Now with Hellfire!

Originally developed by Synergistic Software and released in 1997, Hellfire was not an official Blizzard product and did not carry Blizzard’s endorsement or label. Despite that, in response to Diablo players who have expressed a desire to experience the content, Blizzard has given the OK for it to be included as a free add-on with Diablo purchases on GOG.COM.

Hellfire offers a non-canonical single-player storyline where players must defeat a powerful demon named Na-Krul who is threatening Tristram. The expansion also adds a Monk class, new weapons and items, new missions, locations, dungeons, and enemies. Hellfire will be accessible while launching the original Diablo.

Traveler, stay awhile and listen...

Darkness stirs beneath Tristram. An ancient evil sweeps across the land, plunging it into civil war and terrorizing the populace. A mad king, his missing son, and a mysterious archbishop are all pieces of the puzzle you need to hack through. You have journeyed to the source of this evil. The town of Tristram - now inhabited only by a handful of survivors, broken and twisted by the madness that has befallen them. A cathedral stands there, built over the ruins of an ancient monastery. Eerie lights and ungodly sounds are heard echoing through its abandoned halls, and that is where you shall venture.

Embark, if you dare, on a quest to destroy The Prime Evil…

  • Experience the legendary action/RPG that influenced an entire genre.
  • Storm Diablo's halls as either a Warrior, a Sorcerer or a Rogue - each with unique skills and abilities.
  • Unite to destroy Diablo - up to 4 players can band together via Internet, or play head-to-head via LAN.
  • Unprecedented replayability - over 200 different monsters inhabit Diablo's ever-changing labyrinth. Equip epic items to conquer fearsome bosses and their minions.
  • A spine-chilling story - experience the horror of a world held in the grasp of The Lord of Terror.

Ahhh, fresh meat!

Travelers looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.
For those wanting something a bit more modern, Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game tuned for today’s gaming PCs, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, a host of bug fixes and high-resolution support via aspect ratio-correct upscaling.

  • The most voted game on the GOG.com wishlist, finally trapped in a DRM-free soulstone!
  • Return to the beginning of this dark saga, now in digital format for the first time ever.
  • Better value than Wirt's wares, guaranteed.

Battle.net® multiplayer requires you to configure the Router and Firewall Ports, details can be found here.

Immortal Classic

It's Diablo 1, if you loved it in its day and you omit all the improvements included in the second part, you will surely enjoy it. For me, the base price is disproportionate, I got it on offer thanks to a GOG coupon. I tried both versions (the supposedly improved one) and the classic one, the one improved with the Discord overlay tends to close, if the game is interrupted and you have that option activated you already know what the problem may be. The classic version has a connection to Battle.net in theory, that is if you manage to open the requested ports and you do not have a network that works under CGNAT, in which case you will have to contact your ISP to disable it (perhaps with an extra cost) or you will have to use external software for network play. Something that does not matter too much because you will find almost nobody to play with in the service. Personally I did not see any substantial difference at the graphic level between the HD and the classic version. It currently includes the Hellfire expansion, for 5€ it can give for many hours if you are looking to relive old memories or have someone to play with in coop.

Deathless classic!

It's great to have this game available again. Grandfather of action RPG games. Goes well with The Hell 2 mod!

Great, if outdated game

Runs fine on Linux with Lutris. Solid, game with an atmosphere that I feel is still the best of all Diablo games, however, it is an old game so people might want to consider if they still want to try it or go with the more modern Diablos which have some much needed Quality of Life improvements. Without mods, Diablo 1 lacks visual XP or monster HP bars which can be annoying. You can't use a key to show all items so finding things can be a pain (especially when the background is typically dark). You have a person who refills HP, but not mana. As a Sorcerer this was annoying (though I will say I never hurt for full mana potions). Spells also have a hit chance, but this was also made worse by the fact that some of the spells you had needed to be lined up perfectly to actually hit an enemy. Sometimes, I just had to wait until an enemy closed in melee and hoped my Mana Shield held while I blasted them. I found it was also way too easy for enemies to stunlocked. I think most of the my deaths occurred simply because an enemy would hit me and I would just get swarmed. Also, unlike Diablo 2, death = game over so you have to make sure you periodically save the game (and that their aren't monsters around to kill you right away). One thing I really appreciated was the game didn't over stay it's welcome like some other games. By the time I was ready to be done, I was at the end. The best thing for me was outside of the last level (level 16), it didn't feel like swarms of enemies were thrown at me which is more annoying than fun. It also helped that as a level 24/25 Sorcerer with all points in Magic and a level 8ish Fireball and Chain Lightning, full belt of full mana pots, and Mana Shield, I was pretty much able to kill all foes in 1 - 3 hits (Diablo was like 10) which was nice. Too many games just add HP/Bullet sponges which isn't fun. Still, it may be worth looking at Diablo 2/3 for more modern games with QoL or other ones like Path of Exile, Grim Dawn, etc.

First time play

OK while technically the first time I played it was when Diablo was brand new, I only played it for like an hour so it doesn't count. A couple of weeks ago I decided to play the game and complete it for the first time. For my twitch stream ( www.twitch.tv/trusteft/) and I completed the main game in 4 sessions of total of about 16 hours. Normal difficulty, playing as a warrior. Gameplay wise it is not very complex. You use the mouse to move around and to pick targets, and also to interact with with the GUI (menus, dialogues etc). Left click attack, right click use the chosen spell/scroll/etc. Like any other RPG, after a while you have enough experience points to level up and spread the 5 extra points on your skills, strength, magic etc. Battles take place in a variety size of rooms, all of them underground aka dungeons. You can use potions to recover health, or magic and you need to use potions to recover mana (which is used for spells). If you need to recover health you can do it either by clicking on the "belt" which has room for 8 items and is always shown while you play. Or hit one of the 8 keys (1 to 8 numbers). If you have time or you have nothing left in the belt, you need to go to the inventory and right click on the potion Each belt/shortcut has room for only 1 item so you can't just use say number 1 for all your health potions. They don't stack up. Not the best way of handling things, but you get used to it. In fights you usually have to do tactical retreats when you are overrun by enemies etc. Use your brain. Still, nothing too complex. You can find various types of loot, potions, books (learn spells), scrolls, armor, weapons and rings/amulets. What you wear can be either vanilla, or enhanced. Enhanced for better or worse. They can also require you to identify them (with scrolls or someone do it for you) to "see" what the enhancement is. Portals (spell/scroll) are used to travel to market and back. 5 stars for its time, 4 now.
