Now with Hellfire!

Originally developed by Synergistic Software and released in 1997, Hellfire was not an official Blizzard product and did not carry Blizzard’s endorsement or label. Despite that, in response to Diablo players who have expressed a desire to experience the content, Blizzard has given the OK for it to be included as a free add-on with Diablo purchases on GOG.COM.

Hellfire offers a non-canonical single-player storyline where players must defeat a powerful demon named Na-Krul who is threatening Tristram. The expansion also adds a Monk class, new weapons and items, new missions, locations, dungeons, and enemies. Hellfire will be accessible while launching the original Diablo.

Traveler, stay awhile and listen...

Darkness stirs beneath Tristram. An ancient evil sweeps across the land, plunging it into civil war and terrorizing the populace. A mad king, his missing son, and a mysterious archbishop are all pieces of the puzzle you need to hack through. You have journeyed to the source of this evil. The town of Tristram - now inhabited only by a handful of survivors, broken and twisted by the madness that has befallen them. A cathedral stands there, built over the ruins of an ancient monastery. Eerie lights and ungodly sounds are heard echoing through its abandoned halls, and that is where you shall venture.

Embark, if you dare, on a quest to destroy The Prime Evil…

  • Experience the legendary action/RPG that influenced an entire genre.
  • Storm Diablo's halls as either a Warrior, a Sorcerer or a Rogue - each with unique skills and abilities.
  • Unite to destroy Diablo - up to 4 players can band together via Internet, or play head-to-head via LAN.
  • Unprecedented replayability - over 200 different monsters inhabit Diablo's ever-changing labyrinth. Equip epic items to conquer fearsome bosses and their minions.
  • A spine-chilling story - experience the horror of a world held in the grasp of The Lord of Terror.

Ahhh, fresh meat!

Travelers looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.
For those wanting something a bit more modern, Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game tuned for today’s gaming PCs, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, a host of bug fixes and high-resolution support via aspect ratio-correct upscaling.

  • The most voted game on the GOG.com wishlist, finally trapped in a DRM-free soulstone!
  • Return to the beginning of this dark saga, now in digital format for the first time ever.
  • Better value than Wirt's wares, guaranteed.

Battle.net® multiplayer requires you to configure the Router and Firewall Ports, details can be found here.

Welll......

Okay. look. If you loved the game before, you'll still love it. It works on the new systems much better and is, as always, good fun. However, I was kind of expecting a bit more from the release. Like, an update to 16 points of movement instead of 8, a smoothing of the graphics and animations. Not much, but just that little bit. An option for something on the edges of the game if they aren't going to move it to widescreen from the old 640x800. Not a lot, but some things like that would have been amazing. If they get a few people to work on it as a side project for some updates, that would be awesome.

Truly a must have!

I'll quote the GameSpot original review on this game: "Diablo is the best game to come out in the past year, and you should own a copy. Period." More than 20 years later the last part still applies - You should own a copy. Period. Even if we're now in the digital era. I've spent hundreds of hours playing Diablo when it was released and, for many years, it was my favorite game of all times. For most of the people that started with Diablo and not skipped directly to Diablo II, the first iteration was vastly superior in terms of tone, art direction, music and overall feeling. What it lacked in multiplayer (though supported it wasn't really great) it made up in story, voice acting, music, thrills and tension. How did it stand the test of time? Well, after years of gaming it was definitely easier to complete :-) after a little over five hours I've fully cleared all the levels and have slain Diablo. And it was great, just as great as I remembered it. A beautiful trip down memory lane. Do I recommend this for people who haven't played it in the past? Maybe, if you can get over the (obviously) outdated graphics. Should you own a digital copy of Diablo if you've loved it in the past? Absolutely, it's a tribute to pay to one of the greatest games of all times. It's small scale in terms of the AAA games we play today but when placed in the context of its initial release the value is clear.

Golden

A fantastic game which I wish had been remade properly. However I will certainly not complain about being able to jump back in to this wonderful experience. With any luck we will get the Hellfire expansion also!

Awesome Game

When I was going to college I was introduced to Blizzard's Warcraft by a fellow student. Playing Warcraft which was old at the time led me to Warcraft 2. Which in turn led me to Diablo and the Sierra Hellfire expansion. Well that was fun good times and when my father got me Diablo 2 I rarely slept lol. Anyway this is long winded. I own the CD but I can't play it on here, so when it goes on sale I will buy it and any other digital versions of Blizzard Games, they all rock. This one is a hack and slash stress release, not to mention fun to explore. The secret cow level was full of goodies and Wert lost his leg and when you find that it has good uses. Dungeons change which was really cool at the time. Sure it is old but who cares, that is why we are here, the best games are old. Especially these Good Old Games.

A dungeon crawl adventure nothing better

Arguably the best dungeon crawler game to date. It's simple and click-based, but it's simplicity works in its favor. Three classes, the ancient archetypes Fighter, Rogue, Wizard, but you're not locked into anything with class specific weapons or skills. You wanna start out a Wizard but level up Strength & Vitality? You can. You wanna start out a Fighter but level Magic and hunt down rare spell books? You can. Random generated level maps and randomly appearing legendary enemies make every run subtly different, but this is not a role playing game. The character gets very little (if any) interaction beyond simply playing out the story, but for a simple dungeon crawling adventure, there's nothing better.
