Still this is more of a walking simulator than a game. The puzzles and chase scenes are too easy to be of any real challenge. The story is what carries the game.
Compared with the previous generation, the picture, performance, music, conception and character details have made great progress.
The decryption techniques and guidance are more mature, and the game rhythm is very smooth.
As a sequel, it is very good and much better than the previous generation
The second title telling story about cruelty of man, but now from different perspective. Less scary, but that was not the point of the game. Distraint 2 focuses on journey through emotions with beautiful ending. Worth it.
I played Distraint when it was given away for free and wasn't very impressed. The writing was mediocre at best, the message much too "in your face," and the puzzles often felt forced and didn't make sense. Now, I replayed it before trying out the sequel and didn't change my mind, so obviously my expectations weren't high.
Fortunately, I was proven wrong because this game really is something. The writing and dark surreal tones are quite spectacular and remind me of R. Michalski's best works: The Cat Lady and especially Downfall (although it also gave me some dark and twisted To The Moon vibes). The story really got me this time and didn't let go until the end. At times it felt like it was dangerously drifting into over-sentimental and cliché waters (which did happen in part I) but almost always managed to restrain itself in time. And that ending: very powerful, stunning, and beautiful.
Puzzles are pretty much the same type and quality as previously, but since the game is now totally surreal, the lack of some real-world logic is justified and doesn't hurt (there is even a funny, self-conscious comment while opening the door with a puzzle lock).
Audiovisuals are top-notch. I am satisfied.
