Explore, fight, talk and hack your way through a rich cyberpunk world in this 2D action-RPG!
Wanted dead by a mysterious and far-reaching organization, you will traverse the futuristic city of Harbor Prime and make unexpected allies on your quest to bring down the system! In this cyberpunk adventure inspired by Blade Runner and Neuromancer, you are free to choose your playstyle: will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, a diplomat or a straightforward gunfighter?
Designed as a throwback to earlier 2D platforming and action games combined with modern RPG elements, Dex offers real-time combat, a mature storyline and interactive dialogues.
Customize your character’s skills, equipment and even augmentations – implants which grant you superhuman abilities and open up new paths within the game’s open world.
A revolutionary hacking mechanic also lets you dive into Cyberspace: overcome viruses and intrusion countermeasures to deactivate turrets, overload devices, steal corporate data and cripple your enemies!
Rare blend of realism and creative vision: Realistic action, mature storyline, and complex character interactions combined with hand-drawn characters, animations, and environments, arcade-style melee combat, and an original conception of cyberspace.
Multiple paths: Operate in physical reality or in Cyberspace. Overcome obstacles using your skills, weapons, augmentations…
Meaningful character building: Will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, or a straightforward gunfighter? Improve your character and gear to unlock gameplay-changing upgrades that reinforce and customize your gameplay style.
Unique hacking mechanic: Transfer your consciousness to your avatar, overcome intrusion countermeasures, take action, and then return back to your body in a fraction of a real-time second to see the results – deactivated turrets, overloaded devices, enemies with crippled implants…
Neo-cyberpunk: Story deeply inspired by the cyberpunk novels of William Gibson and other classical cyberpunk authors, flavored with a contemporary concept of augmented reality.
Rich game world and diverse level design: Visit diverse locations in Harbor Prime, a futuristic city complete with luxurious skyscrapers, run-down shantytowns, and seedy red-light districts. Take part in street brawls, steal corporate data, overcome environmental hazards, and, of course, stay alive – no easy task.
Three special outfits: The Samio Cyberwear allows you to regenerate your Focus when hacking, the Euroforce BattleRig offers physical protection against bullets, and the Armagear InvisiSuit can make you invisible! You’ll have to be on the lookout for clues about their location, and face serious opposition before earning them!
The game was really really good! Very beautiful cyberpunk atmosphere, nice controls, nice RPG and action elements. I liked the arwork a lot and the story was very engaging.
I didn't like much the ending(s) since the cinematic(s) was(were) too short and would had loved to see an epilogue. In retrospection, the game didn't manage to make a full circle and complete the picture leaving lots of ambiguities, but while not great, it was still enjoyable!
First minutes I played DEX, I wondered if I did a mistake buying it. the game is beautiful, voices are OK, but damn it the character is so weak when you start the game!
and then you have a choice, quit or continue and see if it comes better.
and then to me, it worthed the try! the experience is getting better and better
not so easy, but enough difficult to feel the challenge and not too difficult to feel schredded like a bug :)
just one last thing: thanks to people who made the guide: http://dex-rpg.wikia.com/wiki/Dex_Wikia
sometimes it gave me the hope to continue when I was a little bit desperate (the beginning of the game was really tough to me)
so, I recommand this game, had a great time!
I played the PS4 version, which was largely bug free.
The presentation is great. You'll never mistake it for AAA but the world building was done fairly well, from the neon bright colours to the synth music. The game world is a hub, and you're mostly free to roam each area without too many restrictions. Each has a distinct flavour, although they manage to retain the theme's essence. One thing that annoyed me about the decent soundtrack though is that the OST on sale is lacking several tracks, which are apparently permanently backer-exclusive. Needless to say this just dissuades fence sitters from buying it, or annoys them sufficiently to look up how to extract the music from the game files. Very questionable decision to sell a gimped OST. Should've given backers something else instead of chopping up the OST. Worse, this is a mark against the publisher and people will look for similar shenanigans in any future title.
The writing is ok, not great but solid. The characters serve well enough but overall feel like they could've used more development. For an RPG there is surprisingly not that much lore. Game is fairly short if you rush.
My main gripes are with the gameplay. The platforming is not tight enough, you will know by testing repeated jumps between platforms and see how some inexplicably miss. And forget firearms - aiming felt awkward but the worst sin is you have to buy ammo. Sure, by the end you realize you don't need that much, but throughout the game I felt scared of using up any of that precious expensive ammo. Turns out you don't even need to be great at combat - I unlocked virtually everything else and simply spammed carefully timed punches during the entire game. Not much of a skill tree either, you end up getting everything unless you maxed out combat-related skills.
Don't get me wrong, this is a good game. I focus on the negatives because they detract from the game. I'm down for a sequel - provided they don't butcher the OST again.
First of all, I'll admit I'm biased. Cyberpunk has a very special place in my heart. Dex hit the spot: well written and voice acted plot, fun and memorable characters, music that is thematically appropriate, gameplay that fits the setting. It takes thematic inspiration from games like Deus Ex, but with simpler sidescrolling gameplay. And with reduced technical requirements, Dreadlocks was able to concentrate on what truly mattered to me: a content-rich world that responds to your choices as to play through the well-written story. I like that this game that lets you play your way, and that your choices in the story have real consequences. In this way, the game is immersive, with the gameplay and artistic elements playing into the story of corporate corruption and technological growth at the cost of humanity. In so far as flaws go, it's an indie title with all the usual issues. Other reviewers mentioned bugs, but the only bug I found was that a dead minor character came back to life briefly if things were done in a very particular order. I'll also admit that my first impression of the sidescrolling gameplay was that it was user-unfriendly and kind of janky. While my judgment remains, this improves as you get upgrades within the game, reflecting your progression. Personally, I thought this was a neat way to cover up technical issues in a story consistent way. All in all, I loved Dex for a lot of the same things I loved about Deus Ex. While it certainly has some rough edges, I just had a great time exploring its rich and engaging world, while gradually discovering a story of technology and conspiracy.
It's the kind of game where you have to heal every 10 seconds BUT every healing item is expensive and rarely found in the world.
You have two health bars: one for hacking and one for your character. When you lose a hacking minigame, you don't just lose ''focus'' (hacking HP), you're also losing 50 ''real'' hp, wich screws you without mercy. It's like a double punishment, from wich it's hard to recover because you probably don't have what it takes to heal from.
My experience was dying over and over and starting quests again and again because I couldn't hack a freakin turret.
I don't have anything to say against the art, the storyline I saw or the music tho, it's good enough for a game I bought in sale for 2$.
