The game is easy to get into and memorable enough. My only complaint is that I wouldn't really consider mage worth playing. You'll be doing a double swordsman. I only give it five stars rather than four to emphasize that it is still a game very much worth playing.
I played this after Divine Divinity, skipping Beyond Divinity, in anticipation for Divinity: Original Sin.
I really enjoyed Divine Divinity, but this game thoroughly surprised me. It had the same wit as Divine Divinity, and there is so much to see and do. The game was well executed and worth the time to play it. It does start off a little slow, but after a few hours it opens up and continues to get better and better all the way through to the end.
Lots of choices, great voice acting, very good graphics, great story, and many ways to play.
The expansion is fun also, adding several more hours of play, but it does not have quite the same caliber of polish that the main game has.
Well worth the money.
After purchasing this for only 5$ (A true steal) during the Battle Of The Games sale, was I pleased? Yes.
The game features a robust and truly unique rpg system unlike many others allowing complete freedom of choice for the player.Combine this with cool abilities such as mind reading, lock picking and even dragon slaying. In addition, the world is very much alive with almost all (95%) of character having dialogue, multiple questlines and open world to do them in.
NEGATIVES: The world is badly put together in some areas, such as the rivers with visible faults and meshing textures. The voice acting to animation is also a bit off, but not enough to consider it bad.
Overall: If you want something fresh and amazingly fun that will give you enjoyment for hours, get Divinity 2: Developers Cut. 5/5
I'd probably have plenty of good things to say if I could ever get this game to run. And if I ever do get it to run, I'll revise this entire review. But as of right now, here's your warning. I don't know what other reviewers are doing, but I've tried this game on two independent systems, one made this year and one a few years older, and it just doesn't go. And so far the numerous suggested workarounds don't work. Buyer beware. I bought this game because I had read great things about it, but I have yet to see it for myself.
After the mess that was Beyond Divinity I was a little reserved about this game, but after a couple of hours of playing, the game quickly managed to prove me wrong.
Talking about the main game and its expansion I can say that I really found them to be a very enjoyable RPG experince. The gameplay was fun, I liked that there are no class restricitons in regards to the skill system so you can experiment a lot and see what works for you. There are a lot of hidden things and secrets and you can really feel that the game rewards exploration. I found most of the quests to be pretty interesting. There was again this witty humor that I liked in Divine Divinity. The voice-acting was pretty good as well, complimented by a decent soundtrack.
It took me about 60 hours of gameplay to finish the main game and an additional 22-23 hours for the expansion and I did explore as thoroughly as I could. I enjoyed the plot for the most part, I also liked that there were some returning characters from the first game. Also there were a lot of references to the previous games (mostly Divine Divinity) and a lot of references to pop culture and real life people/events. The ending of the expansion was a little underwhelming and it left me wanting for more but I do not think that detracts from an overall excellent experience.
The combat was fun although I did find it a bit strange that you cannot see ground enemies while in dragon form. Still the ability to transform into a dragon gives a certain verticality to the world and opens new ways of exploration. The dragon combat reminded me of the dragon combat in Drakan: the Order of the Flame - a game that is very dear to my heart and one, that I hope I will someday see on GOG.
The "Mindreading" mechanic was very interesting and original. It hels you find new quest solutions, learn some useful information or just to have a good laugh.
Overall I would give a solid 4.5 stars to the game and I definitely recommend it to fans of the RPG genre.
