Hit and miss
Ah, another French indie game with large ambitions, that seems to just not reach half of what they wanted to do or promised during the kickstarter. Rather than being hit OR miss, this game is both hit AND miss, hence, 3/5 stars. For me, the most important points of contention are the story and the gameplay. Other people like to focus on the graphical and audio side of the game, but I have little problems with that. In any case, the story: heavily inspired by JRPGs like Final Fantasy, Xenoblade Chronicles, and othhers, but without many of the typical tropes that usually come with JRPGs when developed by actual Japanese companies. Overall, not necessarily bad, but the pacing is all over the place, and many of the plot points are not finished at the end of the game. I really liked the story; but it took a long while to get into it. In between story beats, you will either be roaming the overworld (which is a combination of extremely flat and boring grass-fields, and massive structures surrounding said grassy fields that you never look at or interact with), or stuck in one of the many tedious battles, which, unfortunately, are slow as hell... Which brings me to the gameplay: for a large part of the game, you can never make full use of the battle system, because you lack party members. The additional members come farrr too late. Only then is when I actually started enjoying the battles (although the enemies still are massive HP-sponges). Many of the other mechanics outside of battles are overly complicated, and/or unneccesary (looking at you, crafting... that is SUCH a slog) Of course, there are other things, but most of these can be chalked up to it being the product of a small indie studio, so I feel I cannot be too strict in that regard. So: keep your expectations in check, buy at sale, and see for yourself.
