"Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god." - Jean Rostand Thoughts of a Biologist
You play the role of a military commander hidden deep within an underground bunker. Your mission - to successfully exterminate your enemy's civilian population whilst disabling their ability to attack your own. Start by launching your battleships, submarines, and bombers in order to decimate your opponent's defences. Scramble together your alliances, but remember only one can stand victorious. Prepare your pre-emptive strike before one of your supposed allies get the same idea. Choose the perfect moment for betrayal, obliterating your opponents with an apocalyptic thermonuclear barrage, but get it wrong and their devastating counter attack will bring you to your knees!
DEFCON is a hell of a ride for a strategy games fan. What can be more thrilling that a world-wide, thermonuclear conflict that wipes out all of humanity from the face of the Earth? You start slowly, deploying your forces on international waters, sneaking under the radar. Then, as the DEFCON level changes, players are allowed to use aggressive tactics and even start a conventional war. The conflict is slowly but unavoidably heating up as the game progresses and when it reaches a critical level then the ultimate weapons of mass destruction are unleashed. Let the countdown to extinction begin!
With a large number of game modes for multiplayer, DefCon offers many hours of non-repetitive gameplay.
Stylized graphics inspired by movies such as Wargames and Dr. Strangelove invoke a very engrossing atmosphere.
Easy to learn, hard to master mechanics that you can use to execute countless strategies.
Note: This game may require additional serial key for multiplayer mode. In case it is not automatically generated in your GOG.com library (open it via website → select the game → More → Serial Keys), please reach out to our Support team.
It take 3 hours to play, and there's no provision to save a gave in progress- thus I never play it, even though it's an otherwise good game. I'd probably play it a lot if I could do it 20 minutes to an hour at a time
When I went to play Defcon, I was hopping that it would be about carefully preselecting your targets for your warheads, your priories for your subs and and your bombers, so that when 0 finally hits, you can only watch and hope for the best laid plans to succeed. Nope. Instead, you get a micro heavy RTS, with every single click you make having drastic consequences. If that is for you, more power to you, fast paced micromanagement is not my cup of tea.
Fun game to play especially on my laptop when I'm away from my PC. Wish there was an actual pause screen so that I could get up and use the bathroom. Then again the nukes don't wait for you to use the bathroom. I see many more hours playing on roadtrips. Some of the controlls cold be better. When ever a building is selected, you have to left click that sme building again not just any blank spot on the screen or you will deply units or missiles there.
Your objective is to kill off as much of the enemy's civilian population as you can using a combination of missile silos, bombers and submarines all of which carry nuclear warheads with delivery systems of varying power.
You have to think carefully before you create your bases and silos based on your territory and decide on fleet strengths and their locations. As the game progresses you get to see every little step you took get magnified. Every decision matters and there are many different ways of playing.
The graphics are simple and distinctive and the music provides a great background. I've been playing for about 4 days now and its a little tricky when you start but once you get the hang of it you really appreciate the different strategies you can use. Multiplayer is fun with alliances forming and crumbling, a bit of backstabbing goes on but that's just another thing you have to factor in while deciding what to do when playing. If you like strategy games and don't mind putting in a few hours to learn then don't hesitate. Buy this game.
The annoying DRM aside, this game has horribly clunky controls. I can forgive slow-paced RTS, but this is too slow and the controls are hard to get the hang of and even then are a pain to handle.
I might even have been able to ignore all of that had it not been for the dead multiplayer: the single player is mediocre at best, and the multiplayer is empty.
If you don't mind bad controls and if you have friends with the game, then it is tolerable, even fun in the later phases, but otherwise avoid this.
