At one time this game was decent, but unlike genuine classics, this game simply hasn't retained playability. The story isn't special, the controls are clunky, the graphics are well below current standards. Of course, its age is to blame in part, but many older games have held up much better. This one simply wasn't crafted with great loving care.
So I came here looking for a new ARPG after beating Lords of the Fallen, and seeing all of these reviews I figured there's no way this can be bad. Yeah, I more or less deserved to lose $6 for thinking that. The biggest issue is everyone here is talking paragraphs about what the game did right and how ahead of its time it was, and then glossing over one very big flaw.
The hit detection. The awful, awful, hit detection. The so bad the game is essentially unplayable hit detection. The "I'm a hack and slash with some cool ideas and really shit hacking and slashing" hit detection. The "Seriously just buy Dark Messiah Might and Magic instead" hit detection. The "It doesn't matter if they made a truly unique fantasy universe if the combat is like watching two toddlers swing foam swords at each other wildly" Hit detection.
I want to give this two stars for at least being ambitious, but that slight competence elsewhere is what made me buy a fundamentally broken game. This was because of the opinion of people that are not really considering how well it has really aged, and what constitutes a good game as opposed to a game that was interesting for its time. People are free to their opinions and I do believe this may have been a genuinely good game back 13 years ago. Sadly while some games age like a fine wine and can be a breath of fresh air from the more annoying pitfalls of modern gaming , this was likely a really nice milkshake that curdled and maybe a cat pissed in it at some point between those 13 years of then and now.
The sh script installer uses a wine wrapper that then looks for winetricks to set some prefix defaults it's basically running this game in a compatibility layer
Could not get it to launch either
it would go to load and then instantly crash and leave my monitors gamma set extremely high
If you're hoping for a native linux port of enclave this ain't it
I own the original boxed games but decided to check the GoG version.
Obviously GoG's Enclave is plagued with the same gameplay issues.
While the game's promise is quite interesting, and even the storytelling, the execution isn't.
The knight, for example, is cursed with the in-capacity to hit his opponents (like goblins) with his melee weapons and with a slooow swing time (really, no one swing a scimitar so slowly) that make it easy prey of adversaries while the shields yields awkward results.
This will result in frustrating sessions.
With the huntress, the bow wielding woman, the situation greatly improve but the poor hit check code results in arrows that literally pass through you enemies without anyone noticing.
The secrets... well, I think that everyone will find every secret even in the first playthrough (not necessarily evil ...)
I usually hate to review a game (or TV show or Movie) until I've played/read/watch the whole thing. But Enclave is so broken I felt that I must warn others. I played for about 3 hours to give it a chance, but had to give up.
Enclave is broken. It is obviously a rushed effort to put out a hack-n-slash game to fill a void before a deadline. Playing the whole game is frustratingly impossible for me. Not because it was too difficult, not because there were frustrating enemies, but because the whole game is broken. A heel-high pebble can block your path. Every enemy is jumpy and unpredictable (in a bad sloppy-design way, not a clever challenging way). Hits that should connect don't, blocks that shouldn't connect do, and basic walking is a jittery, bouncy, unpleasant experience. Come on! making your character WALK in a straight ling shouldn't be difficult. No, it isn't my controls, GOG, or the PC port - it is a terrible physics/game design.
Devil May Cry came out a year before Enclave and it had better graphics, a similar hack-n-slash level-by-level design, and it actually WORKED. Demon Stone was similar in gameplay and came out not too long after. I'm sure there are many similar titles in that timeframe with similar gameplay that are vastly superior.
My advice: Find something better. Enclave isn't even worth the time it wastes, and it is certainly not worth paying for.
