Exactly what I wanted DOOM3 to be

This updated version of DOOM3 is one of the most value-packed titles I've ever seen from Bethesda, and it hits all the right spots by being raw fun. This title contains 3 "episodes" or level-sets: the base DOOM3 campaign, Resurrection of Evil, and The Lost Mission. Overall it's many hours of play, and the Nightmare difficulty is unlocked independently for each episode, which adds to the replay value (trust me, to take on Nightmare, that practice is vital). If you're a DOOM3 veteran (or don't mind can tenuously be called here "spoilers"), you may want to try playing all the episodes in reverse; starting with The Lost Mission (which is the fastest, most action-oriented of the chapters), followed by Resurrection of Evil and then DOOM3. There are quite a few secrets hidden around, and there was an emphasis on more run-and-gun gameplay rather than the slower, more ambient vibe of the original DOOM 3. Curiously, while assets are re-used between the three episodes, there is a lot left exclusively to DOOM3 (which is still the longest episode) which lets it keep its title as a solid experience in its own right. The older DOOM games that are included as well (DOOM 1 and 2) run great and scale up very nicely on modern display devices, and are quite a nice bonus! There are a few graphics abnormalities, and the graphics settings themselves aren't as flexible as I'd normally like, but the game looks and runs great on most modern rigs so there's nothing for me to complain about. Some tips to enhance your experience... * To enter Windowed Mode, you must press ALT + Enter; there is no option to do this in the menu. * For a performance boost, disable Flashlight Shadows in the Gameplay settings menu * FOV 80 is cramped, but might allow for better accuracy due to weapon/HUD offset. Props to Kalandir's review for the CFG tips, if you want to poke around under the hood of the game and enable the Console once more!

Doom meets resident evil

I play this game on both original pc and Xbox 360 and I have blast. This game will give the jumps and kicking some ass. The bfg edition is alright but still fun spically, playing the xbox controller but, original game has better graphics.

Aging like fine wine.

*My views are based on the OG Doom 3, which is included with the BFG Edition purchase as of this writing. Doom 3 has always had a mixed reputation, (at least once the frenzy over its then very advanced graphics engine died down) having played the game again, but finally experiencing the PC version after years of the Xbox port and the BFG on PS3, I can safely say I feel like their absolutely was a very solid and worthwhile entry to the Doom franchise made here. (Doom 64, similarly, faced initial criticism, but a very good consensus has formed around it) As opposed to the high adrenaline action Doom is known for these days, this entry focused on an intense and foreboding atmosphere, almost feeling at times like a first person Survival Horror game. It's best played in a dark room with headphones on. Mayhaps a bit too many monster closets, and it definitely feels a bit long in the tooth in the middle. Additionally, the shotgun in the vanilla campaign never felt or looked quite right to me. Thankfully their is a plethora of mods out there for this to fix my weapons complaint, and even a simple quick mod to fix the gravest sin the main campaign committed, not having the super shotgun. Best played with kb&m, but if you prefer a controller the BFG edition has robust support for those. It's regularly on sale, so get it while it's hot.

So close, yet so far.

I was a major "doomhead" back in the day. The first level of Doom 3 was everything I'd hoped for, and more. Spooky - downright creepy. They stuck with the "things from Hell" story line. I was concerned they'd do something with a zombie-like virus. Controls were good. Graphics were excellent for the time, (they're now somewhat dated). With that said, the remainder of Doom 3 relied on jump scares and minimal, if any, lighting. There's actually old jokes about how insanely visually dark Doom 3 is. I would best describe it as turning off your monitor and wildly fiddling with your mouse. Your character had a flashlight, but lacked the expertise to hold it and a pistol at the same time. I suspect the new Doom Guy couldn't walk and chew bubble gum. Anyway, this was eventually addressed. The lighting increased somewhat. Mod-packs introduced a flashlight/pistol dual wield and an armor-mounted flashlight. The part of the fan base that liked the darkness, rebelled and began to hate on the game. The players that didn't like the darkness were already turned off (myself included) and also hated on the game. Thus all the bad reviews. The game play really isn't bad. The big, room wide, fights from Doom 1 and 2 are gone. Sweeping levels in a tactical manner is the norm. If that's for you, then this game is for you. If you want to relive your Doom 2, plasma bullet hell, room full of bad guys, fire the BFG and pray memories, this will disappoint.

Great games, not so great package

The original Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 are all great games on their own right and each of them still hold up relatively well, so having them all in one package for modern PCs sounds great, right? Yeah actually, just that the BFG Edition is a downgrade in notable areas. No, it's not the censored Wolfenstein levels since it's not like they are anything special. And really, you got a new chapter for Doom 2 with nine amazing levels by Nerve Software, so there is no lost here, if anything, you got a plus. The experience on all three games feels a bit cheapened, having worse lighting where every level is a lot more brighter than their original counterparts. Atmosphere is pretty much thrown out the window as moments when the games go dark feels rare now. Yes, being able to see is important in an FPS game, but Doom wasn't all guns blazing, there were moments of tension as levels can pull of unexpected surprises, so you'll feel that downgrade when you go from playing the originals to the this. Doom 3 suffered the worst changes, and it's pretty easy to notice right away when you see how the game they try to make the game action-packed despite that the original game has an emphasis on horror, even if it wasn't all great. Models look too shiny, the updated textures don't really hide the game's aging graphics, and I don't need to bring up lighting again, if you want to know you can play the game to find out (or watch a video). The change to the flashlight was also something I'm not a fan of. In the original game, you sacrifice your ability to fight back when you pull out your flashlight, creating a sense of dread as you may never know what lurks around the corner. But in the BFG Edition, the flashlight is attached to your armor, breaking chunks of the game as there is no reason to not have the flashlight on. I would recommend the original games if you can/want to get them, but the BFG Edition is still a good deal if you can get it on sale or if you just want more Doom.
