Explore, fight, talk and hack your way through a rich cyberpunk world in this 2D action-RPG!
Wanted dead by a mysterious and far-reaching organization, you will traverse the futuristic city of Harbor Prime and make unexpected allies on your quest to bring down the system! In this cyberpunk adventure inspired by Blade Runner and Neuromancer, you are free to choose your playstyle: will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, a diplomat or a straightforward gunfighter?
Designed as a throwback to earlier 2D platforming and action games combined with modern RPG elements, Dex offers real-time combat, a mature storyline and interactive dialogues.
Customize your character’s skills, equipment and even augmentations – implants which grant you superhuman abilities and open up new paths within the game’s open world.
A revolutionary hacking mechanic also lets you dive into Cyberspace: overcome viruses and intrusion countermeasures to deactivate turrets, overload devices, steal corporate data and cripple your enemies!
Rare blend of realism and creative vision: Realistic action, mature storyline, and complex character interactions combined with hand-drawn characters, animations, and environments, arcade-style melee combat, and an original conception of cyberspace.
Multiple paths: Operate in physical reality or in Cyberspace. Overcome obstacles using your skills, weapons, augmentations…
Meaningful character building: Will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, or a straightforward gunfighter? Improve your character and gear to unlock gameplay-changing upgrades that reinforce and customize your gameplay style.
Unique hacking mechanic: Transfer your consciousness to your avatar, overcome intrusion countermeasures, take action, and then return back to your body in a fraction of a real-time second to see the results – deactivated turrets, overloaded devices, enemies with crippled implants…
Neo-cyberpunk: Story deeply inspired by the cyberpunk novels of William Gibson and other classical cyberpunk authors, flavored with a contemporary concept of augmented reality.
Rich game world and diverse level design: Visit diverse locations in Harbor Prime, a futuristic city complete with luxurious skyscrapers, run-down shantytowns, and seedy red-light districts. Take part in street brawls, steal corporate data, overcome environmental hazards, and, of course, stay alive – no easy task.
Three special outfits: The Samio Cyberwear allows you to regenerate your Focus when hacking, the Euroforce BattleRig offers physical protection against bullets, and the Armagear InvisiSuit can make you invisible! You’ll have to be on the lookout for clues about their location, and face serious opposition before earning them!
You can feel the love that went into making it. It helps make the rough spots more forgivable, but they are still there.
Combat is awkward and unsatisfying. However, the visuals are beautiful and the music is atmospheric and helps set the mood.
The ending feels rushed and too much like Deus Ex, but the characters in the game are all fully voiced decently.
The story is solidly mediocre. A lot of familiar cyberpunk themes are worked into something engaging but easy to nitpick.
Pick it up when it's on sale, lower your expectations, and there is enjoyment to be had.
What I really liked about this game was:
- music - really suits the "climate"
- and if we speak about "climate" - for majority of the game it was great - dark, corpo owned etc.
- a lot of lore items, that you could read (pity there were no audiobooks).
What I really didn't like:
1) hacking
2) fighting.
3) lack of tutorials
ad 1 - this strongly reminded me Shadowrun series. God, I hated it so much back then, And here it same, it has nothing to do with RPG, it's rather some "dexterity" repetitive element, that you need put a lot of time and resourcess into although you find no enjoyment in it at all.
ad 2 - AI of enemies is terrible (like really really, they even do not know how to jump), resources are scarce, after short time it become frustrating.
ad 3 - I don't like when game huide you by hand on every occasion but this game do not explain you almost nothing, and when you try to find i.e. controls you will get only basic ones. And then you need to search web.
In general, most of the fun I had was in the first hours - when I was travelling around the city (or sewers), reading books, going to various places, doing quests. But then with repetitive fighting, repetitive hacking and story "erupting" in a quick manner I had less and less fun.
Dex captures the cyberpunk look and feel (and sound!) really well. I didn't run into major technical difficulties like other reviews report. However, being a small game developed by a small team, Dex inevitably has it shortcomings. Controls feel rather stiff and most game systems are underdeveloped. Hacking is probably the most fleshed out here and I think making it a shoot'em up mini game was a clever idea. But just as with combat, stealth and platforming the execution is only mediocre. Writing is mostly good with some exceptions. Like a receptionist giving out confidential information because "women must stick together"? Give me a break...
All in all, I'd say Dex is a fairly priced game that I would recommend to fans of the setting. Just don't expect too much from it.
Unity phoning home causes overheating of junction of GPU to 104C.
Fan whirred up to full speed, checked temperature immediately, it said 104C at Junction GPU.
Have seen this in other Unity engine based games; was fixed when the developer disabled the unity phone home analytics/telemetry.
Disclaimer: I got this game for free.
- Game mechanics are straightforward and easy to understand
- Graphics are ok, for a small budget game
- Cyberpunk atmosphere
- Voice acting is ok, for a small budget game
- Game rewards exploration
- Character development is simple and offers enough variety
I enjoyed the game and 13.69€ is a fair price for it.
