par for the course in later missions. The game also loves hurting you. Almost every enemy encounter is an ambush where they jump out of windows, over walls, etc, and there are plenty of traps that have a good chance of killing you.
Overall, a mixed bag.
The graphics, music, and environments are really good, especially for an old xbox port. However, the gameplay is what makes this game total crap.
This is a Hack and Slash game where it is very difficult to hack or slash. All of your attacks will go through the enemies most of the time even though you connect. Your shield is worthless because all attacks directed at you go right through the shield.
There are a ton of melee mobs and a couple of levels where a melee character is a good idea. However, the game seems to be designed as a FPS completely ignoring the fact that melee is a significant portion of the game.
Usually the best way to beat a level is to choose the fastest character, run around, and randomly swing your melee weapon or fire a range weapon until either everything is dead. If you die start the level over and try again.
This is the worst game I have ever played.
As other users, I decided to try this game after reading others' opinions on it, and despite the criticism against its gameplay because it seemed fun.
Now, I guess I've played about half of one of the two campaigns (the Light one), and decided to give it up.
- I like the story, and I regret not knowing how it ends.
- Characters looked nice and different, which should have given the game some replayability.
- Character equipment, which can be chosen for each mission depending on the total amount of gold you found in all the previous missions was a good and simple idea.
- Gameplay sucked. Heavily.
In my opinion, the main flaws of this game were :
- Jumping : The more I tested it, the more convinced I became that you can never know how high you will jump. Often the jumps I tried to make stopped at a very low height for reasons I don't know, being the character anywhere : open space, near an obstacle, near somewhere you can jump onto, near an enemy... repeating the jump might make you jump normally, or not. To me it seemed totally random and frustrating.
-- Ranged weapons :
- When using a ranged weapon (I found it the most fun) you never know if you're going to hit or miss a shot, probably due to bad physics/collision. The aiming system consists of a dot in the middle of screen, which turns red if you're aiming at an enemy. This could have worked out nice... if everything was static or collissions where well-made. Enemies move randomly to avoid your shots when they are far, and when close (melee distance) you just can't seem to hit them. It was quite frustrating for me to discover that it was far easier to hit a skeleton than a "fleshy" enemy. Sum up to this, that you need to keep moving too in order to avoid enemy ranged attacks and enemy melee if they are close...
You can notice this problem in the early levels, but in the latter it can become a major problem if your main weapon is ranged, as you can get about 1-hit dead from enemy arrows or massacred in melee in small spaces.
-- For melee weapons :
If you use a melee character, you may end up jumping randomly and slashing around to try to hit more than you get hit and rely mostly on luck to get out alive. You may find this fun or not, but makes the game rather dull.
- Gameplay is 99% based on combat. This is not a flaw for itself, but the previous reasons can make the game very repetitive and not fun at all.
Summing up, I think the game is not very appealing and wouldn't recommend it to a friend.
