Demo version of Dex is available here

Includes the Extra Outfits DLC.

Explore, fight, talk and hack your way through a rich cyberpunk world in this 2D action-RPG!

Wanted dead by a mysterious and far-reaching organization, you will traverse the futuristic city of Harbor Prime and make unexpected allies on your quest to bring down the system! In this cyberpunk adventure inspired by Blade Runner and Neuromancer, you are free to choose your playstyle: will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, a diplomat or a straightforward gunfighter?

Designed as a throwback to earlier 2D platforming and action games combined with modern RPG elements, Dex offers real-time combat, a mature storyline and interactive dialogues.

Customize your character’s skills, equipment and even augmentations – implants which grant you superhuman abilities and open up new paths within the game’s open world.

A revolutionary hacking mechanic also lets you dive into Cyberspace: overcome viruses and intrusion countermeasures to deactivate turrets, overload devices, steal corporate data and cripple your enemies!
  • Rare blend of realism and creative vision: Realistic action, mature storyline, and complex character interactions combined with hand-drawn characters, animations, and environments, arcade-style melee combat, and an original conception of cyberspace.
  • Multiple paths: Operate in physical reality or in Cyberspace. Overcome obstacles using your skills, weapons, augmentations…
  • Meaningful character building: Will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, or a straightforward gunfighter? Improve your character and gear to unlock gameplay-changing upgrades that reinforce and customize your gameplay style.
  • Unique hacking mechanic: Transfer your consciousness to your avatar, overcome intrusion countermeasures, take action, and then return back to your body in a fraction of a real-time second to see the results – deactivated turrets, overloaded devices, enemies with crippled implants…
  • Neo-cyberpunk: Story deeply inspired by the cyberpunk novels of William Gibson and other classical cyberpunk authors, flavored with a contemporary concept of augmented reality.
  • Rich game world and diverse level design: Visit diverse locations in Harbor Prime, a futuristic city complete with luxurious skyscrapers, run-down shantytowns, and seedy red-light districts. Take part in street brawls, steal corporate data, overcome environmental hazards, and, of course, stay alive – no easy task.
  • Three special outfits: The Samio Cyberwear allows you to regenerate your Focus when hacking, the Euroforce BattleRig offers physical protection against bullets, and the Armagear InvisiSuit can make you invisible! You’ll have to be on the lookout for clues about their location, and face serious opposition before earning them!

A Great Cyberpunk Adventure

First of all, I'll admit I'm biased. Cyberpunk has a very special place in my heart. Dex hit the spot: well written and voice acted plot, fun and memorable characters, music that is thematically appropriate, gameplay that fits the setting. It takes thematic inspiration from games like Deus Ex, but with simpler sidescrolling gameplay. And with reduced technical requirements, Dreadlocks was able to concentrate on what truly mattered to me: a content-rich world that responds to your choices as to play through the well-written story. I like that this game that lets you play your way, and that your choices in the story have real consequences. In this way, the game is immersive, with the gameplay and artistic elements playing into the story of corporate corruption and technological growth at the cost of humanity. In so far as flaws go, it's an indie title with all the usual issues. Other reviewers mentioned bugs, but the only bug I found was that a dead minor character came back to life briefly if things were done in a very particular order. I'll also admit that my first impression of the sidescrolling gameplay was that it was user-unfriendly and kind of janky. While my judgment remains, this improves as you get upgrades within the game, reflecting your progression. Personally, I thought this was a neat way to cover up technical issues in a story consistent way. All in all, I loved Dex for a lot of the same things I loved about Deus Ex. While it certainly has some rough edges, I just had a great time exploring its rich and engaging world, while gradually discovering a story of technology and conspiracy.

Frustrating experience

It's the kind of game where you have to heal every 10 seconds BUT every healing item is expensive and rarely found in the world. You have two health bars: one for hacking and one for your character. When you lose a hacking minigame, you don't just lose ''focus'' (hacking HP), you're also losing 50 ''real'' hp, wich screws you without mercy. It's like a double punishment, from wich it's hard to recover because you probably don't have what it takes to heal from. My experience was dying over and over and starting quests again and again because I couldn't hack a freakin turret. I don't have anything to say against the art, the storyline I saw or the music tho, it's good enough for a game I bought in sale for 2$.

Good game, lot of potential

I really like this game, a game about choice and consequences. You can feel the dev put their best efforts doing it. The world is well made, the voice acting is one of the strong side of this game. The actor are great and, without them you will not have the same experience for sure. The other strong side is the story, expecially the end. But i won't say a word, i don't want to spoil it. The gameplay is good, a mix between platform and old school beat-them-up. You can punch, jump, cover and protect, shoot, hack camera and stuff. You have different kind of weapons and three armor you can get by exploring the world. I liked the DA of the game and the main character is endearing. Dialogue are written with humour when needed. Exploring the city is essential, you will learn more about the world, and gain xp by doing side quests. Side quests that a all really good. Not the fedex type, but story driven. And, your choice in dialogue and how you abord the quest will impact the end. Took me less than 10 hours to finish. Some blackspot : the IA have some issues. The shooting system could be better. I feel like there is missing something to be satisfying. In conclusion : If you like old school game, cyberpunk with a good story and a solid world, go for it.

Flawed, but enjoyable cyberpunk RPG

While the combat and the hacking become very repetitive after a while, the writing and the well designed world make Dex a great experience. Thanks to the interesting sidequests and the many secrets, I'd say the game is even worth to re-visit after one playthrough.

had a grand time

I think this is the first time I review a game, so bear with me. I've been gaming very rarely for the last 10 years, for lack of time. I have lately got a Steam Deck, which has allowed me to attempt to catch up. I have 1000s of games to try; most don't hold my attention more than 20mn. I found myself going back to Dex, and I did finish it, something rare for me. No individual part of Dex is good, but the different aspects mesh into a game that holds itself together better than most. The best parts which drag it out of the mud and into the greats: the artistic direction and the story. Neither will stand out immediately, but the artistic direction has this Eu-sci-fi touch, and lived feeling. The story has some original touches and is neat, the characters memorable, and their individual stories are touching enough to provoke emotion. The voice acting is really way better than anything you can expect from a small studio. The worst parts: Hacking sequences are no better than gamejams. Unimaginative levels, difficulty all over the place, very basic mechanics and run-of-the-mill graphics and sound effects. It completely feels like those sequences were an afterthought, and I often found myself thinking, "this isn't fun!" while playing. It's telling that I was willing to put myself through those to continue the story, though! Outside of hacking, action sequences are also barely passable. Combat works by cheese, which isn't very fun. Running and jumping animations have great keyframes that are very dynamic, but the movement itself is stiff. It's not _bad_, but there is room for improvement. I'll be looking at the next game by this studio/people. If they can keep the same level of polish for the story and the graphics, and upgrade the action (or make a turn-based game without action), then I'll be incredibly interested. If not, I'll still be interested! I enjoyed Dex better than a hundred others. Thank you for concocting this neat game!
