Basically, The Doom that isn't Doom...

...but it still good! (although, personally, the horror genre truly isn't my favourite) Doom 3 (and Doom BFG Edition, which changes the game completely) was supposed to be the 'new' direction of the Doom franchise, after Doom 64, into the Horror genre, switching the frantic gameplay with... something still frantic (to be honest, the 'scary' part and the over used I-got-no-ideas-so-let's-use-them Jumpscares only last, for like, less than half of the game.) but with some... undecisive design choices. Man, this is confusing. Let's start from the beginning. Doom 3 (or, better yet, Doom remake) is a Horror/''survival'' FPS with a weird paced gameplay (but utterly solid gun-play. After all folks, it IS still ID software) and a strange case I-wanna-do-like-system shock game kind of narrative. And, for its time, Doom 3 actually brought, beside the new big graphic, also an innovative light and dark system, perfectly fused with the gameplay (I mean, the torch system is fundamentally what separated Doom from its peers, at the time). Now, if it WEREN'T Doom (and I'm reviewing it like it wasn't Doom) that would fine and dandy... However, since it is Doom, and Doom means killing demons and extremely fast-paced gameplay, the choice of making it slow (from character movement to the pace of story) but then adding features that truly doesn't add well from the old franchise... welp, it isn't great (and yet it is still fun, just not like previous instalments). This issue was apparently so obvious that they try to mend it (and to show something out of a refined game theory, that is changing entirely a game by changing only two of its mechanics) by releasing the BFG edition, which removes the need of a separate torch (now you can always see where you are shooting) and let's you find way more ammo... and makes the game even worse, since it removes the need of survival. Anyway, is worth it? YES! Doom 3 (even BFG) is still an ID game, and that means marvellous!

For me, a classic

By no means it s perfect. the gameplay is so repetitive. but I love the game. it s everything i need to turn my brain off and just relax shooting to slow moving enemies. and the story and acting and direction is really good. a good Martian hell game. and as always, guns are awesome. Great soundtrack too. and the MOOD is unreal. a pun.

A really good game turned bad.

Very lame censorship, cutting down of features and so on. If Quake 4 was released on GOG in all it's glory why not the original version of Doom 3 aas well? Plus the worse part is that they have fitted the entire game on the Id Tech 5 which really makes it tough to run properly such a stunning looking game that used to work so well on low end computers. And forget the mods, multiplayer and the open source nature of the original 2004 release it is all gone and forgotten in what could very well be an outstanding package full of content (Doom1, Doom2 and Doom 3 all in one).

I was so frightend !

Played Doom 3, 6 or 7 times, but this BFG-Edition only 1 times because i got too frightend to play in Stereo3D. In S3D the horror is real and very immersive. It was great to play at night with headphones equipped. Best experiences to play DOOM 3. Recommend to buy if you have a S3D-Monitor. Without that entire package is well enough to buy also.

Love this editon

I played Doom 3 back it the day (non BFG edition) and really did love playing it. I guess it's been so long since I've played that I can't really tell much difference between the original and the BFG edition. The differences I can identify are ones I like. The menu is different from what I remember but I like it. The Xbox One controller support is awesome and getting to use the flashlight while shooting, for me, is a welcomed change. I finished the game this morning and was completely satisfied with the gameplay. I actually liked playing this version better than the original. As one reviewer commented, there did seem to be more ammo drops than what I remember from the original. That's fine with me, though! There was one thing I wasn't crazy about, though. Unless I overlooked how to skip cutscenes, I didn't like not having the option to skip. This game is linear. You battle through the story, cautiously looking around corners while listening for sounds which indicate monsters could be nearby. I love it. Scary? No, but there are still some surprise elements throughout the game which will make you fire off some rounds at air. Well, for me anyway. If you have played Doom 3 before, you know what to expect. If you haven't played Doom 3 before and are looking for a decent shooter, this might hit the spot for you. I purchased a copy for $9.99 on sale and do not regret it all. The reviews for this edition are mixed but if you are considering buying this game, you have to remember these reviews are personal opinions. Is this game good because I believe it is a good game? Of course not. It is completely up to the individual who is playing to decide if a game is good or if it's a stinker. That being said, however, if there are 50 out of 50 bad reviews for a game, it probably is a bad game. I still use reviews, from time to time, to help determine if I would like to play the game but I normally do not solely judge on reviews alone. YouTube gameplay videos are what I use the most to determine if I would like to play a game. I gave this game a 4 star rating because, to me, although it is definitely worth playing more than once and is fun, I can't say it is one of my all-time favorites.
