"Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god." - Jean Rostand Thoughts of a Biologist
You play the role of a military commander hidden deep within an underground bunker. Your mission - to successfully exterminate your enemy's civilian population whilst disabling their ability to attack your own. Start by launching your battleships, submarines, and bombers in order to decimate your opponent's defences. Scramble together your alliances, but remember only one can stand victorious. Prepare your pre-emptive strike before one of your supposed allies get the same idea. Choose the perfect moment for betrayal, obliterating your opponents with an apocalyptic thermonuclear barrage, but get it wrong and their devastating counter attack will bring you to your knees!
DEFCON is a hell of a ride for a strategy games fan. What can be more thrilling that a world-wide, thermonuclear conflict that wipes out all of humanity from the face of the Earth? You start slowly, deploying your forces on international waters, sneaking under the radar. Then, as the DEFCON level changes, players are allowed to use aggressive tactics and even start a conventional war. The conflict is slowly but unavoidably heating up as the game progresses and when it reaches a critical level then the ultimate weapons of mass destruction are unleashed. Let the countdown to extinction begin!
With a large number of game modes for multiplayer, DefCon offers many hours of non-repetitive gameplay.
Stylized graphics inspired by movies such as Wargames and Dr. Strangelove invoke a very engrossing atmosphere.
Easy to learn, hard to master mechanics that you can use to execute countless strategies.
Note: This game may require additional serial key for multiplayer mode. In case it is not automatically generated in your GOG.com library (open it via website → select the game → More → Serial Keys), please reach out to our Support team.
DEFCON this game for me had a creepy connection the same time my copy got in from Intoversion directly the TV show Jericho aired in almost a creepy ironic twist...
now onto the game itself.
It is probably one of the most tense games you will play especially with other people, Alliances will be formed, broken and blasted to slag, do not play this game if you are paranoid.
Get this game, you wont regret it.
I just get errors that it can't authenticate. I have no idea what that affects, but it seems like some online-DRM issue (which I thought wasn't allowed in GOG games?) I had bought all of Introversion's games, so this is disappointing.
Just finished running through the tutorial and a couple of one-v-one games against the computer and all I can say is this game is incredibly addictive. Despite the apparent lack of variety in units, each game is unique and challenging. With every match the AI's tactics change forcing you to reconsider your previous approach, eventually abandoning it as your entire west coast is blown from the face of the map, leading to some very immersive battles.
The game is impressive visually as well, the old school 'wargames' style interface is a smart choice - sacrificing impressive graphical capabilities for this stylish wireframe map has paid off dividends. A neat soundtrack also accompanies the retro-visuals. A tension building crescendo of sirens and drums really adds another dimension as the music ramps up from Defcon 5-1.
The games only weakness is paradoxically one of its core strengths. The simplicity of its design allows you to throw yourself into the game almost immediately and like a game of chess, using the set number of pieces on your board in unique ways every game is very rewarding. However, this lack of variety among the units and buildings will eventually cause the game to become a little stale - perhaps a DLC or mod could change this?
Either way, for now Defcon remains entertaining, challenging and and an absolute steal for the price.
The threat of mutually assured destruction has failed and you are ordered to fight a war that no one can win.
I have played many games over the years, have bloodily butchered my way through countless hordes of enemies... but DEFCON has them all beat in cold brutality.
If you "win" you can congratulate yourself on a well-executed genocide. Awesome. =)
I had a blast when I first experienced this game. The graphics (like in the movie 'War Games') was nice to look at.
The sound was also nice. But the game lacks any strategical and tactical depth.
As all other Introversion games this game is style over substance.
I hope Introversion will one day make a good game with their talent.
