Love this editon

I played Doom 3 back it the day (non BFG edition) and really did love playing it. I guess it's been so long since I've played that I can't really tell much difference between the original and the BFG edition. The differences I can identify are ones I like. The menu is different from what I remember but I like it. The Xbox One controller support is awesome and getting to use the flashlight while shooting, for me, is a welcomed change. I finished the game this morning and was completely satisfied with the gameplay. I actually liked playing this version better than the original. As one reviewer commented, there did seem to be more ammo drops than what I remember from the original. That's fine with me, though! There was one thing I wasn't crazy about, though. Unless I overlooked how to skip cutscenes, I didn't like not having the option to skip. This game is linear. You battle through the story, cautiously looking around corners while listening for sounds which indicate monsters could be nearby. I love it. Scary? No, but there are still some surprise elements throughout the game which will make you fire off some rounds at air. Well, for me anyway. If you have played Doom 3 before, you know what to expect. If you haven't played Doom 3 before and are looking for a decent shooter, this might hit the spot for you. I purchased a copy for $9.99 on sale and do not regret it all. The reviews for this edition are mixed but if you are considering buying this game, you have to remember these reviews are personal opinions. Is this game good because I believe it is a good game? Of course not. It is completely up to the individual who is playing to decide if a game is good or if it's a stinker. That being said, however, if there are 50 out of 50 bad reviews for a game, it probably is a bad game. I still use reviews, from time to time, to help determine if I would like to play the game but I normally do not solely judge on reviews alone. YouTube gameplay videos are what I use the most to determine if I would like to play a game. I gave this game a 4 star rating because, to me, although it is definitely worth playing more than once and is fun, I can't say it is one of my all-time favorites.

Great games, not so great package

The original Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 are all great games on their own right and each of them still hold up relatively well, so having them all in one package for modern PCs sounds great, right? Yeah actually, just that the BFG Edition is a downgrade in notable areas. No, it's not the censored Wolfenstein levels since it's not like they are anything special. And really, you got a new chapter for Doom 2 with nine amazing levels by Nerve Software, so there is no lost here, if anything, you got a plus. The experience on all three games feels a bit cheapened, having worse lighting where every level is a lot more brighter than their original counterparts. Atmosphere is pretty much thrown out the window as moments when the games go dark feels rare now. Yes, being able to see is important in an FPS game, but Doom wasn't all guns blazing, there were moments of tension as levels can pull of unexpected surprises, so you'll feel that downgrade when you go from playing the originals to the this. Doom 3 suffered the worst changes, and it's pretty easy to notice right away when you see how the game they try to make the game action-packed despite that the original game has an emphasis on horror, even if it wasn't all great. Models look too shiny, the updated textures don't really hide the game's aging graphics, and I don't need to bring up lighting again, if you want to know you can play the game to find out (or watch a video). The change to the flashlight was also something I'm not a fan of. In the original game, you sacrifice your ability to fight back when you pull out your flashlight, creating a sense of dread as you may never know what lurks around the corner. But in the BFG Edition, the flashlight is attached to your armor, breaking chunks of the game as there is no reason to not have the flashlight on. I would recommend the original games if you can/want to get them, but the BFG Edition is still a good deal if you can get it on sale or if you just want more Doom.

Good, but not the ideal version.

Good package overall. I played Doom 3 BFG twice loved it, then played the original Doom 3. I much prefer the original, however playing BFG first, I enjoyed it. Changes to the light/torch are part of it but not the whole story. The gameplay is subtly changed. Basically, this is good, but the original is better.

decent effort; worse than the original

In an effort to modernize the original Doom duology, the makers of Doom 3 unfortunately lost a lot of what made the original so interesting and unique, and turned it into something far more generic. For and foremost of these is the level design. Where the original duology had a wide variety of different locations including some large outdoor areas, Doom 3 is 90% generic sci-fi corridors arranged in a linear sequence. When an outdoor area does show up, it gets this silly time limit that ruins the sense of exploration. There's also the annoying tendency of bosses to rely on some sort of invincibility gimmick. Doom 3 isn't worse than the original in all respects - I like the ability to look up and down and the ability to jump, and the spider monsters are a good addition to the series - but it still feels like it takes two steps back for every step forward.

A great buy!!!

I really enjoy playing this game again. This version of the game is my favorite beacuse It includes two DLC's and the two classic games in one package. It´s a different dynamic from the two original games, which makes it a hole new experience. I only wish I could get the multiplayer working again.
