Description
ELEX is a handcrafted action role-playing experience from the award-winning creators of the Gothic series, set in a brand new post-apocalyptic Science Fantasy universe that puts players into a huge seamless game world full of original characters, mutated creatures, deep moral choices and powerful action.

In ELEX, you join the war over a powerful resource that gives people great magic-like powers but turns them into indifferent cold creatures. You decide if emotions and humaneness or cold synthetic logic will rule the world of Magalan.
  • Completely seamless Open World experience without borders and loading zones for the ultimate exploration experience
  • Vertical Exploration: Use the jetpack to reach any place in the game world
  • Simulated game world where everything reacts to the players actions and provides for an authentic atmosphere
  • Highly interconnected quest system that support true player choices
  • Tactical and challenging combat system for close and ranged combat
  • Universe set in a post apocalyptic science fantasy universe that combines the most interesting aspects of all genres

Disappointing

Gothic had orcs and dragons, Risen had pirates and monsters. ELEX has beserks fighting with axes and magic, alongside clerics being hightech robot fanatics, next to anarchists (or raiders in terms of Fallout) doing dirty weapons, battling psycopath junkies with air vessels. Gothic (not counting 3/4) was mostly a green world, Risen mostly Carribean sea. ELEX has a European-style national park, a freezing arctic, a dusty desert, a lava world with hexagon cliffs. At some point in the map, all those harsh borders come together in a few square meter. So we end up fighting, as a cold-turkey junkie, allied with raiders, fighting bit robots with a bow and arrows – successfully! – next to an icy hole in the desert. You try go out into the world, carefully, just to notice that close-combat really sucks since it completely drains the stamina bar within a very few, weak hits, just to notice that a bow does the job without that penalty from a safe distance, and that you better should be doing boring quests anyway, since XP rewarding is imbalanced as hell. DON'T STEP OUT before level 15 or so, really. The world serves little but garbage and monsters, it takes some time to notice we are really just out for a bunch of ELEX potions. Forget about secret weapons, treasures, it's an empty world, nothing like Fallout 3+. Ah, and there is no HP value you can see, but spending skills requires you to solve linear equations to see how to proceed, despite not having a clue what's relevant anyway. The game tries hard to present a lot of world and story, yet if fails to do any thing sufficiently good. For a short amount of time, it feels enjoyingly a bit like Fallout (in the desert, next to the raiders). Music is good, speakers are as well. But other than that, I found it disappointing and hard to play through.

Piranha Bytes at it's best

I really enjoyed this one. Yes, it's no AAA title, the combat system can get frustrating against multiple enemies, but the story is not that bad, the characters are all wonderful suspicious, even the graphics are not up to date, the open world looks really nice. Everywhere you can feal soft Gothic vibes, which make this game feel so familiar. Compared to the Gothic series, the technical state is excellent, no community patches needed. If you liked the Gothic series, you will like this one for sure. Ignore the weak rating, either you like Piranha Bytes games, or you hate them.

Not Gothic but you can still fell it

Elex is a rich RPG with a lot of depth, great mechanics and amazing world. It looks kind of modern but the laggy controles, stiff animations and complicated shooting mechanics still show the gothic ancestry. The one gripe I have is that it feels unfinished. It seems like they build that amazing world and story and then ran out of time. A lot of end game storylines dont make any sense and once you are strong enough to explore the world theres not a lot to find.

Can't rebind some keys!

Seriously, ID software figured this out 20 years ago. I don't care how little or underfunded your company is, this is not complicated! PC Gamers, by and large have keys they're accustomed to using. WASD is a TERRIBLE keyboard layout leftover from two player games on Apple IIs. ALL KEYS SHOULD BE REBINDABLE! Not only is it impossible in game to bind the keys I want, there doesn't even seem to be a reasonable workaround like a .ini file I can edit. There's a big thread on Steam from 2018 where they tried to figure this out, contacted the publisher, still they haven't fixed it? Just shows a lazy developer and I'm sure the port will aggravate me in other ways. I hate being irritated by a game before I can even started playing in this way.

Piranha Bytes jank...

PROS: + large open world to explore with no hand-holding + no map full of question marks and markers + blends fantasy, sci-fi & post-apocalypse + jetpack allows for (limited) vertical exploration + actions and consequences CONS: -- combat is typical Piranha Bytes jank: it's terrible - mediocre presentation, outdated graphics, wooden animations, bad sounds and mediocre voice acting, repetitive character models - AI pretty bad - conversations carry on during combat - menues are horrible to navigate - "cold meter" (this game's version of a moral meter) is only shown as a single word - bland quests - bad writing/script BOTTOM LINE: If you are like me and love to explore huge open worlds to the fullest but hate the hand-holding and map markers and flashy GPS symbols everywhere, then ELEX will keep you occupied for a very long time, if you are willing to ignore the typical Piranha Bytes jank and baggage. The combat is clunky and bad. It is easily the worst part of the game and somewhat reminiscent of their earlier games (GOTHIC series). It also maintains key features of these games, such as the slow progression from stick wielding wimp to somewhat capable fighter, the division of the games in difficulty zones (you are free to go wherever you want but the enemies are not scaled to your level), and the different factions. On the ugly side you got the mediocre presentation: while the landscape looks good and offers a lot of diversity, character models don't, many of which a copy & paste jobs (female models in particular), animations are stiff, sound effects poor and the voice acting mediocre at best. I did not care for the writing in the game and the quest design, which kind of makes you everyone's biatch with your tedious, standard fetch & collect quests. Overall I kinda liked it for the most part, but it has some serious flaws and jank to it as well. I recommend buying at a sale ($10 max.).
